EXCLUSIVE: Spike TV has greenlighted Kings By Nights, a comedy presentation from FremantleMedia. The project, about three guys who start a casino in their office at night, was written by Ben and Dan Newmark. The two brothers got their break four years ago when they wrote a dramedy spec script, Wilton, and shot it as a do-it-yourself pilot starring their friends. The footage eventually got them a script deal at the CW. Richie Keen will direct the Kings By Nights presentation, which will film in June. Spike also recently greenlighted the comedy pilot Playing With Guns starring Danny Masterson and Joey Kern.

What is a “DIY pilot”?
a pilot independently financed. Similar to writing a script on spec/
“DIY” = Do It Yourself.
Means the guys who wrote the idea decided just to shoot a pilot on their own without a network or studio backing it financially or creatively.
Although, sometimes, if you do have network interest but they won’t pay for a pilot, they will still be involved creatively to taylor to their tone/style so they can try to sell it upwards.
FINALLY! Spike has good concept for a comedy! Hope this one gets on the air!
Funnier the first time with Michael Keaton with escort service out of the morgue on the night shift.
Spike should just revive Sledge Hammer, the ultimate man’s comedy.
Concept sounds ok … It’s usually execution that is their problem
Do – It – Yourself
This sounds like a pretty original idea, I’d be very curious to see this show if it gets picked up.
Blue Mountain State is far and away the funniest show on television for guys. This sounds like a potential good companion..
Congrats to the Newmark Bros. Great guys with a ton of talent. Well deserved.
No, Steve. It is not.
I think it sounds hilarious and the Newmark Brothers and everyone involved should be super confidant it goes to series!
