I hear ABC is considering a two-season renewal for Desperate Housewives that may mark the end of the successful ABC dramedy. There have been indications that ABC may go for a straight two-year pickup, including making deals with key writers on the show. Creator/executive producer Marc Cherry already has a deal in place with producing studio ABC Studios for three more years. If Desperate Housewives indeed ends its run after eight seasons, he is expected to focus on development in the final year of his deal. ABC brass has been anxiously awaiting a new project from Cherry, who flirted with development this year with two projects, a dramedy and a half-hour, but couldn’t devote time on them with his attention on running Desperate Housewives. In 2008, Cherry had said he envisioned Desperate Housewives ending after nine seasons. The core four actresses on the show, Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Eva Longoria Parker and Marcia Cross, have deals through next season. They have been approached by ABC Studios about agreeing to options for two more seasons but there has been little communication between the actresses and the studio on the matter.
Meanwhile over at Grey’s Anatomy, which recently saw original cast member Katherine Heigl exit, the key cast members, including Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey also have deals through next season. I hear that at least Dempsey and possibly Pompeo too may not want to continue on the show beyond that. Of course, as an ensemble medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy may reinvent itself and continue with new central characters the way ER did through a series of cast departures. Desperate Housewives and Grey’s Anatomy, both of which launched during the 2004-05 season, are down in the ratings by double digits this season but continue to be ABC’s top scripted series along with departing Lost, also from the 2004-05 freshman class.

i think this guy works part time. seriously. marc cherry has done a good job creating this series and writing episodes (according to imdb he’s written only 2 this season) but he is terrible at running this show. every year is the same thing… an intro to something interesting… ignore it for most of the season and wrap it up in the last few episodes. this past week was a great example. a terrific episode written by cherry but it related to a storyline basically ignored for the last 5 months. as a soap it’s horribly arced out. randomness prevails.
I couldn’t have said it better myself. The entire show is a chaotic, random, incoherent mess. The Bolans as characters have become almost as minor as Eddie was before he was revealed as the strangler. It’s like they developed good and compelling plot ideas to hook you into watching, and then decided to devote their time to random crap that most people don’t really care about. They’ve revolved whole episodes around minor characters that have nothing to do with the main plots, and let what is supposed to be the main plots languish in limbo for months at a time. And they are given twenty-two whole episodes to screw it up, while Lost, which is on track plot-wise, is held down to eighteen episodes when it should have been given the standard twenty-two. This year might go down in history as one of the worse in television history.
You’re comment is so unbelievably irritating. Marc has done a remarkable job writing the episodes to Desperate Housewives; he knows just how to add suspense and keep you hooked. I’ve followed this show every Sunday (on-season) for the past 6 years, and have never once been disappointed. I feel as though I’ve actually grown to know the characters personally — which can only come by adding this so called ”random crap that most people don’t really care about”. Those parts are essential to any soap; as is having the main plot unfold at the end, although you’re clearly too impatient to wait for this. Desperate Housewives is known to be a cliff hanger, if you don’t like it, don’t watch an entire series, and then bitch about it online.
As long as Grey’s keeps the newest additions like Kim Raver and the spectacularly hot! Jesse Williams, alongside the strong stable of actors like Sandra Oh, Chandra Wilson, Sara Ramirez, Justin Chambers, Chyler Leigh (damn this group has alot of talent), this show can run for several more years! Every show has its bumps but this one is still very good.
Dial it back. You sound like a publicist.
also add isaac washington back to make the cast completeand i’m sure the rating will go up that’s when it was at it’s high
Honestly I lost interest in those two shows a long time ago, too much drama for the pleasure of drama, they’re closer to soap operas than to good tv shows!
they are soap operas dumbass
2004-05 seriously gave us some good TV
can we go back? please??
I think it’s a good idea, the show has certainly fallen off as of late (we don’t watch any more). Given a solid 2 year commitment, they should be able to sketch out a satisfactory conclusion to the show, while giving everyone involved plenty of warning before they need to move on.
Maybe ABC needs Susan Lyne to come back.
Wow, to say that season was a success for the network would be the understatement of TV history. They were on FIRE!
I see it easier keeping the Housewives cast around than it will be for Grey’s.
Grey’s is done if it keeps boring one note actors like Eric Dane and Kim(show killer)Raver.
The rubbish ratings don’t lie people are not interested in the new bunch and Shonda is a awful show runner and writer. Even Ellen ina recent interview said the actors know the storylines are stupid, over the top and rubbish.
Housewives needs to go back to being a season long mystery rather than these one episode day in the life shows — it becomes like, if you miss it, so what kinda deal.
Grey’s as well needs more story arcs that are as interesting as Izzie’s cancer or Sandra/Isaah’s surgery coverup storyline.
It feels like for both these shows — the writer’s strike is still going on!!!
As a long suffering Grey’s Anatomy fan, even I finally gave up on the series last fall. It’s become abundantly clear the Grey’s team can no longer muster much enthusiasm for the product they put out. The show should end sooner rather than later. An occasional bright spot notwithstanding, Grey’s has been in serious creative decline since season 2. Its saving grace was its cast, who somehow managed to deliver compelling performances despite repetitive and often ridiculous storylines. Unfortunately, with the original actors begging to exit (1 per season on average at this point), and more certain to follow (interestingly, I haven’t heard any rumblings about Dempsey, but have heard Pompeo categorically state she’s moving on when her contract expires after season 8), and the new lackluster characters and mediocre actors brought on to portray them, Grey’s Anatomy has nowhere to go but down.
I still watch Desperate Housewives because I enjoy a good campy soap. The characters are always fun to watch, and bring a lot to their given roles. However the writing could definitely stand to be taken up a few notches, and it’s true – the storylines have become a bit haphazard. Plots have appeared out of nowhere, and some plotlines have been introduced and built up over the course of a few episodes, only to suddenly disappear as if it never even happened. No resolution or explanation provided. I can see where they’ve lost viewers. I’ve continued to watch because I find that there really isn’t that much else that’s good on tv.
Their airing schedule has also really sucked – they’ll air one new episode, only to follow with 3 weeks of re-runs and then by the 4th week, they’ll finally air another new episode, but by this point the viewer’s forgotten where things left off and is confused and detached from the show altogether. I guess if they’re going to be around for another 2 years they should try to clean up their act by writing good stuff that makes sense, and following a more linear airing schedule. That would be nice.
Remember the last time ABC gave a two-year commitment to a long running series? It was “The Drew Carey Show” which promptly tanked in the ratings the following season and left the network with no choice but to dump the second season episodes after the mid-season sweeps. Let’s hope history doesn’t repeat itself.
They need to bring back Isaiah Washington. When he left the pulse of the show did too. Every show needs a antagonist, someone to hate. Bring him back and everyone will tune in.
I totally agree! I stopped watching 2 seasons ago and Washington’s return is the only thing that could possibly bring me back.
To Shonda and the cast and crew of Greys:
I know many hurtful things were said but it’s time to kiss and make up. Seriously.
Looks like the decision to move Monday Night Football to ESPN instead of keeping it on ABC was stupid.
ABC got a few good years out of DH. Now what? Monday Night Football could have run another thirty years.
I love Grey’s Anatomy.it deserves an electrifying end.wouldnt want to see an end to ellen and patrick dempsey’s love play-out though it needs more spice…all in all i think it needs more creative content.
No Patrick Dempsey, no Mer/Der = No show.
Personally, I wouldn’t watch a show about a bunch of doctors and nurses I wouldn’t want anywhere near me if I was sick. That bunch would be too concerned about which one of the others they was going to hop in the sack with at the end of the day to make sure they were operating on the right body part. I agree with what somebody said about Isaiah Washington though. If they brought him back, the ratings would soar through the roof. Of course, if the show itself wasn’t worth a crap, that would only be good for one week.
Desperate Housewives just needs to get back to it’s roots. It was so compelling in it’s first season with non stop twists and seamless character development. I like Cherry’s original idea of turning the clock to back before Mary Alice died. If they truly are going to end it after the 8th season (which they should), then they should use this 7th season to resolve all the character’s stories and then use the eighth to flashback to the old days.
2 more years? Really! Desperate Housewives absolutely should not go on for 2 more years! It should have ended after season 4. That’s when the best of the series really ended. everything after that was completely stupid and predictable. the most entertaining thing that’s happened after season 4 is the car getting blown up on the street. But that’t it! No, the longer they keep it going, the worse it’s going to get. I always knew when season 5 started that it was going to start going downhill.
I think that deperate neads to end in season 8 searusly rene is such a boring character nicollet sheridan was so much better
i love greys anotomy show i hoping theres a season 8
