Stephenie Meyer announced that she has written the Twilight tie-in novella The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novel. Little,Brown will release the book June 5, pledging $1 from each copy to be donated to the Red Cross for disaster relief in Haiti and Chile. But fans will want to know if this means another Meyer movie, and it doesn’t seem likely at this point. In her disclosure about the 192-page novella—about the young vampire Bree who’s introduced in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse—Meyer reveals that the prose helped Eclipse director David Slade and his castmembers as a research tool but it isn’t clear whether it will stand on its own as a film. Because Summit Entertainment financed the Twilight films—the last book, Breaking Dawn, will be split into two installments—the indie company would likely own the character rights and there will undoubtedly be some begging by a distributor eager to keep the franchise alive.
I can report some forward progress on the movie version of The Host, Meyer’s first adult novel which she optioned last fall to producers Nick Wechsler and Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz–the trio behind the terrific screen adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. Steve Schwartz tells me that Andrew Niccol is working on the third draft of a screenplay which he’s writing in close consultation with the author. The Australian-born Niccol was once the hottest screenwriter in town after his groundbreaking script The Truman Show, and he has followed by writing visionary films like Gattaca and most The City That Sailed—the latter is a project that Will Smith has been attached to for more than a year. Still, Niccol wouldn’t qualify as the hottest director in town and would normally get overlooked for such a plum project. He originally wrote The City That Sailed as a directing vehicle. But Smith, who’d play a New York-based father with a London-based daughter who misses him so much that it causes her seaside town to break away and float toward Gotham, brought on his I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence, until the filmmaker jumped to direct Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz in Water for Elephants for Fox 2000. Fox is now looking for another filmmaker.
Because the producers used their own money, they were not hostage to choosing the flavor of the moment, but rather the right guy. Schwartz said the search went like this: “We asked Stephenie what her favorite science fiction movies were, and one of them was Gattaca,” he sald. “We spent time with Andrew, listened to his vision, introduced Andrew to Stephenie and she responded. There is very good chemistry in this group. Stephenie is a very smart collaborator, and she had an intuitive strong hunch he would be the right guy. Based on the script we’ve seen, we think she was right. We’re thinking this will be shot in early 2011.” They haven’t gone out for production financing—they might put together a cast first and come to the table with a complete package. But Meyer is a viable brand because of Twilight, and based on the incessant inquiries by distributors, Schwartz doesn’t think they will have trouble. “We are budgeting right now,” he said.
The Host is a love story set in the near future, when the Earth has been overrun by benevolent alien parasites that call themselves “souls” and take over the consciousness of humans. The book is about a “soul” called Wanderer, which fuses with a dying woman named Melanie Stryder, bent on discovering the whereabouts of the last pocket of surviving humans. Wanderer, a veteran assimilator, struggles with the dogged determination of the woman to retain her identity and values.

Andrew Niccol adapting and directing a Stephanie Meyer book? Whose genius idea was that? I guess there is a reason it is being developed ‘independently’.
The producers have moved from Cormac McCarthy to Stephanie Meyer? Talk about a step down.
You can say that again. Her writing is like Cliff Notes for people who don’t understand Dan Brown novels.
I actually liked the Host… The Twilight books were garbage but the Host wasn’t that bad.
Anyone that would call her “Twilight” books garbage…must not enjoy reading love stories. So why would anyone read “The Twilight Saga” books when it’s obvious it’s clearly based more around the love story then the sci-fi???
I liked all the Twilight Books and The Host. I just finished reading The Host and right after the last page I was hoping a movie would be done to bring the book into a better perspective for me. Stephanie Meyer is a great author and I wish her the best of luck with the movie version of The Host.
You should not comment on another author’s books, and writing skills because every author has its own style, and every author’s imagination is going to vary. And Dan Brown writes books for adults, and Stephenie Meyer writes Young Adult novels, so you do the math!
thank you jorge. Stephenie is a great author. Every author has a different style and its no one’s right to criticise them for what they do or who they are!!
That’s right! I hear people critisize up and down the wall aout how bad the Twilight books are but I say ‘ YOU WRITE SOMETHING!! WRITE SOMETHING AND HAVE IT BECOME A BEST SELLER AND BE TURNED TO MOVIES!!!!!” Not many people can do that. I love all of stephanie Meyers books and can’t wait for more. She got me back into reading again. Thanx stephanie
I really can’t see how you can say that. I’ve read all of Dan Brown’s books and while Meyer’s subjects are intended for younger audiences, Host was a considerable step up from the Twilight books in terms of maturity and years beyond Brown in terms of plot depth and character development. Don’t misunderstand me, I enjoy Brown and his books are page turners, for sure, but characters are thin, the plot is usually predictable. Brown’s styles is sometimes so stereotypical and predictable (as in Digital Fortress) that it’s almost tough to read.
Out of all the authors for comparison you choose Dan Brown? Really? I can respect differences in taste, but the fact that, out of all the writers, poets, and novelists this world has seen, you choose Dan Brown, shows that you have no considerable knowledge of literature thus no appreciation and you wouldn’t know art if I slapped you in the face with Macbeth.
That’s just mean. I think its a great idea, you have to be open to NEW things not just stick with the same. You must be a boring person.
Personallly, I loved the twilight saga. What really got me interested was Edwards love for Bella. And how far he would go to protect her. Then when I heard that Meyer wrote another book, The Host I had to read it. I loved the Host way more than Twiligt, I even cried! So I could care less who directs it or writes it as long as it’s better than the first Twilight movie haha. And, blogs are meant so people can say how they feel. There’s no need to argue everyone likes different things
Have you read the book! Its much better than twilight, much more adult. Don’t knock it till you’ve read it!
Have any of these people seen S1mone?
I can’t make up mind as to what was worse… S1mone or Lord of War… the latter being one of
Nic Cage’s most cringeworthy films.
Lord of War? Wha..? That’s actually one of the better movies he’s done in the last 10 years. Apparently, you’ve never seen Ghost Rider, or Bangkok Dangerous…
Lord of War is a good movie. Nic Cage plays it perfectly with a chronological detachment from everything – that’s what happens when you essentially sell your soul.
Oh, and another Meyer movie? Jesus, when will it end?
Another sure to be financial disaster…I mean hit…from the team of The Road. If this book is such a find why didn’t Marty buy it and Summit do it? OH right….every studio and financier passed on the book through multiple submissions
I loved THE HOST! Andrew Niccol is an interesting choice–I haven’t seen SIMONE, but GATTACA was a great film.
“Lord of War” is one of the best and the most realistic portrayle about arms dealing amongst the middle east and then insulting that film more by comparing it to Simone- talking about bad taste is what have Tod H. You have rotten taste in films!!
Many of you are laboring under the sickness that I like to call Chronic Stupidity. An epidemic that is sweeping the BOOK/MOVIE nation. The Host is an excellent book. I have never seen ANY of the movies that have been hitherto mentioned. I can only hope that nobody will RUIN this fantastic book. I find it a tremendous shame that the victims of CS continue to gush and blush over movies such as the Saw Series while turning their noses up at truly great stories, such as the Host.
If you want Chronic Stupidity, look no further than yourself.
Meyer is worse than Rowling, which means that my dog can pen a better novel.
But that’s really the whole problem. The majority of people are retarded, that’s why Twilight has sold so much and movies like Transformers and the afore-mentioned Twilight are called ‘blockbusters’ and not ‘war crimes’.
To everyone who has only bad things to say: when you can do better, influence as many people, and make as much money as these people, then you can come over with your snide comments and rude remarks. )Ou say your dog can do better- where is the book or film to prove it? Everyone’s a critic-but I don’t see you stepping up to the plate
I am with Jess B. Where are your novels? Where are your movies? Where are your millions? Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but come on people! Have you ever even tried to get something published? Grow a pair and put your work out there, and then you can publicly bash these authors.
Incidentally, I loved The Host, I think it is very smart of Meyers to milk Twilight for all it’s worth, and Rowling has done something children and child literacy rates that most teachers would sell their souls to be able to do.
Either you don’t know enough about modern fiction and the influence of modern authors or you feel that putting down “popular” fiction makes you look more refined. Your comment comes without a background on what you consider to qualify as good writing, which is a convenient corner to criticize other people’s work. Most authors that we consider now to be of the “classics” were once writing popular stories that were intended to be received by their generation, which is no different than Brown, Meyer, Kingsolver, King, Rowling, or Tolkien. And all of them have been successful, some more than others. Because their audience is young adults, or kids, doesn’t take away from their quality of writing and in some ways shows an ability to connect to a younger generation that so called “great” authors have had trouble with. Tolkien wrote about an entire world and history that showed some of the most complex and deep plot/character development of any story in history (ok, that’s arguable, but significant, still), and King found a lot of inspiration in him, as did Rowling. King has more praise for Rowling than most people know yet they write in completely different styles. If you take the time to read what these people have given us, you might see how valuable and talented they are. I agree that Twilight was somewhat sophomoric, but so was the audience (ha, pun, sort of). And the fact that Host showed so much more maturity in writing is saying a lot.
That was long… oops
I have read both the Twilight Saga and The Host and loved both of them. I do admit that I am more into reading Young Adult novels but while I was reading The Host at times I forgot that Stephenie Meyer was the author. The writing style was geared toward a more mature audience and I do believe she did a great job at capturing her audience. For people to sit here a critize a book or an author that they probably haven’t even bothered to read is very disappointing. As a book lover I will read anything that anybody recommends to me and then make my opinion. Like they say never judge a book by it’s cover.
You are an idiot. If you’d read Harry Potter, for one, you’d know that it was meant for children. It was first and foremost a children’s series.
I bet you haven’t even read Twilight or The Host either. The fact that Meyer has such a diversity is amazing. You, on the other hand, can barely write a decent comment.
And if your dog can ‘pen’ a better novel, why don’t you post his fantastic compositions? Let the rest of the world be the judge, because your view of ‘good’ is obviously more than a bit, well, screwy.
actually, the Harry Potter series was written for Rowlings kids, and as they became more mature, so did the books. so the series was especially well written due to the fact that the books were fit for numerous audiences and so successful
Thank you. The Host is my favorite novel. I can guarantee that most people, if not everyone, that is bashing it, has never read it.
I agree with Rebecca. How could anyone who has read The Host actually think anything bad about it? I waited a long time after it came out before I read it because the basic structure doesn’t sound like anything I would like. Bodysnatcher stories have never been to my taste. When I did start reading it, I couldn’t put it down. The Host is an excellent book and Stephanie Meyer is a very talented author.
Look, I’ve read the entire Twilight Saga AND The Host! YES, Meyer may not or should not ever be compared to someone like Danielle Steel or even Nathan Sparks or any other prestegious author. However, she has made me think as a person and as a mother. She really gives me something to ponder at night and something to look foward to. I’m a 22 yr wife and mom. I need my outlet to let my mind get off of my every day crap. So, anyone who has any more shit to say about any of Stephanie Meyer’s work needs to actually read her creations and stop comparing her to other people. She offers something different to think about AND inspires the regular jane or joe like myself to write a little something and see where it goes.
All I have to say is AMEN!! Stephenie is such a wonderful person! Her works are so different and wonderful and they do take you out of everyday life. You can get lost in a different worlds which I believe are what books are suppose to do. I’m team Stephenie!! =D
and people in the world wonder why hollywood makes such bad movies….indie producer with s–pid money.
oh no, this article isn’t a fluff piece by the filmmakers.
The Host was weird but a movie might spice it up a bit! But what I really want to know about is the Twilight book from Edwards point of veiw I really like where she was going with it so far. I hope she continues that. I also don’t understand why everyone knocks her. She had a great idea that people loved! No one is even suggesting she is the best author out there. All the people talking bad about her I dont see any of you out there with a book and you obviously read the book(s) so…ha. Anyway I really like that she started something that got kids AND adults reading again. Its amazing!
agreed, dominique. i manage a bookstore and the twilight series floated 2 years worth of paychecks. say what you will about mrs. meyer…this is a business and she generates money. big ups to her.
Everyone knocks Stephenie Meyer because she writes second rate Harlequin romance novels for teenage girls that make about as much sense as a retarded kitten running a Merry-Go-Round.
What EXACTLY do you not understand, and is it due to a mental flaw of your own?
What EXACTLY do you not understand, and is it due to a mental flaw of your own? I understand it without working hard to get there. I happen to be a teenage girl who enjoyed Meyer, but not obsessively like all those “Team Edward Team Jacob” airheads. I am a little dorky, and so enjoy classical work as well. Oliver Twist is one of my favorites, the unabridged book, not the movies. The first Twilight book wasn’t all that remarkable, but they get better. The characters are fantastic.
Really grow up. These books are amazing. Both the twilight series and the Host. I don’t see you writing best sellers and making millions. You should ba happy for her for what she has done. With this world and with the “retarted kitten teenager’s” inspration. You probably jealous that your book got rejected or you are a fat ugly man who can’t be romantic. Keep your comments to yourself. Being 17 I found your comment extremely offensive.
(I happened to be going to Harvard. What a retarted kitten teenager I am and used to be. Moron)
Sorry–Harry Potter did that. Meyer just put out some pandering trash that Little Brown marketed like no tomorrow.
Still, I’m somewhat interested in this project because Andrew Niccol is one of my favorites. I still haven’t read the Host (I refuse to touch anything she writes after Twilight) but I can easily see him improving it ten-fold.
I honestly believe you should consider trying the Host. Unlike many of the people I know, I MUCH preferred it over Twilight. Stephanie Meyer’s writing may not be wonderful, but her stories and creativity (trust me, the Host is much more creative than the vampires) really shine through and make the Host worth while. The first few chapters are hard to understand, but I believe anyone who sticks with it and loves a good story will enjoy this novel.
i also prefer Host over the Twilight Series. mostly becouse the vampire stories are a little repetitve.
I can understand who blame Stephenie to write “garbage” becouse she is new to this job and her writing aren’t always very impressive. but She can do something that not all writer can…she drag you in the middle of the story and you can feel all the emotion of the characters.
So i really love her books!
I hope that the movie don’t ruin the feeling I had reading the book like the twilight movie have done.
If you hate twilight, you MUST read the Host. it’s something else and more creative. maybe a little boring in some parts but you will love it in its total.
i’m sorry if i wrote something wrong. my english is hideous. i hope you can understand anyway.
yeah, im definitley NOT a fan of the twilight series… but the host is amazing. it is a very though-provoking book that explores mature themes very well.
I agree with Dominique! I wish Meyer would finish “Midnight Sun.” I read the manuscript so far and loved it. How often do we read a love story from a male’s perspective…It’s so brilliant, and I know Meyer has lost her desire to finish the script because of the leak and negative comments from critics, but as a fan…I want more. That may sound selfish, but Meyer got me hooked and I hope she will finish what she started one day…I hope she will stay true to her fans and not let critics get in the way of the beautiful work she creates.
Our introduction to SM was thru the Twilight Series the books and
the movies. These are not for adults perse. The books were
written for young adults. The movies will not go over the PG13 rating. I have not read the Host because I am not a true sci-fi
fan. I fell for the two main characters in the Twilight series.
Those two characters were what got me back for more after the
first book, and it is the same with the movies. Once their
story is finished, I will be too.
I think its absolutely ridiculous how everyone talks so badly about Stephenie Meyer, seriously get over it. If you dont like her writing, her ideas, her movies, or anything to do with her, than stop wasting your time reading articles about her and her work. Stop being a waste and learn to look at ALL FORMS OF ART with an open mind. I did not see the big deal about Twilight and the Saga and or movies until last year, I finally read one and was completely drawn in by the storyline. No, she is not the BEST writer in the world, but who is to judge that? She writes clearly, you picture what she pictures and its an easy read… that could put her in high scores in a lot of people’s eyes. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire Twilight Saga, including Midnight Sun and the chapters that were cut from the books. Furthermore, I do not like sci-fi type movies, books and or shows normally, and when I first started The Host I HATED it, but then I realized I hated it because I was looking at it with blinders on. I was reading and looking for another Twilight. When I started it again, I zipped through the book in like a week. A mom of 2 toddlers who is 8 months pregnant and works full time, I have limited time, but I did. I enjoyed it, and thought in a lot of aspects it was better than her ealier work. I really appreciate her imagination and cant wait for her to write more!!!!!!!! You go girl, let the haters hate, they obviously are miserable, misery loves company….
well said!!
I can’t wait
I loved this book
I agree with Crystie, Stephenie Meyer rocks and so do all her books! She is not only the most powerful woman in book publishing, but in Hollywood too! I suspect a lot of the haters are men…
Eh, she’s not writing literature, and I am no road scholar by any means. Quit knocking someone who loves what they do! People read way more into it than what it really is. ENTERTAINMENT! You don’t like it, well then STFU and move on!
I enjoyed The Host. Can’t wait for it to come out in film.
“Rhodes” scholar
So you know, Niccol was born in Paraparaumu, New Zealand and grew up in Auckland; he wasn’t born in Australia.
I am so happy he’s writing/directing. Gattaca is one of my favorite movies of all time, so if anyone can make this a good movie, I think it’s him.
The Host is a very interesting sci fi book. Its a mix of Dances With Wolves meets The Puppet Masters if that makes any sense. If you don’t like Meyer because of the vampire movies thats cool. If you are into sci fi then you owe it to yourself to check The Host out.
i really enjoyed The Host.. im not a fan of science fiction but this book was really interesting, it would be awesome if they make a movie about it.
I agree Rosie completely. I was never a fan of science fiction but Meyer changed that entirely.
I just finished reading The Host for the second time. I have never been into science fiction, but wow, this book changed my mind on that completely. I was hoping they were gonna make a movie out of it, I just really hope they get the casting right, nothing ruins it more than getting that wrong atleast for me. I like all Meyers stuff, Im not claiming that she is the best, but it’s the heart melting passion and suspense that she infuses into her stories that captivate me. I blew through every one of her books in 2 days (each). As a wife and mother of 19 with other things to do, I just couldnt put this one down. I’m already itching to read it again haha.
I just finished The Host for the second time. I love that book a lot more than the Twilight series. So all you haters out there either actually read her work or shut up and get a life!
I really loved the host I just got done reading it for a second time. I hope that she comes our with a sequel to the host instead of trying to squeeze every drop dry out of twilight. Although that is what it looks like she is doing. Since she just released a novella for twilight a still has the Edward version to release right? Oh well I still enjoyed the host and for the idiot the said that her writting are cliff notes for people that don’t understand Dan Brown’s novel’s. I read his too. So you should not be so blind to think that only this type of person reads this type of book. That is what us wrong with the world. People are to judgemental. I can read this type of book and Dan Brown and about king henry the eighth if I want cause this is America. I can read what I want.
Amen! I really enjoyed The Twilight Saga and The Host (“Twiligt” least of all) thought not obsessively like some air headed teen. I happen to be a Dickens Fan, but I also like Mark Twain Charlotte Bronte and Jane Austen among others. You don’t have to be an idiot to enjoy Meyer.
thank god for you because all your books are wonerful you did a good\job keep them coming god bless you !
Great. So now we get to hear a bunch of people piss and moan about how Stephanie Meyer is making money off of complete and utter s–t and we get to have another movie that takes up space in the theater that could have been used to show a far better movie.
Stephanie, do me a favor and just go take a long walk off a short dock, kay? It’s the only way to stop all the pain and butthurt you cause everyone who can read.
And finally, the Host is a gigantic rip off of Stargate. No seriously, the “Souls” are carbon copies of the Goa’uld of Stargate SG1. Take a look:
-Goa’uld= Take over human bodies by entering through the neck, claim that the host is completely deleted by this process, and choose from either “range” humans or humans that are free.
-”Souls”= Take over human bodies by entering through the neck, repress human personalities and claim to erase the old ones, and choose from either “range” humans they create themselves or humans that are free.
There is no difference, except one is far cooler. Guess which one.
“Great. So now we get to hear a bunch of people piss and moan about how Stephanie Meyer is making money off of complete and utter s–t and we get to have another movie that takes up space in the theater that could have been used to show a far better movie.”
Would that be you? Why do you even bother reading the article or commenting, if you find that you get “butt hurt” from reading her stuff or even about her, assuming that you can “read”? And if you haven’t read Host, why would you waste your time by looking up information about “souls” you should be busy cherishing Stargate Goa’uld.
No one can really know what the book is actually about until they read it. The way it was advertised one could have thought that it was actually decent this time. So really, make some common sense before you post a comment, this way you may end up appearing like a two year old who can’t link two perfectly reasonable things.
I have nothing against you ‘Twilighters’, and I presume that neither does the person who posted the comment before yours. But I have a problem with you thinking that Stephenie’s work is genuine when it most certainly isn’t.
Just because there is a small amount of similarity in the aliens, the fact that they enter through the neck, does not make it a rip off. The main part of the whole alien plot in The Host is the fact that the Souls are not bad, they are benevolent beings who make worlds that they take over better. The Goa’uld in Stargate are evil and manipulative, even the Tok’Ra are not so selfless. These two different types of aliens are not made to look anything alike and they have nothing else in common. Your one simmilarity that you are making a huge deal out of stems from the fact that anyone with any knowledge of the human body would say that for science fiction, the best place for an alien to take over a body is at the brain, thus entry through the neck. If you truely believe that Stephenie Meyer’s Souls are “carbon copies” of the Goa’uld in Stargate, then either you haven’t read the book and have only heard the story vaguely summarized or you are just plain idiotic.
I’m sure the Goa’uld thought they were making the worlds they were conquering better also, at least for themselves. A truly benevolent being wouldn’t be taking over a world full of sentient beings in the first place.
I love The Host and SG1.
While they may be similar, one is power hungry and violent while the others claim to be pacifists. I really don’t see how you can say they’re exactly the same!
Wow… those who say they hate Stephenie Meyer b/c she’s a bad writer, you have no idea how wrong you are. And those who think that ppl who read her stuff are airheads. You are sooo wrong. I read her books, and I enjoy them. But I also read Dan Brown, Virginia Andrews, Jane Austen, John Grisham, Stephen King. And I’ve enjoyed the classics too. So do not mock us readers. Those who say that Stephenie Meyer is a bad writer, open ur minds, and just read. That’s what you have to do when you’re reading a book… Ur reading from someone else’s perspective, their creativity… And don’t we all have to be openminded about it? Creativity leads to, well, inventions, art, music, and so much more. Just wish that people would be more openminded.
its the idea of love triangles and forbidden loves. The Host wouldn’t fall under my category of science fiction. just another love story with a twist.
and Steph wrote her FIRST 5 books in 4 years; of course they can’t be compared to the classics because she has not had time to develop as an author yet. the thing is every book she writes is always better than the one before. she continues to grow as an author everyday. what is up with all the attacks? i agree that most of the attacks are from men because everyone i know got into fights with their significant others over these books due to jealousy over the time spent reading them. i ignored my husband for a week while i read the saga, book after book and got a whole lotta crap about it. Its not like i complain when he spends all day watching his dumb violent and horror movies. its just plain jealousy.
her books have inspired a love for reading for millions of young girls around the world. how can that honestly be a bad thing? can you think of anything more constructive they can do with their time besides reading? how about sex and drugs? and i’ve read the “classics”….boring. of course teenagers aren’t interested in that. not yet anyway. they need time to mature and to develop a love for reading before they can appreciate things like that. if we continue to force boring literature onto teenagers, the next generation will be illiterate as they will have no desire to ever pick up a book. reading should be fun, not a chore. think about that the next time you decide to criticize someone. and if u dont like her books, DONT READ THEM. believe me, Steph will still survive if u dont.
