EXCLUSIVE: Curtis Hanson is in talks to direct and Clark Gregg will write a film based on the true story of a mystery man who showed up to a small Missouri town and led a crackdown that cleaned up a scourge of meth labs — only to be exposed as a bank security guard with a Walter Mitty complex and a phony badge. Fox Searchlight has signed on to the film that will be produced by John Davis, Dan Spilo and David Klawans.
The drama is based on Bill Anthony Jakob, a 36-year-old bank security guard who was indicted on a 23-count federal indictment for impersonating a law enforcement officer in a small Missouri town. He optioned his life rights to the producers in 2008, when his escapades became a national media story. Armed with a phony badge, Jakob convinced officials in a town of 1200 residents that he could use the Patriot Act and the Homeland Security Dept. to crack down on the drug dealers. It worked well until a reporter writing about the hero uncovered the truth with a simple Internet search. The original intent was to turn the premise into a comedy. But it wasn’t funny for the real law enforcement officers because the fakery tainted all of the arrests which Jakob made.

Story Matters Here, on both AMC, and at Fox Searchlight.
Great…Fox Searchlight and Curtis together means good material in the hands of a damn good director. I traveled with Curtis on a trip to Palm Springs once. It was one of the most enjoyable times being with a director. He was easy going, appreciative, inclusive and not a picky eater. Funny, I was thinking about him recently and walla…good luck Curtis.

Not a picky eater? Is that the new criteria for someone being good to work with?
In this town, I think not a picky eater is criterion number one.
I remember way back on a set when John Travolta insisted on defogged ice cubes (made only from distilled water) and had a catering girl brought over from another location because only she could make a turkey sandwich that was appropriately moist.
Wanted to say I’m a big fan of Kirk Honeycutt’s reviews. I think they are honest.
Curtis Hanson is such a talented director it’s amazing to me that he doesn’t direct more — and yet Brett Ratner is always working… Weird.
Hanson doesn’t need to work. He’s already wealthy. He has the option of picking movies and stories he wants to do and tell.
Dan, I am happy to see you doing so well.
This project is so cool that Paramount bought it for Plan B TWO YEARS AGO and they already have a script!!! Way to do your research, Searchlight.
Can’t we do SOMETHING to force Hanson to make another movie from a James Ellroy novel? He did such a great job on LA CONFIDENTIAL – I wish to hell he’d do a few more. . . . bet they’d all become classics, too.
The scam Spilo must be running to put this one together, lord only knows.
Curtis can do anything. Great Guy. Amazing talent.
