Paramount Pictures is jumping into the 3D fray. The studio will convert the M. Night Shyamalan-directed The Last Airbender into 3D, using Stereo D, the company that worked on James Cameron’s Avatar. Release date will remain July 2. Get used to those 3D glasses, is the message, here, I guess. Shyamalan is pretty particular about his movies, so he must be sold on the conversion process. I still need to see more conversions to be sold on them. I attended the Tribeca Festival premiere of Shrek Forever After, the DreamWorks Animation film that was conceived in 3D. I found the 3D aspects of the film to be absolutely thrilling. It absolutely enhanced the razor sharp computer animation. 3D conversions have a lot to live up to, but at the same time, the enhancement to the box office revenues of Clash of the Titans was undeniable. Insiders say the conversion will cost Paramount between $5M to $10M, which is likely money that will be recouped — at an extra 3 bucks a ticket.
New ‘Man Of Steel’ Television Spot #6

Oh yay, another shit conversion job, because apparently, they didn’t learn a goddamn thing with the release and complete failure of Clash of the Titans. Guess it doesn’t matter anyways, because M. Night Shamalamadingdong hasn’t made a decent movie since Signs.
Clash is a failure…How about more than $325 million combined total so far? Most people want to jump on the hate train for clash but it’s gonna make more than 98% of stuff that comes out this year
Exactly. Clash will make 500 worldwide at minimum, probably more like 600. That is astonishingly good business. And I thought the movie was good.
I believe he meant that the 3D was a failure. And the movie is not making nearly as much as it could be. Imagine if it had good 3D, could have been one of the years top grosses, at least domestically.
Wow, finally someone who gets it. Like I said, had the 3D been shot natively, the film would be grossing a hell of a lot more money, but because they did a slap-dash conversion job, the film received poor reviews not only because the movie sucked, but because the 3D was terrible, and the film bombed at the U.S. box office. Apparently some of the DUMB BASTARDS that replied to me don’t realize that. Especially after the high cost of making the film, $300 worldwide is not impressive.
$2.7 billion is impressive…$300 million, not so much.
JohnDoe,
$325,424,370 does not equal complete failure.

No bueno.
Though I am slightly amused that the company that worked on Avatar‘s 3D is now working on a property originally titled … Avatar.
The thing about this movie is: it’s doesn’t look like a typical M. Night movie, but it’s rare for a director to completely change styles. And M. Night has always been best at creating a mood and slowly building tension, not playing to the crowd with “Oh! Ah!” effects.
So I’m not sure how 3D is going to help or enhance this movie, if it’s been shot the way M. Night normally shoots his movies? Other than a fireball hurtling towards the audience here, or a jump kick there. Which seems like a cheesy reason to make a movie 3D.
………Well, just maybe that’s not the case??
Fool us once, (Clash) shame on you. Fool us twice, (Airbender) shame on me. If I do decide to see this, 2-D is the only way I am going to see it. If it’s not shot or conceived in 3-D, then I will not see it in 3-D. It’s as simple as that.
And I really hope that audiences will not let Paramount take the extra 3 to 5 bucks from them. Ticket prices are expensive enough.
Hell with conversions…
but I cannot wait for David Hackl’s just announced The Butcher Bride 3D… based on the best-selling novel.
M. Night Shyamalan hasn’t made a good movie since The Sixth Sense and it’s been downhill ever since.
I quite enjoyed Unbreakable. *kanyeshrug*
Its’ too bad really because the new trailers really are showing off some amazing visuals for this movie. If this post processing muddies it up at all it would be an unfortunate thing to have happen to all the good work that appears to have been done to date.
I will not see anything in 3D that wasn’t conceived in 3D personally. It’s such a cynical cash grab and they are probably killing the true process and what it can legitimately add to a feature.
Rumor is the perfs are atrocious and this is strictly a money grab on Par’s part.
I wonder if there’s a conversion process to convert the actors of this movie to real Asian instead of putting everyone in yellow face. That would definitely improve the last Airbender.
LOL, WIN! *applause*
they’re converting it to 3D because Ted Turner couldn’t colorize it for them and they had to spend the money on something…
They should retrofit “The Happening.” I’ve always wanted to see a career die in 3D.
hahahaha!!! hilarious!
WOW.
As if The Last Airbender’s “racebending” isn’t nauseous enough.
“Shyamalan is pretty particular about his movies”?!?! Really? What was his particularity about LADY IN THE WATER and THE HAPPENING? To bore us to death?
‘Shyamalan is pretty particular about his movies’.
He is only the director and nothing more. He no longer has the clout like he used to esp after the failure of his last few releases.
So what power he has now to want to have a say on how the movies is released?
I won’t see this 2D or 3D. Officially off the M. Night train but you can save money on drugs and watch The Village again, that movie will fuck you up.
Now here is a pic that is going absolutely nowhere…
(Oh, and that goes for Sands of Time (the Jake vehicle) too)…
Nothing for audiences to connect to…
Oh well, there’s always the overseas markets.
3D Blog
oops. i have 2 blogs open. sorry. i didn’t realize. sorry.
I fear this movie will be terribly disappointing. Avatar is one of the best cartoons ever made.
What makes the show so wonderful is the humor, positive messages without being preachy, and great character development. Unfortunately, M Night is not known for any of these.
Dont be duped by the whole 3D hoax. Everything converted to 3D or shot in 3D allows ticket prices to be jacked up. Avatar didn’t sell a lot of tickets because it was available in 3D. People saw it again and again because it was a good movie. It made as much money as it did because the ticket prices were higher. Clash of the Titans was not enhanced by being converted to 3D. In fact, if you were watching the 3D version and took off your glasses, it didnt even look blurry, which means there was not much happening in 3D! One more thing… the Avatar DVD and Blu-Ray sold many units and it was not in 3D!
I think that movie stats should not be about how much the movie grossed, but simply how many tickets it sold.
I’ve been looking forward to seeing The Last Airbender for a couple years so hearing about its conversion to 3D is a MAJOR bummer for me. I actually liked Clash of the Titans, but hated the 3D aspects of it. It incited one of the worst migraines I’ve ever had (true story). So will I see another film which is converted to 3D? No, never. Clash was dragged down by the horrible 3D in my opinion.
In short, I agree with previous posters: I too will never again see a movie in 3D which has not been conceived and shot in 3D. Many friends and family that I’ve talked to feel the same way. We like movies conceived and shot in 3D, but we loathe the fakey 3D that results from “conversions.”
