Stephenie Meyer announced that she has written the Twilight tie-in novella The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novel. Little,Brown will release the book June 5, pledging $1 from each copy to be donated to the Red Cross for disaster relief in Haiti and Chile. But fans will want to know if this means another Meyer movie, and it doesn’t seem likely at this point. In her disclosure about the 192-page novella—about the young vampire Bree who’s introduced in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse—Meyer reveals that the prose helped Eclipse director David Slade and his castmembers as a research tool but it isn’t clear whether it will stand on its own as a film. Because Summit Entertainment financed the Twilight films—the last book, Breaking Dawn, will be split into two installments—the indie company would likely own the character rights and there will undoubtedly be some begging by a distributor eager to keep the franchise alive.
I can report some forward progress on the movie version of The Host, Meyer’s first adult novel which she optioned last fall to producers Nick Wechsler and Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz–the trio behind the terrific screen adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. Steve Schwartz tells me that Andrew Niccol is working on the third draft of a screenplay which he’s writing in close consultation with the author. The Australian-born Niccol was once the hottest screenwriter in town after his groundbreaking script The Truman Show, and he has followed by writing visionary films like Gattaca and most The City That Sailed—the latter is a project that Will Smith has been attached to for more than a year. Still, Niccol wouldn’t qualify as the hottest director in town and would normally get overlooked for such a plum project. He originally wrote The City That Sailed as a directing vehicle. But Smith, who’d play a New York-based father with a London-based daughter who misses him so much that it causes her seaside town to break away and float toward Gotham, brought on his I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence, until the filmmaker jumped to direct Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz in Water for Elephants for Fox 2000. Fox is now looking for another filmmaker.
Because the producers used their own money, they were not hostage to choosing the flavor of the moment, but rather the right guy. Schwartz said the search went like this: “We asked Stephenie what her favorite science fiction movies were, and one of them was Gattaca,” he sald. “We spent time with Andrew, listened to his vision, introduced Andrew to Stephenie and she responded. There is very good chemistry in this group. Stephenie is a very smart collaborator, and she had an intuitive strong hunch he would be the right guy. Based on the script we’ve seen, we think she was right. We’re thinking this will be shot in early 2011.” They haven’t gone out for production financing—they might put together a cast first and come to the table with a complete package. But Meyer is a viable brand because of Twilight, and based on the incessant inquiries by distributors, Schwartz doesn’t think they will have trouble. “We are budgeting right now,” he said.
The Host is a love story set in the near future, when the Earth has been overrun by benevolent alien parasites that call themselves “souls” and take over the consciousness of humans. The book is about a “soul” called Wanderer, which fuses with a dying woman named Melanie Stryder, bent on discovering the whereabouts of the last pocket of surviving humans. Wanderer, a veteran assimilator, struggles with the dogged determination of the woman to retain her identity and values.

I do not really see how “The Host” is classified as a sci-fi novel. Well, okay, that came off wrong but I do not particularly enjoy sci-fi and the book seemed to me as more of a social commentary on what makes us human. The writing style reminded me much of the “Twilight” series, but better. I do not by any means think that Meyer is a fabulous writer, but then I have to consider the audience (young adults.) I enjoyed READING all her books, but the movies are terrible. I loved “The Host” so much more than any of the other books, so I fear for the movie version. I remember seeing Gattaca a long time ago, and I love the Truman show, but I do truly hope that this director can turn this movie into something great, unlike the corny Twilight. Although, will ANYONE who reads a book before a movie ever be happy?
I think that The Host was an excellent book, and the story line was great! I liked how it was something different and not just about vampires, werewolves, etc.
I really do hope that the movie they make is good, and they pick experienced actors to play important characters. In my eyes, Twilight was a disaster. The remake of the plot, and the actors chosen. I love the Twilight books, although the crap movies made me not like the books as much… I would hate for that to happen with The Host!
Meyer’s Host is based on a book by Robert Heinlein called “The Puppet Masters” – parasitic invaders from outer space. It is also heavily influence by the Goa’uld in Stargate and particularly the gentler Tok’ra. Parasitic worms with a hive mother.
This book is so derivitive that she should be paying royalties!
I loved reading, “The Host!” I could not put it down. Excellent writing, very descriptive, I could see every scene in my mind. I am so excited that a movie is possible. Excellent.
Everyone is so quick to judge. How about if the world judged all you people who talk so much trash. I got it!! Lets have a discussion about what you people can do. Can you write anything and get it published, make millions of dollars on the books alone and then go on to make even more money on the movies? If Stephanie’s books are so horrid why do even bother to comment on them? I guess some people who are so tormented by their own pathetic lives have to bash something. What more do they have right?
I am not a fan of Stephenie Meyer, but I did go through a huge Twilight phase a couple of years ago, before it was common discussion, so I read the Host. It was beyond fantastic. I can’t wait for the movie!
People,
All I just saw here was a lot of anger, negativity and sadness. If you like Stephenie Meyer OK. If you don’t, OK. But I just want all of you to think before you make a post about someone else, whether it’s another blogger or an author or whatever, think to yourself would you like to hear someone say that about you. Hurtful words never helped anybody. Live and let Live. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Trust me, you won’t feel better about anything after you’ve said something mean. It will make you uncomfortable for the rest of the day, I know.
I personally like Meyer as a writer, however that doesn’t mean that the next person will and that doesn’t make me a prissy dummy either. It also doesn’t mean that I’m smarter than anybody else it just proves that sometimes I like a little sugar in my coffee.
So please be polite, be nice and think before you post.
The Host becoming a movie makes extremely excited but also nervous. I loved The Twilight books because of the complex characters and I’m a sucker for a love story
But the movies are completely HORRIBLE compared to the books. Not to mention all the girls running around screaming TEAM such and such is driving me CRAZY! I think all of that sort of took away from the books. So since The Host is the second best book I’ve ever read next to Pride and Predjudice, I really hope that the movie doesn’t totally suck.
Oh yes… The Host Movie! I just can’t wait. It is my fav book of all time, and you can bet a critic like me has read alot of my share of books. It was beyond anything I could have expected, and way better than most syfy alien novels. I love the Host, and give my thanks to Stephanie who made it all happen, in novel form. -Markie
Look, Stephenie Meyer has said it herself that she hasn’t been a writer for long but she has always been a storyteller. Give the woman a break. How many of you have a job that you love, a beautiful family that you love, and a lifetime of opportunity ahead of you? She is a very talented person no matter how you want to look at it. If you don’t like The Host then why the hell are you here talking about it in the first place? Go support those things that you do enjoy. Do you people just feed off of being negative. You people are the reason people like me need books like The Host… to try to believe that there are still some rational, loving, open-minded people in the world.
I loved the book and I am curious about the movie but I do hope that they do it right. This is one of those stories that will be very hard to portray on film.
I think that those of you who feel like bashing Stephanie on a public forum is necessary are just very sad people. These books, the Twilight series and The Host, have gotten millions of children and adults reading for pleasure. Regardless of your opinions, Stephanie Meyer’s works are benafiting society. Not to mention, inspiring young people and making them think about a world outside themselves. By all means, voice your opinions but please, keep it respectful.
So I think people have gotten distracted from the whole point of sharing enthusiasm or the opposite of enthusiasm. Don’t rag on other people for their statements. Please be an adult and just say how you feel about the book itself and the future movie and disregard other peoples comments.
I PERSONALLY love the book. It really brings out a great imaginative world. I like to think about what I would do if that ever really happened. I also think that instead of Jared being loving when he sees Melanie both times he tries robbing her or he punched her in the face. It wasn’t a gushy love at first site situation. I think its great to find books that really put your imagination to work. It was fun for me
Calm down, it’s just books and authors. You people are so boring.
Calm down, it’s just books and authors. You people are so boring. You was suppose to base you comment on the article.
I agree with Noresmee, WHOLEHEARTALEY!
For all of you who read it, I was wondering, is The Host okay for a preteen to read? My daughter read the Twilight series and loved it. Is The Host really an adult novel? Is there inappropriate stuff in the book that she shouldn’t see or is it similar to the Twilight series?
I have read the Host and yes, it is okay for a preteen to read. There is nothing much inappropriate in it. The 4th Twilight, Breaking Dawn, probably had more adult content than the Host does. I think its just an adult novel because it deals with heavier stuff. Morally, and all, there is less fluff, less black and white to the good and bad guys, and the Host also is just a more in-depth read. So if your preteen is a strong reader, this should be no problem and an interesting book for her. That is just my opinion though, other people may have other comments.
I just finished reading The Host for the 5th time and everytime I do I am really amazed by how Stephanie Meyers brings you into the book. I feel as the characters do so for me I will continue to enjoy her books and read them no matter how bad some of the comments are.
the host may not be the most prestigious book out there, but it was an enjoyable read and an interesting book. I am excited to see how they adapt the book into the movie, however if the people who made the road are doing the movie i am a little concerned. The road was very weird, long and sort of creepy.
To everyone criticizing The Host or Twilight, or any book, let me ask. How many of you actually read the book? And if you did read it and didn’t like it, move on. I read and loved the The Host. I read it 4 times. I would love for it to be a movie. But if you read The Host and didn’t like it, no one is going to force you to watch the movie.
I liked the host because of the way it was written in first peson takes you through emotions that are pure and real. I was reminded of the moment Bella woke from being changed and the way it was written puts you as the reader in her shoes in that moment. What would it be like if you were living through those moments as a host or a vampire? I think it was brilliant! I have read a lot of books and the emotion evoked by these was different than the others because of Meyers method. I can see Meagan Fox more than Jessica alba as Melanie. Her character needs a toughness that’s pretty but not sweet, alba has a sweet face, fox is pretty but tough:) as for the other characters, they should stay away from A listers and try for ppl who really fit the look and emotion of the characters:) just my opinion
i loved The Host and it’s my favourite book of all time!!! I’m sure most people won’t agree with me on that but it’s how i feel.
For the people that say bad things about the book, you have no right. If you didn’t enjoy it and gave up half way through then how do you know it doesn’t get better? And if you did read it all the way through then something must have been good about it.
I can’t wait until the film comes out, but i love the book so much i’m just worried it won’t fill my high expectations.
Also i really wish Meyer would right another book on the Host as i would do anything to find out what happens next it would be so exciting!!!!! so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Stephanie right another one!!!!!!
Who are you people who criticise the Twilight saga and The Host? Yes I loved the books but even if i didn’t I would never be so insulting about it. So these books aren’t your taste… but it is to the millions of people that bought these books. There is a reason why Stephenie Meyer has such a huge fan base, she appealed to millions of people and she made a whole lot of money out of it, so tell me… who is untalented? Stephenie Meyer who is now rich, or the critics who says it’s all a load of rubbish. Well the situation as it is speaks for itself, The Twilight Saga was a huge success!!!
So what makes a good book? a book that you critics “approve” of? or a book that hits the world by storm and has actually made a lot more young people want to read rather than play on their xbox’s.
I’ll let you ponder on that…
stephanie writtes the best books you can ever read and i can tell this the host movie will something to remember and iam so glad that it is going to the big screen
Do NOT judge the book for the author! The Host is NOT sci-fi and NOT Twilight. There.. I hope you all ( who will not read it) got that ..
She must be doing something correct as she has made millons of dollars and sold millions of books and millions of people love Twilight and the Host. Each to their own. Have you had a book published? Have you had your book turned into a movie? If not then what ever and if you have maybe you are just jealous either way.
