EXCLUSIVE: Jamie Tarses is staying at Sony Pictures Television with a new two-year
overall deal. Tarses is among the studio’s most prolific non-writing producers. She exec prods two Sony series, TBS’ My Boys and TNT’s Hawthorne as well as four buzzed-about comedy pilots this development season, Mr. Sunshine and Happy Endings at ABC, True Love at CBS, and Franklin & Bash at TBS.
At one time one of the most controversial network executives in entertainment history, first at NBC and then at ABC, Tarses came to Sony in 2005 when she joined Gavin Polone at his Sony-based Pariah. After fielding a few projects, including My Boys, the two parted ways at the end of 2006 when WME-repped Tarses launched her company Fan Fare and inked an overall deal with Sony.

Yay! Let me say it again…Yay! Another non-writing Executive Producer who chews away big money from the budget meaning fewer writers.
Yeah, one less writer in the writers room adding another voice in an already crowded, unproductive environment.
With all due respect, (don’t you love how people say that before they blast you?) the non-writing producer is just what the business needs. Before the FinSyn rules where killed by that fascist gasbag Ronald Reagan, these entities were responsible for the Golden Age of TV. The NWP’s kept the studios honest and protected the quality of the show. Norman Lear, MTM, Desilu, Witt Thomas Bochco to name a few. Now we have executives pitching show ideas, frightened and weak showrunners and rampant hackism.
Jamie is a smart and dynamic person. One of the few people who actually lives up to the hype because she is truly talented as is her brother and her dad. So shoot your venom elsewhere.
Jamie’s a gem.
Um, excuse me: exactly how many of these hypothetical writers – not ONE of whom would be you in any case, I can safely venture – do you suppose would be employed withOUT the efforts of producers/EPs making deals and getting shows developed, shot and on the air in the first place? I’m not sure what post YOU just read, but between the two series Ms. Tarses has on the air now as well as the FOUR pilots in contention for pickup, it seems as if she’s DIRECTLY responsible for the employment of more than her share of both above and below-the-liners this season.
Kudos to anyone who is actually DOING something productive in the marketplace.
Here here! I’m one of the many people employed as a result of the work Ms. Tarses does. I can honestly say I’ve never met anyone who works harder. Trust me, she earns her paycheck. There are literally hundreds of people like me who have jobs on her various projects. We are all grateful for her efforts and will likely have jobs in the future now that her contract has been renewed. Brendan is 100% right.
Actually… before the days of former execs being given all the overall deals at studios so that there are hardly any left for writers (you know, the actual creators of a show), there were MORE shows on television. With fewer networks, I would add.
Jamie is pretty good, but the argument stands: overall deals for non-writing producers is welfare for failed executives.
BRANDO!
I sure hope this means they are happy withTrue Love and it goes.
She’s a big talent when it comes to developing new shows. Smart move.
Hasn’t “My Boys” been cancelled?
I sure haven’t heard a peep about it since the last episodes were run in the summer of 2009.
It’s good to know that in this era of tightening budgets, Sony is investing in someone with no discernible talent.
Jamie is really sweet when she wants something but will turn on you once she gets it. Not a nice person – you would think her very public firing would have made her give some thought as to how she treats people. Just ask Gavin Palone.
Gavin Polone would know better than anyone. It takes a self-important assholic jerk to know one.
You called it right Brendan – I personally am getting tired of all the people who put a period at the end of a sentence and get a Producer credit — check out the credits of “The Dick Van Dyke Show” One or two writers, one producer, one exec producer. How did they ever get that show done? Too bad it was such a failure. I would challenge most hyphenates to produce a 30 sec. commercial and doubt it could be successful. Granted without the written word, compelling story arc and vivid characters we would have nothing but the words. They would just sit on the page without the efforts of the Jamie Tarses’ of the industry. I have had the pleasure of working around Ms. T over the last 5 yrs and can tell you no one works harder or sells better.
PS MY BOYS just finished another 9 episode order
And it doesn’t hurt that she comes from “royalty” (Jay Tarses). Oops, guess that doesn’t apply to Ben Mankiewicz!
Jamie is a smart lady with the best butt in the biz.
I thinks this is great news. Someone else to help cook the vitamins out. They’re indispensable, these people. Imagine how entertaining and surprising television would be without them. You couldn’t use it for advertising purposes.
As for her butt, why don’t you put your tongue up it. You probably already have.
TV is free unless you pay for it like HBO. Free because it is used for “advertising purposes.” Without “these people” like Ms. Tarses, free TV would be Jersey Shore ALL THE TIME. Her development deals actually lead to scripted shows, as in more than one. Writers get work because of her hard work. Shut up and read poetry, fancy pants, it’s only TV. It would suck a whole lot more without Jaime.
I think many people are overlooking the fact that she’s actually *giving* jobs to writers by having the ability to get shows GREENLIT. If you know her, it’s hard to deny her incredible instincts. Congrats, Jamie!
