It was billed as the “can’t miss episode of Glee” this season, but the conclusion of the much-hyped Madonna episode went MIA for DVR owners. Because of an American Idol overrun Tuesday night, many viewers watching Glee on DVR saw the show cut off before the climax, the cast’s performance of Like a Prayer featuring a large gospel choir. Viewers grumbled last year about Idol overruns that cut short recording of the shows that followed the singing competition but nothing compares to the interruption of Fox’s most-promoted scripted hour this season, written and directed by Ryan Murphy no less. Glee fans took to Twitter to voice their anger and frustration. A fan site, gleetastic.com, was quick to get the Like a Prayer video up, while the official Fox Web site only offered promos for the episode as well as the Sue Sylvester Vogue music video.
UPDATE WEDNESDAY AM: The Madonna episode of Glee is now available on fox.com and hulu.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

DVR?? TiVo. i got dvr and i got the whole episode.
Ryan mentioned Wednesdays show would probably go long, so set DVR accordingly.
How on Earth would that help, when most people use DVRs as a “set it and forget it” device!
Wouldn’t help me either b/c I don’t watch idol.
omg not glee the most fantastical show ever bumped by the equally can’t miss idol, i don’t know what i will do now, “brainfart” i will react the missing scene with my barbie and ken doll while my cat sings out a tune. But let me say this is an outage, 10x worse than when Fox bumped Obama in prime time
Oh boo-hoo.
Try dealing with free tv in Australia – constantly beginning programs late (main shows scheduled for 7.30pm start around 7.36pm throwing the whole nights’ schedule out the window).
Most 8.30 programs start around 8.42 and the 9.30 shows start around 9.49.
All because TV executives think if they hold the show back a bit, the viewers won’t go to another show on another network that may have already started.
It’s bloody ridiculous… even allowing for the extra 20 minutes PVR’s offer here sometimes we’ve missed shows.
And they wonder why we all download……
I wouldn’t be surprised to find that wizened, liverspot-stained Australian hand behind this. We all know the evil gnome of Fox hates DVRs because people zoom right through his commercials…..
Anyone with a brain who owns a DVR knows when to add a few minutes to the end of their recording when there is a live broadcast before it.
Disagree. I don’t add time because of the domino effect if I’m recording other shows. What happens when the show runs long? I actually give up on that show. If the network has no respect for me, why should I?
Great in concept, but that’s assuming that everyone programming a DVR KNOWS there’s a live show before it. When Glee started in the fall, it was on Wednesdays and DIDN’T follow a live show. I set a season pass so I could forget about it.
Cut to present day: Glee now follows a live Idol. My season pass follows the show’s move to Tuesday so I don’t have to think about it… I didn’t, and the show cut off (when I had a bunch of guests over to watch it, no less).
Long story short: people don’t consume their content in the same way they used to, and it’s only gonna change more drastically in the next few years.
Oh, and when Idol is actually trimming contestants from week to week (ostensibly TRIMMING the actual amount of content they have to fill one of their TWO hours of primetime a week, there’s no reason the show shouldn’t come in on time).
I find it unfair that the producers of Idol edited Crystal’s performance for a better ending. The public is supposed to be watching and voting on a live show, not edited bits.
If you watched the show last night, Crystal was noticeably upset at the end of her song due to her father being in the audience. In fact, she was unable to finish the song and even mumbled, ‘sorry.’ But then at the end when Ryan recaps the show, suddenly Crystal is no longer crying, and she finishes the number on a great note. I assume the footage was looped in from an earlier rehearsal.
I noticed this only because I was DVR-ing Glee which came on right after Idol, so I was able to piece together the entire broadcast from two recordings.
I don’t know the rules of Idol, but if you’re going to say that your broadcast is live, then it should be live and not edited together from bits of “better” performances that were filmed earlier. It fools the public and provides an unfair advantage to certain contestants.
The footage at the end is from the dress rehearsal and always has been since Idol has been on there air; it is an editing/time issue and has nothing to do with favoring a contestant. Stop being paranoid.
You can see it all on Hulu – http://www.hulu.com!
(This is not an ad, I do not work for them!)
Can we all get a grip? One would think that after nine seasons anyone watching Fox shows would expect Idol to run along. Especially when scaled down to one hour with seven contestants. Stop complaining. Add 15 minutes to your DVR.
Shame. We saw it all in my household. But then we also saw the commercials that made the show possible.
It’s on hulu.com for cryin’ out loud!! Anyone who misses it on their DVR can just watch it there!
Stop time shifting your shows and you won’t have this problem.
yes, it’s the viewers’ faults that Idol’s producers don’t know how to use a stopwatch.
What most likely happened here is that some stations aren’t transmiting compliant PSIP (which Tivo uses to determine the end of programs) in that the “duration” of the Idol episode was (again) out of sync with the actual program. And, some stations did transmit the program’s actual duration, permitting viewers to capture the entire episode.
The FCC has responded previously to such complaints by explicitly telling stations they have to transmit the ACTUAL duration of programs. In previous seasons, Tivoers even missed knowing who had won (or seeing the final minutes) of an Idol finale that overran.
My PSIP generator (when used with TitanTv.com’s Master Control Utility) can solve this issue; station staff just needs to be alert to make the appropriate changes.

Two alleycats were mating so I listened to that instead of Idol. The cats hit their notes.
lol, can’t imagine sitting through that slop either.
As for DVR’s and late programming, some on-air personality (that I can’t recall) recently said “The thing Americans fear most is inconvenience”. So true.
Mich, the reason Crystal wasn’t crying in the recap is because they film those at the dress rehearsals. They have done this for years. So, if they break up during the actual performance it will never be on the recap! Crystal’s performance last night was live and spontaneous.
Yes, I went to Fox.com and saw what my DVR missed. But, honestly, get it together IDOL. You do this every week (not once a year like Oscar or Emmy) and it’s pathetic that you can’t get your show to time. You’re supposed to be professionals.
And, no, it wasn’t the end of the world to just go seek out the GLEE ending elsewhere, but just a nuisance. And, yes, I’ve adjusted my Tivo to run late on GLEE so this doesn’t happen again. But, to assume that I should automatically know that GLEE is running post-IDOL and make adjustments is a bit over the top. I can’t be that aware of the whole schedule — or I guess I choose not to be aware of the whole schedule, so it’s my bad, but who can be bothered to look at everything prior so you can make sure that your settings are just so.
And what if I was recording something at 10 and then if I run late with GLEE at 9, I end up with a conflict at 10 since GLEE is spilling over to 10:05? Then what? I’m screwed out of my 10:00 p.m. show since IDOL fucks with my 9:00 p.m. show?
The problem is with IDOL and its production team who ought to be better and to know better.
Martin,
You forgot to mention that while watching those commercials, you noticed how the cool, refreshing .iller Genuine Draft you were drinking paired perfectly with the smooth aroma of Winston lights.
Now wink at the camera.
Good job.
You’d think a professional production team would be able to get an hour-long live television show out on time. There’s no reason in the world for IDOL to go long. Fox execs need to put their foot down.
“Adding a few more minutes” to TiVo is not always an option. There are those of us who actually like the shows coming on at 10pm and have our TiVos set to record them. With “V” and “Parenthood” running on ABC and NBC, respectively, at 10pm, my TiVo doesn’t have the capability to stay on Fox for a few extra minutes to satisfy the “Idol” ego.
That’s great that Ryan mentioned that last night’s show might run long, but those of us who don’t watch “Idol” wouldn’t have seen that.
“Adding a few more minutes to TiVo” is not an option for all of us, since there are actually other shows on at 10pm that some people enjoy watching. With my TiVo only able to record 2 shows at once and “V” and “Parenthood” running on ABC and NBC, respectively, at 10pm, I don’t have the capability to keep recording Fox for a few extra minutes simply to satisfy the “Idol” ego. (And no, AT&T U-Verse is not available in my area, so I can’t record 4 shows at once.)
And that’s great that Ryan mentioned the show might run long, but for those of us who actually don’t watch “Idol,” that doesn’t help.
It’s sad that the biggest show on television has the worst production values out there. Have you actually seen an episode? There are awkward silences, weird rantings and a million other issues. Idol should get it together. If they are supposed to be done by a certain time, be done by that time. It’s only professional. Also, if you know you’re running late, speed up the judging process and maybe do shorter clips of all of the contestants. I don’t watch Idol anymore, but I do watch Glee. I am mad becuase I have 2 shows recording at 9 PM. (Glee airs at 8 where I live.) I can’t let Glee record an extra “10 mintues”…so I’m SOL. I just think it’s poor planning on Idol’s part.
REALLY!!!! what are you all 11 year old girls… shouldn’t be complaining about FOX, IDOL and GLEE, you should be examining your lives!!!
examine your own fucking life douche bag. you obviously found this interesting enough to read all the way down to the end. it became a story about production and professionalism and tv watching habits in a digital age. everyone could go watch IDOL or GLEE on line and we all know it.
To those of you mocking AI & Glee: Why are you even wasting time commenting??
To Fox: Run your network like a network. Schedule your shows accordingly and have them run on time. It’s not that hard – even with a live show like AI.
To Nellie: As of 7AM EDT, Glee was available on Fox.com
I missed the end of Glee (DVR) and of course I was mad. Sure, I watched it on HULU right after, but it’s still a big frustrating.
And for everyone that says “you should know that Idol runs over sometimes,” why should I know that? It sounds like everyone assumes that all fans of Glee are fans of Idol. Not so. I don’t watch Idol so how am to know that it’s going to run late?
I doubt many people regularly monitor what’s happening on the show that runs before the one they’re interested in watching. For example, how many of you track what’s happening on the show before Idol? What if it ran late and then you missed the end of Idol and didn’t get to see who got the boot?
Oh dear God, does anyone still think this is an accident? I’ve been in half a dozen development meetings with Mike Darnell over the past two years, and his only mantra is “How do we get them to watch it live? How do we get them to watch it live?” All the networks are being KILLED by DVRs, so they are playing little tricks to kill the DVRs in return.
Surprise surprise, the most hyped moment of the most hyped episode of the year on Fox gets cut off, but only for people who aren’t watching it live. Congrats, you just got spanked for your bad behavior. Now, get it right next week, like good little consumers, and watch it when we give it to you.
Eat my Shorts. I never watch TV live except the news. I have a Life.
