Here is Ben Silverman’s recent keynote speech at the MIPTV market in Cannes. I’ve watched this video 3 times now and still have no idea what he’s talking about: “Hyper-globalisation is a comment on every moment but clearly adapted in localisation”? “Full circle is where culture really can manifest”? “How do you scale bespoke”?

He makes sense, its just nothing new. Everything he covered was previously said by someone else. Hyperglobalization is like facebook it connects you to everything but you can approach it locally, which is the basic principle of utilizing internet. Full circle is like the Matrix, releasing multiple format to create a world of its own, though i think Avatar will be much more of a success in doing this. As for “Bespoke”, never heard the term before, but i do agree in order to provide a mass service it is highly difficult to transform it to each individual’s need. But this is also a fundamental trouble of economy of scale vs user uniqueness.
All in all good speech but nothing new.
it sounds like he’s talking about the phenomena where ultimately mechanical bespoke gives way to the globalizataion of the localized iterations of cultural manifestations with consumerism replicatabley remodeling itself after the creation of a customized new media platform in a content driven environment.
not sure why you’re confused…?
Wow, he created the Biggest Loser! Wonder if the show was based off himself…
He was nervous…give him a break.
Yeah, yeah, let’s dump on Ben Silverman, happy, happy, joy joy! Don’t know him, not my horse in this race. BUT…He was extremely successful on the world broadcast stage before the bad experiment at NBC, so it’s interesting he’s essentially gone home at MIP. Secondly, look up his reference to Steve Ross who truly made Warner Bros. Records (and all of WEA) successful by being un-corporate. Piqued my curiosity, so I’m gonna wait and see. Then, either applaud or dump on him like everybody else.
Nikki, normally I agree with you, but I think it’s pretty obvious (or perhaps I’m showing my youth?) that Silverman’s speaking about transmedia. Yes, he’s not the world’s greatest public speaker, but he’s doing his best to translate the terms of what has been largely an academic exercise (there’s been some practical examples, but those are dwarfed by the amount of research done on it) into corporate-speak. Honestly, someone has to do this if it’s going to fully break through, so I don’t see the problem with it.
Yes, the terms of the conversation are going to be largely unfamiliar to those who haven’t already been immersed in the academic conversation, but it seems childish to make fun of it.
You can dislike Silverman all you want, but he’s only one of a number of people who are driving the field forward, and poking fun at the language is really poking fun at a number of other highly intelligent and respectable people who really are visionaries.
I’m just saying that it makes you look out of touch.
Whatever! When does Ashton come out to tell the audience they’ve been Punk’d ?
Yeah I have heard a lot of speech jumbled with a lot of tech talk and fluff – clearly he has both in this one.
It never fails to amaze me that I get to keep using my fave phrase when it comes to BS: Ewwwwwwwww…….
A barren superfluity of words.
Has anybody noticed that at roughly 4:20 into the clip he refers to ‘Silicone’ Valley rather than
Silicon Valley? Is there a valley of enormous boobs that Ben is trying to create ‘localisation’ with?
The man is truly the Chauncey Gardner of our times. Except that Chauncey was charming and unassuming, while Silverman is a pompous ass with absolutely nothing of value to offer the world.
We are “looking to…trying to…applying…tapping into…”
Not hearing a lot of concrete stuff here. Oh, wait…
He launched The Office with webisodes.
Does that mean he developed and greenlit the SHOW or he green-lit just the webisodes?
And can anyone actually tie webisodes into the success of the show?
Have ANY of those webisodes gone viral? I can’t remember one.
I certainly remember Lazy Sunday and Dick in a Box going viral, and clips from The Office and 30 Rock *shows*…but not those original webisodes.
In closing…
How do you scale bespoke?
Blurg.
Good thing he ended by saying they should “apply a consciousness” to all that they do.
Got it, good-looking windbag who I have absolutely no doubt benefited from nepotism.
he’s talking about branded entertainment, which may or may not be a good thing.
There are more and more advertisers looking to get involved with the industry and being more involved in creative entertainment. But there really is no standard way to do this yet. He’s basically saying his company will attempt to create the standard.
BUT since the NBC debacle, only time will tell if he succeeds or fails.
That’s odd. Your girlfriend thinks I sound like this in the moments before I fall asleep on Ambien.
I understood every uninformed word – he’s hysterical! Can’t wait to see what monstrosities emerge from electus.
I can’t stop looking at his eyebrows. they seem to have elbows. Look
Truly and utterly nonsensical. Sounds like he spent more time looking at a thesaurus than at his business model.
I am worried because I in fact understand what he is saying while recognizing that he is insane and lost. It’s like talking to myself when I am sh-tfaced!
george bush
I didn’t know Miss South Carolina started a new media company.
BS actually thinks WB Music today is a business model to emulate? Holy crap…do not give this man $.
What’s wrong with you people. You’re so full of yourselves. Listen to what he’s saying, not how he’s saying it.
He’s right.
The only problem is that he’s wrong.
No one is going to control the future of media. He thinks the future is simply going to be a new version of the present. The future of media consumption and monetization (if that even still exists) will be fundamentally different. It won’t be thought up by some smart group of people. That would be too slow to possibly keep up with the pace of change. It will evolve and self organize into something completely different.
Your nose is very tanned, Ben.
How much does he look like Paul Schneider/’Mark Brendanawicz’ on PARKS & REC??? Kind of makes the character harder to like, but Schur, Daniels & Co. do a Great Job. I’m sooo over the digital age (too bad, right?).
