Allen and Albert Hughes, who have co-directed all of their features, are beginning to take a divide and conquer approach. The twins have always tag-teamed, most recently on the Denzel Washington-starrer The Book of Eli. They are supposed to next direct a big Warner Bros project, Akira, and there have been rumors they want to work solo that have created questions about the Warners film based on the 1988 anime. I’m told that the siblings haven’t split, but they are changing their approach. Albert will take the lead on Akira, while Allen will concentrate on directing the HBO series pilot Gentlemen of Leisure, a spin-off of their documentary American Pimp. What is not clear is whether either project will carry a solo credit, because the brothers still do work together.

Can’t wait to see Gentlemen of Leisure. Allen Hughes is one of my favorite people on the planet.
The Boys have a caustic relationship on every single level. Problem is that they need each other. One is great technically and has the vision while the other is great with actors and has the voice. They’re dynamic when they’re on. Now if the studio can slow down the legalization of marijuana in this state and keep them away from Prague, they might get these titles in on time…
An American Pimp series…ew. I love most of the Hughes Brother’s work, but American Pimp was vile. Little more than sloppy blowjob to hideous, hideous human beings who make their “living” by exploiting mostly underaged girls.
I don’t think you got the message of American Pimp.It wasn’t exactly a glorifying portrayal of the pimp lifestyle.I mean, these so call pimps exaggerated their lifestyles to make themselves seem like gods, but in the ends most of them were living in run down one room apartments or in prison.Watching the film only reconfirmed the ignorance and the pathetic nature of the pimp.
that said, a quote from the film did represent one of the highlights of Idiocracy.
I feel like this is the same as when Outkast did separate albums
You mean, it will be the best thing they ever did? Who gets to make “The Love Below” and who gets stuck with “Speakerboxxx”?
Speakerboxxx was a good album. Let’s not forget, it was the half with the #1 chart topping single “I Like The Way You Move.”
Because you’re vaguely racist and very unclever?
The Book of Eli was an embarrassingly bad film.
you say it was a bad film because a black man played as some one of the bible that is what they looked like they are from the east and during biblical times their were no white looking people in that part of the world why do people stay in this fantasy read genesis
The “Gentlemen of Leisure” script is one of the best pilots I’ve ever read. Evan Reilly is a genius.
Thanks for chiming in, Evan.
do you have a link for the script. would love to take a look.
HBO desperately needs something like ‘Gentlemen of Leisure’. Right now it’s overdosing on the twee (Bored to Death), the stakesless (How To Make It In America), and the good-but-not-great (Hung).
The Sopranos in the world of the pimp — by a Hughes Brother? — sounds much closer to something I’d want to see.
Its heresy to let these hacks direct Akira. Its been over a decade since “Menace”, and EVERY effort since has been absolute rubbish. Why let them helm what could be – in the right hands – the next “Avitar”? What a waste of an opportunity.
It’s hard to take seriously a comment which misspells ‘Avatar’.
So you’re unable to rebut any of my points and must resort to pointing out typos. Got it.
“Its heresy to let these hacks direct Akira. Its been over a decade since “Menace”, and EVERY effort since has been absolute rubbish”
They have had a total of three feature films since “Menace to Soceity”, not a lot by any measure, and while none of those film have been great, they were far from rubbish.I saw Akira a few years back and it was a decent film, but a maasterpiece it wasn’t, so saying it heresy for The Hughes Brother to direct it is nonsense.Decent directors for a decent film…
If you thought “Akira” was just a “decent” film, you’re in a small minority. If you think these two are “decent” directors, you’re in an equally small minority.
Too add insult to injury, the script SUCKS. Its the worst sort of cliched nonsense. There is no justification for setting the film anywhere besides Tokyo. Its Nihonism IS the reason why the original is so beloved. Change that, and all you have is yet another silly disaster film set in Manhattan. The fact that they’re going ahead with the “Neo-Manhattan” (ugh) angle suggests they don’t really understand why the source material is so popular. Its going to be a very, very costly mistake.
This is a film that will live and die by fanboy word of mouth, and when they hear about the absolute silliness of the script, they will skewer it before the first images leak. Do this right, WB, or run – don’t walk – away.
can you say NY State tax credit?
