EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures is remaking the 1987 film The Monster Squad. Rob Cohen, who produced the original, hopes to direct the remake. Cohen will produce with Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form, and they’re meeting with writers.
A group of kids who worship the classic monsters suddenly discover that Dracula is in town, and he’s got his pals Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, The Gill Man and The Mummy with him. The kids must stop their efforts to find an amulet that will give the creatures control of the world. Sounds a bit cheesy, but the film is beloved by fanboys.
The script was written by Fred Dekker and Shane Black before Lethal Weapon made the latter Hollywood's highest paid writer of the 1990s. Cohen was one of the producers on that film and many others before he transitioned to the director's chair. The film is at Paramount after Platinum Dunes moved there last fall. David Ladd will be a producer on the film.
They already did that. It was called Van Helsing. And it was terrible.
Totally unnecessary. Just re-release the original in 3-D! “The Wolfman has nards?” Nothing in this remake will beat that line.
Sad…do kids even know what “nards” are these days? After all, its the only good line in that piece o’ crap.
How many remakes do these guys have to totally screw up before folks don’t give them any more remake rights? With every frame of footage people see of the “Nightmare on Elm Street” remake, that’s another chunk of the potential audience that decides not to see it, massive reshoots or not. They got lucky with the “Texas Chainsaw” remake, but the sequel, “The Hitcher,” “Friday the 13th,” “Nightmare,” etc. = unwatchable garbage. Thank goodness “The Birds” remake fell apart before Platinum Dunes could continue their “Van Helsing”-esque campaign of “who-cares-as-long-as-it-gets-greenlit-and-Bay-gets-his-first-dollar-points?” swath of destruction through horror.
I have to disagree here. The new Nightmare holds promise, and at least it was directed by someone who knows how to use the Camera well.
That was a cool flick. I hope they don’t mess it up.
This is one of those instances where this can be redone very well. Just keep it simple!
At the risk of sounding like a fangirl, I cry out…dear god WHY?! Dekker’s original was adorable and cherished by so many. That and his NIGHT OF THE CREEPS only just made it on to DVD as well, so why won’t Hollywood give us a little time to enjoy them, before destroying our childhood memories. Alas.
That’s absolutely craptaculare! (or is it craptastic?).
I don’t know weather to be really stoked or really pissed….
And Platinum Dunes’ rape of our childhood continues unabated.
But maybe it will make a lot of money so Paramount will lay more people off.
this is old news. They announced the remake a couple years ago.
And yet the headline is “back in action,” so clearly not “old news,” whiner.
The remake was announced a long time ago. This isn’t an announcement, had you read the actual article (are you capable of reading it?). It’s speaking of how the once-dead remake is back.
So Universal struck out twice trying to get new franchises off the ground for their classic monsters-Van Helsing and The Wolfman. Instead of doing those stories right, they’re gonna throw a bunch of monsters together and hope a watchable product is the result.
Oh, joy.
The headline excited me until I read a little further down and saw Rob Cohen’s name attached. Van Helsing 2 just came to mind.
“Cohen will produce with Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, ”
For a movie that’s like getting shot and stabbed simultaneously.
In the groin.
You mean in the nards.
Why didn’t this go to Sony? Oh yeah right THEY HAVE NO MORE DEVELOPMENT MONEY…
It was at Sony and they let it go.
Poor, poor Hollywood. Lots of talented writers out there with ORIGINAL and, dare I say it, ENTERTAINING non-political agenda- type work, yet who needs THAT sort of mischief if we can just remake or reboot stuff from the past. Lament, I missed the boat by about two decades. My guild card is shriveling as I type this. And oh!–I put words in CAPS in this posting. Shame on me. Someone take away my rickety old Final Draft software before I do something dangerous and (shhhhh!) original. ‘Scuse my harsh language with the “o” word.
If this is shot in anamorphic 3d I’ll see it 5 times. Doubt it though but am looking forward to it!
The real drag is, just like the 80’s version of Monster Squad(which I enjoyed) this is being done by Paramount, NOT Universal, even though the monsters are ALL Universal classic characters……this means the make-ups and creature design has to be new and “original” and can’t look like the REAL monsters should. …..It will probably suck, What a shame……
Good LORD.
Are there ANY WRITERS WORKING ON ORIGINAL SCRIPTS OUT THERE? Or is it just that the studios are refusing to do anything original?
Seriously – STOP RE-MAKING MOVIES THAT CAME OUT 20-ODD YEARS AGO.
MEMO TO HOLLYWOOD: MY GENERATION WANTS ORIGINAL MATERIAL – NOT BAD RE-MAKES OF THE MOVIES WE GREW UP ON.
Cool. Isn’t that the movie that Ryan Lambert and Adam Carl were in?
I think Ryan was “Rudy”. Not sure who Adam played, but I know he did a short film called “Jew-assic Park”….It was up on you tube a few years ago. LMAO!! It was Funny!!!
How does this piece of garbage have a cult following? I remember when it came out it was some shameless wannabe Goonies.
Thank you, I’m glad someone here has some taste and sense. The Monster Squad is one of the worst movies of the 80s and anyone could improve on it. I’m actually looking forward to seeing this remake.
Yep, Ryan Lambert. And Duncan Regehr as Dracula and Tom Noonan as Frankenstein.
I recongized at the time I was watching it at age 14 it was a silly movie that was kinda fun. I can’t imagine it’s aged well.
You could make the argument in 1987 that kids no longer knew about the “Famous Monsters” i.e. Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, etc. In 2010 they are — as much as I loved them growing up from my youth — even more irrelevant.
I can’t see this project working. The original was a massive box-office bomb and I fear they’d replace Dracula and Co. with the likes of Jigsaw and Hannibal Lector.
But wait… there will be robots. And Megan Fox.
another painful piece of platinum dunes poo
is there no end to the lack of innovation, creativity and originality in the business these days?
Hey, better they should remake ’80s films than desecrate genuine classics from the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s. (Ashton Kutcher and Jessica Simpson in CASABLANCA, anyone?)
You know what else isn’t original….. crying about bullshit on a message board like your opinion matters
Wow what a critical people out there……
I little positivity?? The movie is a remake….yes
you like compare the 80 with now??? We are
in 3d now….they can make this movie amazing!!!!
Just be positive we need good movies
old or new…… In the end they try!!!!
You could remake MONSTER SQUAD a hundred times and always get a great movie, but why not just rerelease it? It’s about as close to a perfect movie as you can get.
Another needless remake. This dosen’t just sadden me because I enjoyed the original, but because like the kids in that film, I am very much a fan of classic movie monsters. Will someone please treat them with some respect and intelligence? So many classic movies and Hollywood just keeps showing how utterly ungrateful they are of heritage. Tragic.
Its all about take and tone. Who would have thought “Where the Wild Things Are” wouldve have turned out the way it did…Lets wait to see who the writer is before we cast to much doubt.
So whatever happened to Rob Cohen’s biography of Russ Meyer?
Why? There really is nothing else to say / ask.
Bring back Andre Gower!
Jonah Hill needs to play Horace the fat kid in the remake…clearly his shot to break out into more serious roles…
“Hey fat kid…good job.”
(shotgun in hand)
“My name…”
(pumps shotgun)
“Is Horace.”
Any thoughts on who should play Scary German Guy???
The same Rob Cohen who brought us the amazing MUMMY movies?? hahahahahahahaha uhmmmmmmm yeah…..nuff said.
Could this be worse than making The A-Team into a movie with Joe Carna”ham” directing? Prolly not but damn close.
To all those who are bitching and moaning about how a remake of Monster Squad is “raping my childhood,” or “ruining childhood memories,” quit your whinging!
You’ve still got the original to keep you warm and any remake is not going to travel back in time and rape your precious childhood self.
Even seeing the remake won’t destroy those good memories – they’ll still be there. Quit the hyperbolic BS – just don’t see the remake.
Geez! What a bunch of crybabies! What are you, 5?
One more thing – Van Helsing is not a remake of Monster Squad. It is nothing like Monster Squad. It lacks the warmth, wit and charm of Monster Squad – not to mention the intelligence and imagination.
Just sayin’…
No no no, it should be set in Old Tyme England…
“Evidently a Lycanthrope does possess bollocks”
Check out Ashley Bank (she played the little girl Phoebe in the original “Monster Squad” film) in a really fun web series @ ParanormalBurbank.com (you can also add them on Facebook)!!! There’s a lot of “Monster Squad” references in Episodes 4 and 7!!
MSR
first off, kudos to Matt for making me laugh harder than I have in weeks! Second, I accompanied Kirk Cameron to the “Monster Squad” premiere back in the day (how’s that for an 80’s overload flashback!) Thought the movie really kinda sucked, great premise, not a great movie. I LOVE the classic Universal monsters, would love to see them get together again in something worthy. “M.S.” is still a great premise so…??? I’m guessing with the Platinum Dunes abysmal track record it will still kinda suck or maybe it will REALLY suck! P.S.-Highlight of the premiere evening was at the after party at Hard Rock Cafe at the Beverly Center, Arnold Schwarzenegger chomping on a big cigar called Kirk and I over to his booth and strongly chewed out Cameron for never getting back to him about appearing at a Special Olympics event Arnie wanted him to appear at. A shaken pre-Jesus lovin’ Kirk just kept saying, no one ever even told me about it. It was better than the movie!!!
One of my fav movies of all time! I can’t even get a copy of the film on DVD in the uk! I really hope the remake doesn’t over shawdow the original! It’s a classic and shouldn’t be done! It wud be like making the goonies again! It just won’t have the same affect
I was stoked to find the DVD release today as this was one of my favorite movies as a kid….I just finished watching it with my son and guess what…it was just as good as I remembered and he loved it as much as I did!! If they are going to do a remake they better make it as family friendly as the original and not screw it up. And by family friendly I mean not full of sexual references and innuendo as so many “family” movies are these days…I’m getting tired of answering questions that I shouldn’t have to answer for a few more years after I watch a so called family movies…some of us parents actually don’t mind if the content is strictly for the younguns..
I think that making the Monster squad is a wonderous thing. I’m currently watching the old one and it came to me as to why they don’t remake it. I thinkt that should add new monsters. The graphics are going to be wicked. But also could you imagine if it wasn’t made for children. It would be mad awesome!
