EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures is remaking the 1987 film The Monster Squad. Rob Cohen, who produced the original, hopes to direct the remake. Cohen will produce with Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form, and they’re meeting with writers.
A group of kids who worship the classic monsters suddenly discover that Dracula is in town, and he’s got his pals Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, The Gill Man and The Mummy with him. The kids must stop their efforts to find an amulet that will give the creatures control of the world. Sounds a bit cheesy, but the film is beloved by fanboys.
The script was written by Fred Dekker and Shane Black before Lethal Weapon made the latter Hollywood’s highest paid writer of the 1990s. Cohen was one of the producers on that film and many others before he transitioned to the director’s chair. The film is at Paramount after Platinum Dunes moved there last fall. David Ladd will be a producer on the film.

They already did that. It was called Van Helsing. And it was terrible.
Totally unnecessary. Just re-release the original in 3-D! “The Wolfman has nards?” Nothing in this remake will beat that line.
Sad…do kids even know what “nards” are these days? After all, its the only good line in that piece o’ crap.
this movie was classic your one of those people who thought episode 1 was a great movie arent you
Really piece of crap? you should really think about that again. I beg to differ big time. It’s still a huge success and many people went to the ALAMO recently within the last 2 years when they finally decided to release it on DVD because it’s been 20 years and to see and meet the cast.
How many remakes do these guys have to totally screw up before folks don’t give them any more remake rights? With every frame of footage people see of the “Nightmare on Elm Street” remake, that’s another chunk of the potential audience that decides not to see it, massive reshoots or not. They got lucky with the “Texas Chainsaw” remake, but the sequel, “The Hitcher,” “Friday the 13th,” “Nightmare,” etc. = unwatchable garbage. Thank goodness “The Birds” remake fell apart before Platinum Dunes could continue their “Van Helsing”-esque campaign of “who-cares-as-long-as-it-gets-greenlit-and-Bay-gets-his-first-dollar-points?” swath of destruction through horror.
I have to disagree here. The new Nightmare holds promise, and at least it was directed by someone who knows how to use the Camera well.
I agree. The nightmare remake was more than just a remake, it was a re-imagining on some parts too. When they never really elaborate on how Freddy had access to the kids in the original, other than living in the neighborhood, but the remake story line of Freddy’s murder actually made more sense. Just Saying
Except the nightmare on elm street for example, had a different director.. i think if they keep the director the same, the quality of movie should stay the same as he has some heart and soul into the franchise
That was a cool flick. I hope they don’t mess it up.
This is one of those instances where this can be redone very well. Just keep it simple!
At the risk of sounding like a fangirl, I cry out…dear god WHY?! Dekker’s original was adorable and cherished by so many. That and his NIGHT OF THE CREEPS only just made it on to DVD as well, so why won’t Hollywood give us a little time to enjoy them, before destroying our childhood memories. Alas.
That’s absolutely craptaculare! (or is it craptastic?).
I don’t know weather to be really stoked or really pissed….
And Platinum Dunes’ rape of our childhood continues unabated.
But maybe it will make a lot of money so Paramount will lay more people off.
this is old news. They announced the remake a couple years ago.
And yet the headline is “back in action,” so clearly not “old news,” whiner.
The remake was announced a long time ago. This isn’t an announcement, had you read the actual article (are you capable of reading it?). It’s speaking of how the once-dead remake is back.
So Universal struck out twice trying to get new franchises off the ground for their classic monsters-Van Helsing and The Wolfman. Instead of doing those stories right, they’re gonna throw a bunch of monsters together and hope a watchable product is the result.
Oh, joy.
The headline excited me until I read a little further down and saw Rob Cohen’s name attached. Van Helsing 2 just came to mind.
“Cohen will produce with Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, ”
For a movie that’s like getting shot and stabbed simultaneously.
In the groin.
You mean in the nards.
Why didn’t this go to Sony? Oh yeah right THEY HAVE NO MORE DEVELOPMENT MONEY…
It was at Sony and they let it go.
Poor, poor Hollywood. Lots of talented writers out there with ORIGINAL and, dare I say it, ENTERTAINING non-political agenda- type work, yet who needs THAT sort of mischief if we can just remake or reboot stuff from the past. Lament, I missed the boat by about two decades. My guild card is shriveling as I type this. And oh!–I put words in CAPS in this posting. Shame on me. Someone take away my rickety old Final Draft software before I do something dangerous and (shhhhh!) original. ‘Scuse my harsh language with the “o” word.
If this is shot in anamorphic 3d I’ll see it 5 times. Doubt it though but am looking forward to it!
The real drag is, just like the 80′s version of Monster Squad(which I enjoyed) this is being done by Paramount, NOT Universal, even though the monsters are ALL Universal classic characters……this means the make-ups and creature design has to be new and “original” and can’t look like the REAL monsters should. …..It will probably suck, What a shame……
Good LORD.
Are there ANY WRITERS WORKING ON ORIGINAL SCRIPTS OUT THERE? Or is it just that the studios are refusing to do anything original?
Seriously – STOP RE-MAKING MOVIES THAT CAME OUT 20-ODD YEARS AGO.
MEMO TO HOLLYWOOD: MY GENERATION WANTS ORIGINAL MATERIAL – NOT BAD RE-MAKES OF THE MOVIES WE GREW UP ON.
Cool. Isn’t that the movie that Ryan Lambert and Adam Carl were in?
I think Ryan was “Rudy”. Not sure who Adam played, but I know he did a short film called “Jew-assic Park”….It was up on you tube a few years ago. LMAO!! It was Funny!!!
OMG! I had crushes on both Ryan and Adam! Perfect foils for each other. If rolled into one, would be the perfect guy! ROFLMAO. Those guys should have a show. That’s one I would watch.
How does this piece of garbage have a cult following? I remember when it came out it was some shameless wannabe Goonies.
Thank you, I’m glad someone here has some taste and sense. The Monster Squad is one of the worst movies of the 80s and anyone could improve on it. I’m actually looking forward to seeing this remake.
Yep, Ryan Lambert. And Duncan Regehr as Dracula and Tom Noonan as Frankenstein.
I recongized at the time I was watching it at age 14 it was a silly movie that was kinda fun. I can’t imagine it’s aged well.
You could make the argument in 1987 that kids no longer knew about the “Famous Monsters” i.e. Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, etc. In 2010 they are — as much as I loved them growing up from my youth — even more irrelevant.
I can’t see this project working. The original was a massive box-office bomb and I fear they’d replace Dracula and Co. with the likes of Jigsaw and Hannibal Lector.
But wait… there will be robots. And Megan Fox.
another painful piece of platinum dunes poo
is there no end to the lack of innovation, creativity and originality in the business these days?
