The war of words between Cablevision and Disney/ABC over whether WABC-TV will broadcast past 12:01 AM Sunday or force viewers to miss the Academy Awards heated up today. Now, usually, these retrans impasses solve themselves at the 11th hour. But the clock is ticking down, people:
BETHPAGE, NY, March 5, 2010 – Cablevision Systems Corporation today continued to urge ABC Disney to listen to government officials and consumers and not pull the plug on WABC at midnight on Saturday, March 6, 2010 while the negotiations continue. Cablevision has announced that it will leave the WABC Channel position open and available and that the switch is in Disney President and CEO Bob Iger’s hands.
Charles Schueler, Cablevision’s executive vice president of communications, said:
“There is one man who is going to decide whether New York gets to see the Oscars, and that’s Disney President and CEO Bob Iger. Cablevision already pays Disney more than $200 million a year and now they are demanding $40 million more. We call on Bob Iger to stop holding his own viewers hostage, end his threats to pull the plug on ABC at midnight and instead work with us to reach a fair agreement. The switch is in Bob Iger’s hands.”
Cablevision customers should urge ABC Disney not to pull their programming by calling 1-877-NO-TV-TAX, visiting http://www.cablevision.com/abc or joining its Facebook group “Cablevision Viewers Say: No New Fees, ABC!”
Here’s the latest WABC-TV statement:
In response to Cablevision’s ongoing campaign to mislead their consumers rather than focusing on reaching a fair agreement with ABC7 for retransmission consent, Rebecca S. Campbell, president and general manager, WABC-TV, has released the following statement:
“It’s time for Cablevision to stop spinning this issue and get serious about doing right by their customers. The fact is that, over and over again, Cablevision picks fights with programmers, and it is Cablevision subscribers who suffer the loss. The inconvenient truth about Cablevision is that it pockets hundreds of millions of dollars in subscriber fees each year by carrying ABC7. Dropping our station would be the latest insult. Their customers should know they have choices: They can switch service now and take their business to a provider that values them and isn’t threatening them with the loss of programming every few months, or get us free-over-the-air.”
ABC7 urges concerned Cablevision concerned viewers to customers tell Cablevision “Lose my Shows, Lose my Business” by calling 1-877-990-ABC7 or visiting http://www.saveABC7.com.
Cablevision claims they want to resolve this issue and not subject their customers to the loss of ABC7. However all of their offers have been designed to be rejected. For two years WABC has been working in good faith to try and reach an agreement that acknowledges the station’s value financially and as a key resource to the community. This is value Cablevision already charges their customers up to $18 each month for access to. It is value they further recognize in their own channels such as Sundance, for which they charge other cable and satellite operators to carry. It is patently unfair and unsustainable for Cablevision to pay fees to less popular channels and to pay fees to its own channels, while refusing to pay reasonable value to the most watched and most community-involved channel in New York.

…What’s all the fuss?? … Let ABC drop Cablevision. You’d be surprised how soon we wouldn’t even miss it. Also, the market will work it all out in time.
Well, the most fair way to solve this that I see is that Cablevision shouldn’t give WABC anything and then reduce its fees by the $18 WABC claims it charges for retransmission. That is fair and equitable to all, especially consumers.
But somehow I suspect that Cablevision will cave to WABC demands then jack up the fee even more.
cablevision is run by a bunch of morons
ABC is right — Cablevision has a history of screwing their customers in these hardball negotiation wars. Look at their history versus pretty much any other cable providers. Their cable system is a cash cow so they hardly can claim poverty.
A pox on both their houses, but twice as bad on Cablevision…I can’t stand the Dolans. What they’ve done to MSG (the building), the Knicks and Rangers should be enough to send them to the electric chair. They’ve had carrier issues with MSG Network, YES Network, NFL Network, Fios, HGTV, Food Network, etc…and ran the chain “The Wiz” into the ground, so my guess is that they’re the worst of two villains.
NIkki, you’d think this one would get settled by the 11th hour. That’s alot of viewers (ratings) that ABC/the Academy could lose.
I am paying for this fight to be played out on MY tv?!? Carefull cablevision….I can get it all for free on my computer…why do I pay you $200 a month? I think the family will have a talk today about saving over $2000 a year on programming we can watch when we want at the click of a mouse. Programming on demand is going to kill the monthly subscriptions for cable. Power to the people!
Hang tough Cablevision!
The whole reson cable companies began in the first place is to bring over the air broadcast signals to homes that wouldn’t otherwise be able to get them. Cablevision subscribers add millions of eyes and ratings points to WABC that they wouldn’t have off antenna. Now they want cable companies to pay for that! I can see paying for a cable-only network, but millions to provide what others get for free? Is ABC going to charge off-antenna viewers for the privlege of watching their crap? Fuck ‘em! Pull the plug and put on the Hartford affiliate in its place.
I grew up in NY metro, why not just unplug from the cable and watch it over the air? The signal should be fine. Some subscribers might need a hardware upgrade but not a significant portion of the audience.
I wouldn’t give ABC the satisfaction … this holding big events ransom tactic has got to be stopped in its tracks.
I imagine this will either get settled at the last minute or both sides will agree to an extension under the current retrans terms.
I don’t get all hot and bothered by these negotiations; it’s the ground rules the FCC set up for retrans/must carry that leads to this sort of thing. Clearly a two-tier system for broadcast TV is being established between the Big 4 network affiliates that have the programming leverage and get retrans and the CW/MyTV/indie stations that have to settle for must carry. Eventually the weaker stations will be forced off the air as they can no longer compete with cable and the stronger broadcast stations.
ABC Come on, don’t be so greedy, Oscars on on tonight…………….
Can’t this wait?????????????
Normally the problem is with Cablevision and their greed, but in this case I say dump ABC. Let them explain to their advertisers why they’ve simply chosen to stop advertising to 3.1 million households. ABC has ended up being the worst of the five networks in the Metro area for years. FOX, UPN and PBS have better programming than ABC. ABC buys one major event this year, the Academy Awards and expects Cablevision to pay $40 million to show it. While they’re at it why not cut the Disney Channel? ABC seems to think it controls all the cards. If they want more money, they need to provide more content. ABC’s programming is terrible. We really don’t need them if they’re going to keep showing the second rate fare that they do.
Both companies are disgusting. How f–ng gross that they would subject viewers and/or paying customers to their B.S. press releases. Do any of us really give a sh-t about which company makes more money off of us? I wish people would get smart and stop paying for ALL of this sh-t. Seriously. Think about it. What have BOTH companies told us? “Our problems are more important than yours.” “we’re more important than you.” This is what our society has come to? We’re actually expected to take a side and invest 3 minutes of our lives to call an 877 number? To “help” two gigantic rich companies fight it out? They should be f–ng calling 877 numbers on OUR behalf. It’s DISGUSTING. Earthquakes in Haiti, Chile, starving oppressed people in every corner of the world, and THIS is what we’re worried about? The CEOs of BOTH companies should go to hell.
