Magnet Releasing picked up U.S. distribution rights to Monsters, in a deal made hours after the film debuted at a midnight screening at SXSW. Magnet is the genre arm of Todd Wagner and Mark Cuban’s Magnolia Pictures. The Gareth Edwards-directed thriller concerns a road taken by a journalist and an American tourist through Mexico, an area quarantined after a NASA probe containing alien life forms crashed there and sprouted creatures. Magnet acquired distribution rights in Canada and Mexico as well.

Hot Trailer: ‘Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter’

I’ve heard a few good things about this film. I’m eager to see how it does.
I attended the SXSW premiere, and it played great with the audience. Really impressive piece of work from first-time director Gareth Edwards (a gifted VFX guy), anchored by a pair of strong performances by the two (relatively unknown) leads, Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able. Not as much action as Cloverfield or District 9, but it should definitely appeal to fans of those films. Really smart pick-up by Magnet/Magnolia, who moved fast before anyone else could snatch it (others were definitely circling, and should be kicking themselves). If you’re in Austin, it screened again tomorrow (Thursday) at midnight.
