EXCLUSIVE: In a last-minute recasting, Sara Fletcher has been tapped as the female lead on Josh Schwartz’s comedy pilot for CBS Hitched.
Fletcher replaces Smallville alumna Kristin Kreuk, who was originally cast in the role. The switch was made Wednesday, just before the multicamera pilot’s table read. Kreuk starred on two drama series, including her star-making turn on Smallville, and she was wonderful in an arc on Schwartz’s NBC dramedy Chuck this season but she has never done a half-hour sitcom, which requires very particular skills and comedic timing. Ultimately, Hitched proved not a good fit for her. The pilot, which Schwartz co-wrote with Matt Miller, centers on a newlywed couple, Rachel (Fletcher) and Brett (Jack Carpenter), dealing with their family and friends. The cast of Hitched also include comedy veterans Eugene Levy, Kurtwood Smith and Sharon Lawrence as the couple’s parents. Fletcher, who starred on Comedy Central’s My Secret Girlfriend, is with Gersh and Schachter Entertainment.

So, why the switch? Did Kreuk depart voluntarily or was she replaced, because if the latter…yikes!
I’m surprised. I thought Schwartz choosing her for the role after her stint on his Chuck meant they had a good relationship. Do we think CBS intervened?
You don’t bow out of a show right before a table read, you get told that the producers have decided to “go in another direction” with the role…a direction that is not on your iPhone’s Google maps. My guess is that she wasn’t working out (read: not funny) and the network or studio made the decision to switch. Rough day for Kristin, but if she’s got good agents and managers, they’re already massaging their client (read: Xanax) through this.
This actually happens more than is reported, although with all the new media clamoring for scoops I suspect that will change. I predict that once a few more of these stories start popping up that the announcements of who booked what pilot will start to disappear. The actors will do their best to fly under the radar until the pilot is picked up and they’re locked in.
Lisa Kudrow was fired after the table read of FRASIER. She was replaced by Peri Gilpin. Lisa then went to an audition for FRIENDS.
Why is Nikki Finke reporting this. When pilots aren’t working or networks are nervous they replace actors. Happens all the time.
Perhaps kristin kreuk thought she wouldn`t fit and opted out,i know josh really like her, plus she has so many fanbase
Kristin Kreuk is a terrible actress. she was bad on edgemont but she has just gotten worst over the years. she kills shows. she is flat and makes the person speaking to her look insincere.
Kristin was the best thing about Smallville, she’s cute and sexy. That’s something the “bees” of the universe don’t get.
Kristin Kreuk is a great actress
This is Insane, god i`m so pissed that she got replaced.
Don’t worry…Sara Fletcher is awesome. Give her a chance. You might be pleasantly surprised. Plus she’s hot.
EPIC FAIL
Re-cast at the table read? This pilot is Ditched!
Yeah, this is kind of a shit story if you don’t tell us why.
This totally doesn’t surprise me. I always thought it was a little weird that Kristin Kreuk was cast as the lead in a sitcom. She doesn’t seem like she has an ounce of comic timing.
Did you not watch her on Chuck or in Eurotrip?
Kreuk was hilarious (and so was Matt Damon) in Eurotrip. Playing the cheating, trashy ex-girlfriend of “Scotty” (Damon the tattooed, idiotic lead singer).
It is very hard to tell the actual talent of most actresses these days, because roles, and characters for them, are so bad. PC won’t allow most female characters to be funny (or the butt of jokes), its rare that you get female characters with depth and dimension.
I’ve long thought that never have actors been so technically good (even Damon has perfect comic timing) and the writing so lousy.
This is very sad.. I feel bad for her.. Unless of course she didn’t want the part..
Anyways, just wanted to say that, SMALLVILLE is the greatest show ever!
This show just lost millions viewers
Kinda like the millions of viewers who didn’t turn up to watch The Legend of Chun Li? That film only made about $13 mil worldwide and it cost around $60 mil to make (according to some sources). Not much bang for your buck if you ask me!!
Well, those millions could of come from Kristin’s fans. And ppl also go to the movies to see for the story, The Legend of Chun Li has always been kind of on the bad end of the stick. Everybody knew it was going to be bad. Not her fault the writing was horrible.
Gee thanks cbs casting…way to make me uninterested now. Kristin was the only reason to watch for me.
I ONLY interested in this because of KREUK,she`s off,so am i.
Awesome! Sara is hilarious. She was the best thing about secret girlfriend and I think will add a lot to this show.
eeeew Kreuk is so so so so better looking and way more talented than that ugly blonde.
What are you talking about? She has a lot going for her…young smart blonde beauty who can act any role. Have you seen her abilities? Do you know who she is? Obviously not…In 5 years, she is going to get some notice, trust me on that one.
After I heard Kristin was replaced by this blondie, I decided to download some episodes of The Secret Girlfriend or whatever it’s called. I will admit, she was adorable in the show and I understand why they decided to replace Kristin with her.
But sometimes, it takes more than that to make it big or have your names known. I’m sorry, but your theory on the 5 years of her is unlikely. Check out most comedian stars on the shows on CBS, how far do they really go? But I will give it to you that she will of course be more notice with this show from Josh Schwartz and if it’s popular.
So it has begun. Poor Sara Fletcher, strap yourself in. You’re in for a hellish ride.
This seems so out of left field…recasting someone after being cast for 3 months, days before filming and even before doing a table reading. Why did they cast her to begin with if they weren’t even have her get as far as a table reading?
i was thinking the same too, this seems shady.
Hope KK will or Josh will explain this mee soon.
There are close to 100 pilots and there are a TON of actors waiting to get a call. This pilot season is going to be BLOODY. There are a ton of actors unknowingly holding places for yet to be named actors.
This late in the game KK recast has to be a CBS decision.
Ted,
This happens more than you think. A lot of times, networks want a certain actor for a role but deal points become roadblocks or the desired actor is simply unavailable at the moment.
The powers that be will then go with someone else while they wait for their favorite thespian to materialize, then it’s “to the curb” with the artist who thought they had potentially gainful employment.
No Kristin? No thank you.
I have no reason to watch, if the only reason I’d tune in in the first place isn’t going to be involved.
I really think people would have liked to have seen Kristin in a comedy.
Yeah this show is now on Dead on Arrival. A sitcom where the only recognizable actor is Eugene Levey? Yeah so not going to work, the script wasn’t even that good to justify being green-lit.
This sucks.
i WAS LOOKING FORWARD FOR kreuk
Come on this is reads like a Yahoo news article. give us all the info. Or at least make it sound more nasty and include a twist.
CBS SUCKS JOSH SCWHARTZ EVEN SUCKER!
I am very disappointed in this news. I was looking forward to seeing Kristin on TV again. Why did they wait til the last second to make this decision.
What the hell? Kristin Kreuk is adorable! She had comedic timing on Chuck. She was mesmerizing on Smallville. She was the only reason I was interested in this boring-sounding show. I love Smallville, even without her on it, but she was fantastic.
Not a good move. Kristin was the only reason I was even interested in watching the show. I am sure Kristen will find something better
And my interest in this show goes with her…
What the…!?!? And I’ve been really looking forward to this. It would’ve been nice to see Kristin in a show that is light and fun for a change! WHY THE SWITCH??? Thanks a lot CBS.
Kristin is awesome. This show will FAIL without her.
Kristin Kreuk is a shitty actreess, and anyone with eyeballs, ears and a brain would know that if they saw her dreadful acting on Smallville. She’s great too look at, but wow, I think she attended the George Lucas Prequels School of Acting!
How nice to insult and mock Kristin like you did… another example of a bad apple from the Smallville fandom, obviously from the Smalville fandom, since the person mentions Smallville but not any of her other projects.
it’s without saying, her ‘SMALLVILLE STINT’ was her longest and the show that gave her popularity. so of course i’m gonna mention SMALLVILLE, you douche, Just calling a spade a spade. She sucked on Edgemont as well, why? because she played ummm…LANA, she has no range. Just a pretty face. And on ‘Chuck’, again, she played, ‘Lana’, but with the exception of better writing. So Arseless, check yo self before you open the vomit inducing comments you spew.
You’re clearly a bias Smallville fan that can’t see past a fictional character whom you dislike.
Name call all you like, doesn’t change that fact.
Real mature response there….
If you look at the cast of Smallville. Let’s be honest here, who is the one that made the most name for her/his self and did a lot of different things? Mmmm, THAT WOULD BE KRISTIN KREUK! *cough* Dumbass *cough*. Everybody that is still on Smallville has only been doing Smallville and nothing else or they did something 1 or 2 on the side that hasn’t done anything for them to be notice.
Kristin at least went out and tried new things like Eurotrip, Ben-Hur, Street Fighter, Chuck, etc. She dipped her toes in different things. Better than to stay on to a show that should of been finished ages ago and do the same thing over and over and over again with the same character.
This doesn’t really surprise me. CBS or whomever probably balked at the negativity her fanbase would most likely spew at the other cast members. The heinous comments continually posted by Lana fanatics on web articles on Smallville, are a a case in point. In my opinion, her venomous devotees are making her practically unemployable in the acting industry. Which is a shame, since Krisitn Kreuk appears to be a sweet person. It’s her fans that are toxic – much like Smallville’s Allison Mack’s supporters.
^What nonsense is this? Every fandom has a few bad apples in it. You’re an example of one of them. To come here and insult Kristin’s fandom like you just did is proof of that! Shame on you!
I’ve nothing to be ashamed about. Read the toxic comments on the EW and Ausiello sites whenever there are Smallville articles, or any other site, for that matter. It’s the KK ans AM hardcore fans that say the nastiest things, especially about Erica Durance. At least ED’s fans only bash the characters. The virulent KK and AM fans bash ED personally. Totally uncalled for. And totally lacking in class.
Now it makes sense, you’re a fan of an actress that’s not Kristin and Allison and rather owning up the fact that even some of the fans of the person you’re a fan of are also nasty in the things they say about Kristin and Allison Mack, you go and pretend that the only tainted fans are in the Kristin and Allison fandom.
Very noble of you.
I’ve witness your fandom say nasty things about both Kristin and Allison, I’ve personally had to ban people from KristinKreukWeb.com and Lana-clark.net from the very fandom you say aren’t nasty or spiteful because of their trolling the forums/comment sections, for bashing of Kristin and for insulting her fans (like you are at the moment).
You coming here and bring up such nonsense into something that has NOTHING to do with Smallville or the actress you’re a fan of is classless, uncalled for and you’re obviously looking to start trouble.
Again, shame on you.
Granted Allison Mack’s fans first riled up Kreuk fans by calling her “squirrel face” and “horrible actress” for seven years and personally attacking the actress standing in the way of the underdog they were rooting for, instead of limiting it to the character. But, then Kreuk fans fought fire with fire, with relentless attacks on Allison’s weight and homeliness in early seasons, and so forth. By the time Erica showed up, both fandoms were so used to personally attacking the actresses, they both started in on her as an “ugly slut.” Kreuk fans may well view themselves as the victim, instead of the perpetrator, as you seem to. But the result is the same. They are perceived as one of the most poisonous and vicious actress-fandoms on the internet. They are even mentioned in blog articles discussing different fandoms in general. That is how notorious they are. That’s not the kind of press that does any actress good. You reinforce this image of Kreuk’s fans by attacking another poster here because you perceive her as a fan of a different actress. This makes attacks on her or her idol “fair game.” But this is a game none of these actress win and it is a pity their fans don’t get that. Your relentless attacks all over the internet hurt the very person you are trying to help. This is the terrible irony of these actresses’ fandoms.
@ Arelis. Firstly , I only watch Smallville every now and again, so I wouldn’t consider myself a particular fan of Erica Durance, Allison Mack or Kristin Kreuk. I only stuck up for ED because she seems to get most of the vile attacks, especially on the EW websites. Secondly, my initial post simply suggested that CBS probably wouldn’t like all the negativity that Kreuk’s hardcore fans would likely bring on the other cast members for any given reason. I still stand by my comment. CBS is a major network and doesn’t need to court controversy, unlike The CW. The CW is a tiny network with tiny ratings, so they’d welcome anything that generates a ‘buzz’. Even the hate campaigns generated by mainly Kreuk’s and Mack’s fans against Durance – simply because she plays Lois Lane who ends up with Clark Kent on Smallville. And thirdly, get off your high horse, since you are the one with an agenda, if you work on KK’s fan sites.
@ sadness. Thanks for your post. It certainly helps to explain why ED seems to be getting the brunt of the viciousness lately. I would imagine that Allison Mack, Kristin Kreuk and Erica Durance are all suitably appalled by some of their fans’ horrible behavior.
Kim, you’re the one that has an agenda. You’re the one that decided to come here and bring up something that happened on ANOTHER site that I personally never took part in and I can bet most Kristin fans didn’t either. Since most of us DON’T follow Smallville anymore and haven’t since Kristin left!
So STOP generalizing ALL Kristin fans, because of a few bad apples! And what HATE campaign have Kristin fans done towards Erica?!
Do you have references, links to these campaigns? Are they found on KristinKreukWeb.com? Or any other Kristin Kreuk fansite?!
If you have no references besides a EW article which the ones I looked up have bashing coming from EVERY fandom, then you’re just spreading around a lot nonsense just to start trouble!
Now excuse me while I get back on my high horse, I like the view up here!
Kim I take it your a Erica Durance fan who is sick of the bashing she gets. But by the same token I have read hundreds of comments by Clois and Durance fans bashing Kreuk over the years and saying personal things about her body and looks and not just the character she played.
The reality is, that the Smallville fanbase is the worst combination of online fans you can get (young girls who watch the CW and geeks who are into the Superman lore) of course you get immature comments.
But it serves to notice, Kristin gets the worst comments, and usually her fan base is pretty tame compared to the vitriol of the other Smallville fanbase (who I recall even use to bash Brandon Routh when he had the Superman movie role nabbed. I guess cause they thought Tom was Superman).
So while Im sure some take shots at other actors, it is nothing compared to the vitrol she gets specfically. So I think you may have it the other way around with all due respect to you.
You feel yourself the victim. And Allison Mack’s fans feel themselves the victim. And Erica Durance’s fans feel themselves the victim. Which makes it ok in your minds to viciously attack each other all over the internet. When you each take responsibility for being the instigator and bully, maturity will begin. Saying, “we’re at fault, but they are more at fault” just continues the cycle. Stop attacking competing actresses personally and healing will begin. What sane production would want to employ any of these actress, with the reputation their fans have?
@ Chris. I’m simply tired of the actress-bashing that seems to happen EVERYTIME there’s a Smallville article. I used ED as an example, because that’s who I see gets bashed the most viciously on the EW websites (where I frequent the most).
@ RoundAndRound. ITA. Who needs all that vitriol? CBS certainly doesn’t!
Look around Kim and the others, people are bashing Kristin in this comment section!
Or are you guys choosing to ignore that and continue your belittling of Kristin’s fandom with your nonsense?
@ Kim
So are we gonna do a competition to see who gets bashed worse? lol
Come on I already explain to you, that Smallville has a nutty fanbase. What you’re experience right now with Erica Durance on ONE website, is what Kristin Kreuk fans had to endure for years on several. Are you saying its hundreds of Kreuk fans on one website bashing durance, or is it a general amount (who could be chloe fans) bashing ED?
Its misguided to think that is the reason she gets bashed, or that is the reason Kreuk got dropped. Internet fandom is crazy (Just ask Joss Whedon or JJ Abrhams) but it does nor should it be a stigma held for or against any actor.
Random to complain about an actor’s fanbase and use it as an excuse for why an actor doesn’t get a part. Even more random to drop in another actor’s fanbase into the complaint. Some actors have stalkers and no one says “I’m not going to hire her. She has a stalker, and I don’t want to deal with that mess.”
I tend to avoid Kristin’s projects since I’m not a fan of her acting. I haven’t seen her do comedy well, but maybe she could have or maybe CBS and co. wanted a sure bet rather than a maybe.
Mindy, I would give her stint on Chuck a look. As breif as the run was, she did mesh really well with Zachary Levi (particularly in her first and third episodes) and it really kinda showed that she does have potential to play a more upbeat character to the ones she’s been bogged down playing throughout her career.
The CBS role would have at least shown some of that, but here’s hoping she gets something this pilot season (Similar to Alysonn Hannigan in 2005, switching sitcoms) because she really is one of those actress who can develop herself with a good role as opposed to a redundant one like the one on Smallville.
Sadly, I think you are right Kim. Allison Mack’s supporters, in particular, are venomous. They spill pure poisonous bile all over the internet on the actors who work with Allison. Kristin’s fans are guilty of this too. It is so ironic, because these two actresses seem really sweet, and they love their cast mates, but their fans are toxic. How can two such nice girls attract the most vicious fans on the internet? It makes no sense.
Would be fair of me to say that Erica Durance’s fans like to spill pure poisonous nonsense over the internet about why other actresses don’t get roles or about their fandoms, because of you and Kim?
yeah i always thought it was odd Kreuk was cast in the first place. probably was an offer that sounded good on paper, name value and diversity, but the script for hitched definitely calls for someone with comedic timing, which Fletcher demonstrated from being on that awful show Secret Girlfriends, where she was somewhat redeeming. Either way though I think this pilot is doomed. i don’t think anyone wants to watch either of the two girls….and who is Jack Carpenter? doomed i say. toldja!
