EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros want to be on a long laugh track with its Cop Out star, Tracy Morgan. The 30 Rock co-star has just made a deal to star in ID Theft, a comedy that casts him as a cash-strapped father who sees a shortcut out of his struggles when the credit card of a suburban dad lands in his lap. The script is being written by Colin Jost and Rob Klein, from an original pitch by Kristofor Brown. Morgan has given his own notes to the screenwriters, and 3 Arts and American Work are producing.
Paramount separately has Morgan set to star with TJ Miller in Freshman Roommates, and is negotiating with the Blades of Glory team John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky to write the next draft because original writers John Mulaney and Nick Kroll were booked.
Morgan’s movie momentum has been a slow build, compared to many fellow Saturday Night Live alums whose careers flamed out after one film–especially those who starred in feature expansions of SNL skits. I always thought Morgan was underutilized during a period of SNL where the casts included Will Ferrell, Chris Kattan, Cheri Oteri, Horatio Sanz and Jimmy Fallon. Morgan smartly followed head writer Tina Fey to 30 Rock, and the show has allowed Fey, Alec Baldwin and now Morgan to stay in New York and be selective about hiatus films.
New ‘Man Of Steel’ Television Spot #6

While I enjoyed Season 1-3 of 30 Rock, I am surprised he’s getting more noticed now during their worst season (not only for them, but the jokes are HORRIBLE).
Ditto. I don’t get all the hype…he’s just not funny. Dave Chappelle he ain’t.
And he’s always the same character , in movies and on TV. The bumbling, hesitant clown. It just doesn’t work for me.
Here we go again…let’s consider somebody a success because they made or where in an awful “movie.” It really is out of hand. And TJ Miller? Goddamn. Not funny. Guy changed his hair but forgot the funny. There is a real cancer in the movie business right now. It needs a complete overall. Something drastic has to happen. I can’t take it anymore!!
Let’s get back to great scripts. Not hyped scripts by hyped writers who write movies that at best break even. That is not success my friends. We want great material. It’s out there. Just look. Stop accepting everything because it is from 3 Arts. Because 10 years ago you didn’t accept anything from 3 Arts. Now the same people you didn’t accept from you buy from without using your brains. How about taking the names off of scripts and having the executives read and decide on material based on that? Let’s see what movies get made then. Let’s see.
Tracy Morgan. Many people have come around late on him. But I think he is really funny. But Cop Out was terrible. Everything about. So what do we do. We give him another three four five six failures until one hits. Eventually one will hit. It’s just the odds.
Let’s go back to you make a quality film you get to do more. Not box office but quality. Because if someone can write or direct or act quality then it is in them to also have financial success.
Enough of the McG’s and I use that name has the name of a brand. It’s called hype and it houses, McG, Kevin Smith, Brett Ratner etc.
We need the original Harvey Weinstein back. Please Harvey. Fuck them all and come back to us.
Thank you.
I think he has a future in the movies, but I don’t see him as an A-Lister in the long run like Warner Bros is betting on. He might even be helped after 30 Rock ends because people might expect him to be Tracy Jordan in every role, and that’s not a role he should be playing forever.
With the right roles, I can see Morgan have the same career path as a Martin Lawrence.
Good to see Jost & Klien (SNL writers) get a feature under their belt.
Tracy Morgan has one note and that’s loud accompanied by a lot of mugging. It worked for Chris Tucker twice in “Rush Hour” twice – but where is he now…?
What’s with all the Tracy hate? He’s the only consistently funny part of 30 Rock and his bits from the Copout trailer really make me want to ignore all the critics and just laugh when he’s on. He is a genius at deadpan humor and plays a sweet moron better than anybody else in town. Glad he’s getting the work, hope somebody other than Tina Fey sees he has more to offer than making semi-funny lines more hilarious.
Yo people. Tracy Morgan is the bomb. If you don’t get it, your sense of humor might be wack. But whatever.
It does not matter in the slightest that Tracy is ‘not funny’ (a premise I personally find without merit), what really matters is that he makes his role work, whatever he’s given.
He’s a fine actor, and a smart guy and pretty shrewd at navigating the sharkwaters that are ‘Hollywood’…
… I’d love to see him in some more serious roles.
Tracy’s appearances on Opie & Anthony helped restart his somewhat dormant career. And how did Tracy replay them, by not showing up on their show to promote Cop Out.
I believe he did appear on Stern though, if I’m not mistaken. Where he keeps showing up all the time. Meanwhile, the idea of a film about a feel-good dad who commits identity fraud and rips off someone else sure sounds like a laugher to me.. *slaps forhead*
morgan is occasionally amusing, particularly in small doses, and one day perhaps might prove a superior character actor in the odd feature…he’s got the makings of one who could slip away with a scene or two in his hip pocket…but a bankable lead?…unlikely…
Nobody cares about his appearance on O & A. He went on Stern and kills every time. Tons of comedians have said they get deals based entirely on someone hearing them on Stern. Anyway I don’t find Tracy to be that great an actor but he’s one hell of a stand up. He seems like a great guy I wish him luck.
Once again we see that if you just keep shoving a person in everyone’s face, eventually you can make them a star- no matter how untalented they are.
I personally find Tracy Morgan to be an embarrassment. I cannot watch “30 Rock” without feeling what my mother must have felt about Stepin Fetchit or “Amos and Andy.” He’s a willing caricature.
Recent Jimmy Fallon guest comic Nick Vatterott is a talented comedy writer as well as a performer. They would do well to use his comic creativity to at least write for Tracy Morgan’s new movie. His type of humor would be a good fit.
Tracy Morgan has never and will never be funny. I don’t care what you say or what you think if you like Tracy Morgan then you are mentally retarded. You probably think conan obrien is funny too. Don’t have kids. We don’t need any more idiots in this world.
