EXCLUSIVE: Two years after baffling audiences with his abrupt cut-to-black ending for HBO’s The Sopranos, David Chase is back — this time, with a feature film. Unfortunately, it’s not about the Mafia. But the subject matter could be just as compelling. I’ve learned that Chase has firmed a late summer/early fall start date for his feature directing debut of an untitled script he wrote himself. I hear the drama is a music-driven coming-of-age saga for Paramount about a bunch of guys who form a rock band in the 1960s. Chase will produce with Mark Johnson.
UTA-repped Chase signed to make a movie at Paramount back in 2008, reuniting with Paramount Pictures chairman and fellow Sopranos exec producer Brad Grey. At the time, the studio would not reveal what Chase had in mind to make. It was a big surprise. Chase’s film will be released using the label Paramount Vantage, whose name the studio retained when it shuttered the boutique as a full-service specialty division, to reflect that this project is closer to the indie spirit and budget of past Vantage fare like Babel and There Will Be Blood than to Paramount’s big ticket pictures.
Will the Vantage move lessen expectations for Chase’s first project since retiring one of the most revered series in TV history? My feeling? Fuggedaboudit.
I know what you’re thinking: will Chase ever bring back Tony Soprano in a feature film? I asked around. While a Sopranos movie might not be as dead as Jimmy Hoffa, it is nowhere right now. This Paramount Vantage film is first priority for Chase. And, after he’s writing, producing and directing episodes of A Ribbon of Dreams, the HBO miniseries about the formative days of Hollywood. But we can still hope.

David Chase is an amazing talent, but how much more boomer nostalgia can we collectively take? I know every studio chief had a full head of hair back in the 60′s but aside from relieving their youth, what is another fictionalized glimpse of the sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll era going to add to the cinematic canon? Can we move on to dredging up the corpses of 70′s prog rock yet or does the withered music industry need to release another film soundtrack with the same 10 Rolling Stones songs Martin Scorsese uses in every one of his movies?
The first and best thing about David Chase is that he has nothing to prove to anyone.
*Salute*
Always.

A Ribbon of Dreams, a drama about the formative years of Hollywood? Exciting! One more drama about the music of the 60s? Please spare us… Baby boomers have been hitting us over the head with the same story about “that turbulent decade” for far too long. There are so many stories (before and since) to be told.
I would give Chase a little more credit than that. People say “The Sopranos” were one big boomer nostalgia trip, and that’s really reductive. Chase is a great artist. Trust the artist to make something great.
Probably the project based on the book: Me, the Mob, and the Music: One Helluva Ride with Tommy James & The Shondells
Author was on Stern today. Sounds like a great story.
Chase was a drummer in several rock bands in the 60′s and early 70′s (none of them famous) before he turned to writing. Could be interesting.
Congratulations, David!
It would be nice if they brought back the Vantage label for good. At this point the studios have no outlet for smaller films, which is crippling. No need for two distribution systems, just two business models.
So where are we with a ribbon of dreams ? Still haven’t even read a script and it was announced more than a year ago…
heard a rumor about a Sopranos prequel – about Tony and his crew coming up as young men in the 1980s. PLEASE GIVE US ANYTHING SOPRANOS.
I’d be curious to hear where you heard these ” rumours ” of a prequel. I have heard nothing of any merit relating to this. Unless you hear something from Chase himself you can, as they say, ” fughedddaabaaaditt!
I’m so happy to hear this! It will be fun to see what Chase does with a feature!
Cop Rock comes to mind.
Kinda sounds like “That Thing You Do”
“I hear the drama is a music-driven coming-of-age saga for Paramount about a bunch of guys who form a rock band in the 1960s.”
So…he’s filming “That Thing You Do”?
Excuse me, Mike….it CUT TO BLACK at the end…it did not fade. Did you work for the Oscar Production team last night or something….Oh and for what its worth – I can’t wait to see Tony Soprano rocking out…YEAH!
Most revered indeed! Once in a GREAT while something comes along that carries its own unique voice, one which will never be replicated. Such is The Sopranos. I will never forget this groundbreaking, bone breaking, mind expanding and mind bending saga. In an age when novels have lost their mass appeal and films paint on a limited canvas of 90 minutes, The Sopranos is a masterpiece of American culture. The New York Times rightly describes it ‘the most important piece of American popular culture the last quarter century,’ and notable for your readers, Nikki, is its commercial success as well – the most financially successful cable series of all time and at one time, worth $1 billion a year to HBO – a juggernaut even by Avatar’s box office standards.
The many admirers of David Chase are eagerly awaiting this project. This is right up Chase’s alley – musicians LOVE The Sopranos because so much of the show is about the attitudes of rock and roll, beginning with Stevie Van Zant’s involvement (as the extraordinary character Silvio Dante) down to the effective use of an eclectic ray of music throughout. Music is another main character. Chase is an accomplished Writer, Producer, Showrunner AND Director too, so we are right to have high expectations.
Please keep following this project Nikki.
Glad to heard of this
Congratulations, David!
yAAAWWWWnnnn…
Brian T nailed it…it does sound like Tommy James’ autobiography. If he did collaborate with Tommy’s book, the mafia would certainly be a big part of it, with at least a few characters from The Sopranos being heavily involved with Tommy James and his music.
Love it! Can’t wait.
Great! I’ve been waiting for a Freddie & The Dreamers biopic for years…
…so David Chase is doing the Jersey Boys movie?
Bonny, god you are funny. you should consider turning professional.
Commendatori!
I’m trusting Chase on this. I’m a boomer and I’M sick of my generation! But The Sopranos was so wonderful – as was the music in it – that I’m trusting anything Chase touches will be good.
