Yes, the agents are leaving their Century City marble mausoleum for Ojai starting tomorrow because it’s retreat time. For the next few days, the scheduled speakers include tennis star Andre Agassi (who can give a how-to lecture about lying to the public to cover up a year’s worth of crystal meth addiction), Universal Studios COO/president Ron Meyer (who can provide a blow-by-blow account about making a year of money-losing movies), and Tom Cruise (who can discuss what it’s like to disappear into the witness protection program after losing his career and his studio). But if CAA truly wished to look inward, it would ask one of its own male agents — maybe Mike Nilon? — to discuss the pitfalls of dating actresses. The toppers at this agency have a history of coupling with clients (Bryan Lourd and Carrie Fisher, Richard Lovett and Kristy Swanson). And now it’s considered acceptable behavior at CAA given the openness of current relationships between John Campisi and Hilary Swank, and Jim Toth and Reese Witherspoon. Mixing business and romance can be a dangerous combination in Hollywood — not to mention a messy lawsuit.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Messy maybe or a brilliant way for A) an actor to make sure they are getting the best job opportunities possible and B) also another way to stop them from marrying fellow actors. Nothing is worst in this town then two actors getting married when they know it is 75% more likely they will get a divorce from them anyway.
You all know CAA is the best in the business and even those domestic mistakes have been displayed at the company’s account….we all know they are the biggest the best and really are an amazing company.
I see CAA reads this.
Did you have to take a little shot at CAA since there’s been so much bad coming out recently on WME, Nikki? I’d take a little inner-company dating over shoddy work and allegations of racism any day. Don’t feel responsible for WME’s demise. They have done it all to themselves.
Nikki could you please hire someone to cover the music departments at all the percentaries and at the record labels?
I’d love to see someone shit on them all with such impunity!
Would be great fun!
Hillary Swank is straight up gross. I saw her making out with one of the barbarian brothers at gold’s gym venice when she was training for million dollar baby. A barbarian brother!? Yucky!
And who DOESN’T love Jim Toth?
I did craft service on THINK BIG in 1989 with the Barbarian Brothers. One of them would quote Nietzsche then stab a knife through my cookie arrangement. True story.
Oh well! At least Cruise is covered. And I’ve never thought much of CAA anyway.
Ouch !!!
Yeesh, Nikki, way to take a non-story (CAA is on retreat) and juice it up with completely unrelated snarky comments in order to get people (like myself, I suppose) to comment!
Firstly, despite their struggles, no one would seriously dispute the notion that Agassi, Meyer and Cruise are highly successful individuals and could offer a lot to an audience.
Secondly, Nilon’s problem wasn’t that he married an actress – it’s that he cheated on his wife and got caught (and that doesn’t only happen to CAA agents, it happens to a lot of people).
And thirdly, what’s wrong with agent/client co-mingling? The agents are getting what they want (self-promotion and the opportunity to have sex with a star), and the actresses are getting what they want (more attention from agents at the biggest agency of them all). Seems like a fair deal to me?
you’re stupid. you are totally excusing your own habit of fucking actors in your position of power. at the end of the day whatever excuse you present it’s pathetic to date someone on your roster.
caa is a joke, classless coporate garbage, wme demise? lol, your a fool.
Does not Hollywood function on a daily mix of business and pleasure? Or is that the adult biz?
I’ll take your reply offline…
You are funny Nikki. Really, that was a very amusing read and a moments respite from the WME news round. Thanks!
dont forget partner and music department bossman Rob Light was married to Sheena Easton. and everyone does love Jim Toth.
At least Nilon isn’t dating Nic Cage.
Wasn’t Ojai once the spiritual home of Krishnamurti and a haven from LA crudity? CAA and its creepy clients should slouch to some other Bethlehem
K @ Ojai…thanks for the memory.
So Andre Agassi, Ron Meyer, and Tom Cruise suck? Jesus. Tough crowd.
This is the snarkiest post I’ve ever seen
Those rumors aren’t true about WME , and Tom Cruise has had a rough couple years but he’s still in the business still getting paid the 20 million salary so to me he’s has the right credentials to be a speaker at this event
Nikki: THIS is why I LOVE and READ you!!!!!!!
come on – everyone knows that most actors are whores, who will do anything for the next gig and agents are pimps.
A much better name for this site is:
Snarkarama
Did John Campisi dump his wife and toddler for Hilary Swank?
Why did Hilary Swank throw Chad Lowe under the bus in an interview for Vanity Fair?
And yes, everybody loves Toth!
And yes, Swank and Campisi are both morally bankrupt.
And Tom Cruise is short. I mean, he just IS.
Why does everyone love Toth?
i thought everybody loved raymond. huh…
caa is a joke. wme is not better. i still predict actors will smarten up and get rid of agents–they are so not needed. use a publicist, maybe a manager, and an attorney—what do agents do all day? seriously? they cock block deals, dont give clients projects, negate offers, abuse each other and those in industry.
has anyone ever wondered why most movie stars are history
and studios are rehashing new actors all the time
because everyone got sick of agents trying to pimp their actors–and b and c level actors
I’ll never forget a while back i was putting a film together and needed at least 20% presales based on cast–an agent at caa tried to convince me to hire an up and coming actor no one has ever heard off claiming “HE CAN PRE-SELL JAPAN”. WTF?
I completely agree with UkFilmSnob.
Agents are on the outs.
For all talent out there, it’s time to wise up and realize being proactive and taking control of your career is way more important than securing some agent who is trying to skim that 10% & take credit for whatever deal might be brokered.
Sure, the powerhouses will stay in business — but savvy individuals have already/will very soon be able to stay employed by developing a strong brand/rep on their own without a bunch of corporate d-bags interfering.
Hollywood isn’t going to survive if agents keep trying to up the cost for talent.
Don’t forget the Michael Kives-Dave Bugliari fiasco over Alyssa Milano. At least Dave married her after losing his best friend over it. What does Ben Best have to say about that?
I believe Marilyn Monroe dated her agent who made her famous, so this is nothing new. When you’re a famous actress is hard to date given your choices are much more limited. To date or marry another actor so he can get someone else pregnant and leave you such as Brad Pitt / Aniston? or Bullock with Jesse James who slept with porn stars / strippers? For actresses to date other actors is a nightmare!
Some of the CAA agents are good looking ( I think some of those guys are hot, I would date them even if they weren’t agents at CAA), they would be a great catch for actresses, and they are more image conscious because they have to be for their jobs, so less liabilities and are all upside! Actress / agent is a great combination, since they’re both in the business together.
A beautiful actress and a handsome agent with chemistry…nothing is wrong with that! More power to them! Actresses are not whores, and agents are not pimps! I think this whole topic is HOT!!!!
@gorgeous777
Your naivete is endearing. And what bus did you just get off?
Welcome back Nikki!
David Bugliari/Alyssa Milano? Does the list end? CAA male agents rock their female clients worlds. But do any of the female agents rock their male clients worlds?
I gather from your question that you never heard about how Kim Hodgert “helped” CAA sign Collin Farrell?
Anonymous, you can sometimes be pretty with it, but on this you are off the mark.
You are absolutely correct! My mistake. I was thinking of Kelly Tiffan.
