Darren Aronofsky and Rachel Weisz are mobilizing Jackie, a drama scripted by TV producer Noah Oppenheim drama. It would cast Weisz (who is Aronofsky’s offscreen partner) as Jackie Kennedy in the immediate aftermath of the assassination of her husband, President JFK.
The project is being packaged and shopped by CAA, which is in the process of lining up financing. Oscar-winner Weisz certainly has the chops to play the iconic former First Lady. The project surfaced recently amid a report that Steven Spielberg would be involved, but I can tell you that he isn’t part of the package at this point. Aronofsky (The Wrestler) will produce with Protozoa partner Scott Franklin. We’ll stay tuned to see if anybody bites on this one. The move comes as Hyperion acquired a collection of seven interviews that Kennedy Onassis did with Arthur Schlesinger Jr. in 1964 about her time in the White House. The book will be published in 2011.

awesome! i can’t wait to see how this develops.
Another Jackie O project after A Woman Named Jackie; the Kennedy miniseries; the miniseries Robert Kennedy & His Times; Jackie: An American Life; Jackie, Joan and Ethel; et al?
Our generation doesn’t exactly remember her contributions to the arts and historic preservation; her style and elegance; and her public stoicism in the wake of President Kennedy’s assassination. Equally important, her life following the assassination is overshadowed by her marriage to Onassis. I Pray the Aronosky/Weisz pairing delivers a fresh twist to the story.
I frankly cannot wait to see this
Sure. Why not?
Read wikipedia much, John Mendez?
She does look like her and she is a very good actress. If it isn’t a vanity project, I think they’ll pull it off.
In a word: Hell Yes!
Rachel finds the truth in every role she’s been in. She’s a very good actress…as was proven by her Oscar win. I can’t say that I’m thrilled about another Jackie biopic, but I will see it to watch Rachel act. I’ve never seen her act poorly.
Save the money for better causes and just read Schlesinger’s DEATH OF A PRESIDENT. It is a film in writing and NOTHING on screen could ever capture the genuine raw emotion. Leave this one alone….
Death of A President is by William Manchester
Double, double the yes’s.
It fits. So did Caroline sign off on the pic alreay.
Will it be update ala the tapes.
Who will play Teddy, better yet Bobby.
Will it be a Kitty Kelly tell all or just varnised over French Oak.
Can I play the butler?
Aronofsky will make it unique.
I just want to say, and I don’t have any connection to the writer, Noah Oppeheim, except through a mutual friend. But it is so heartening to see someone actually write something of substance. Yeah, great, The Hangover made money, the point is to make money, but there is something to be said for quality entertainment that also makes money. I know the adult drama is dead, but between American Pie and Harold and Kumar (the latter of which I did enjoy), there is comedy and drama that is not only entertaining, but of quality. Iron Man comes to mind. Hell, Swinger, Favreau’s first project, it’s now an iconic independent film, but if that movie came out in today’s landscape, it would have made 100MM at the box office given more specific marketing and Twitter and all that. Here’s to quality filmmaking.
I hope they have Big Edie and Little Edie in it.
sorry, but just have to say…you can’t make it unique. It was exactly what it was. I don’t see where you can put a “fresh twist” on absolute fact (I’m not talking all the theories- the interviews and book have nothing to do with that). This is not entertainment. JFK was based on the Garrison theory, that was a twist…the Schlesinger interviews were based on fact within days. Facts so painful, the Kennedy family tried for years to have the book not published b/c of the rawness. The felt they rushed to judgement agreeing to it while in shock. So it is all there….in that book. Does anyone read anymore? The is not “adult entertainment”, it is exploitation for a vanity project for an actress. If compelled to make a Kennedy film, how about Ted’s career long fight for healthcare -that is relevant, or Bobby relationship with the plight of American Indians and the child he was going to bring to Hyannis for the summer until he was killed in June -that would open some eyes and be relevant. The definitive 11/22/1963 has been done in one of the most extraordinary books ever written.
Rachel Weitz is a great actress and can definitely pull this off. And she is beautiful as well. Can’t wait.
I like Weisz, I’m sure she’ll do great. Though Jean Triplehorn looks more like Jackie O. Always wondered why I’ve never seen her taking that role on.
Nothing beats a Brit playing one of the most influential American women of the Century.
Rachel Weisz is now doing a tv movie? Wow!
Jumping from IRON MAN to SWINGERS, you imply Favreau directed the latter, which he didn’t. He only wrote, co-produced and starred. Doug Liman directed….who has how become a studio hack.
SWINGERS – great movie though.
Oh yeah, and relevant to his article, love Weisz and Aronofsky.
Before anybody considers financing this, i’d suggest that they go watch the last movie Aronofsky and Weisz made,’The Fountain’, a commercial and critical disaster, and one of the worst films ever made
that narrow point of view is exactly the kind of thinking that hampered the fountain’s pre-pro process and cut its funding in half. what should have been a masterpiece was crippled by lack of faith and financial support. the result is a flawed film, yes, but a misunderstood one. and you can’t deny that its at least visually stunning.
if anything, the wrestler (in the aftermath of the fountain) has proven that even when hollywood retreats from aronofsky, he can still make movie magic. it was a taut, well-structured and thoughtful character study that highlighted beautiful acting. i think the man obviously knows how to turn out a quality product with everything stacked against him. why shouldn’t he deliver on a great script, about an american legend, portrayed by an academy award-winning actress with whom he, as a director, can communicate initimately?
the stars are aligning for this one. and to all the not-another-jackie-movie nay-sayers: our culture needs jackie like it needs hamlet and medea. she may be gone but her story is here to stay, as it should be.
the fountain was a huge disappointment on every level.
This sounsd like a movie that should ONLY be made for tv and should be played by an American.
