Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Chris Meloni has spent his own money to option Legends of A Suicide, a collection of five short stories and a novella by David Vann that focus on the tough relationship between a boy and his Alaskan father, leading up to the latter’s suicide. Meloni plans to mount the book as a feature film which he will direct and star in. He will also write the first draft, and produce through his Yo DC Boy Productions banner.
Meloni recently co-directed, co-wrote and starred in National Lampoon’s Dirty Movie, a comedy that is looking for distribution. Vann’s book couldn’t be more different. Meloni, no stranger to dark material in the HBO series Oz and the Law & Order spinoff, sparked to the edgy prose penned by Vann, who previously wrote A Mile Down. Legends Of A Suicide was published earlier this month by Harper Perennial to glowing reviews.
“The guy’s writing just seduced me,” Meloni told me this afternoon, in between scenes shot in lower Manhattan. The NBC series, in its 11th season, is enjoying its best ratings ever, he said, since new episodes moved to the Wednesday 10 PM time-slot vacated by Jay Leno. “I’ve yet to figure out whether all the stories can be molded into what I see as a beautifully written, intimate portrait of a father and son struggling to communicate, in a relationship that never forms a real foundation. It is a story with no easy answers, and a very poetic ending. I was drawn to the no-easy-answers part of it. It’s a little like `A Serious Man’ in that regard, in that many people can see it and walk away with a different interpretation of what it actually meant. Vann’s writing is stark, beautiful and intimate, and to put it in that great outdoors landscape, the water, the fishing, there are contrasting elements and images that just struck me.”
Meloni’s Gersh reps closed the book deal this week with Vann’s reps at Inkwell Management. Meloni, hopes the project will serve as a potential next career step.
“I’ve been on an active search to find projects that can help me transition if and when the `Law & Order’ gig should end, not that I’m making a prediction on that,” Meloni said. “I want to figure out stuff for life after this show. This came about after I went to publishers and told them I was interested in finding material to put my stamp on and bring to the screen. One of the books had me written all over it, until I was told Robert De Niro had it. And then this one came along.”

boring. I’d rather see an “Oz” feature film and so would most people.
Ummm…guys, he died on the series finale of Oz. So did most of the key characters. You couldn’t make an Oz movie if you wanted to. Unless you bring in a bunch of characters that nobody cares about.
Who says a Oz movie would have to take place after the final episode? It could take place anytime in the shows timeline. They could even have it be set the shows universe but not be canon (think of movies like The Brady Bunch Movie, which was set in the Brady Bunch universe but not canon).
It’s about time Meloni is spreading his wings elsewhere. I must admit I do not want to see him leave SVU, but, I believe the guy has serious range and can deliver when quality material is presented. Can’t wait.
“Legends Of A Suicide was published earlier this month by Harper Perennial to glowing reviews.” – I’d be pretty bullish on a picture based on this work.
Regarding the Law & Order gig ending, not likely happening anytime soon. SVU has plenty of legs. It would have to be a voluntary departure. Just my estimate.
Meloni reminds me of a high school Gym teacher. Pass
Randy: No offense, but “most people” have never seen “Oz” — it was a pay-cable show, remember? We’re not talking about an HBO series that had a long after life in other venues like “Sex and the City.”
Joe Leyden – no offense taken. I realize now that on this planet of 6 billion, most people have not seen “Oz”.
I meant most people who are likely to see a Chris Melloni film. His character on “Oz” was real.
With his SVU gig not anding any time soon, he has plenty of money to work on passion projects
* ending
((“I’ve been on an active search to find projects that can help me transition if and when the `Law & Order’ gig should end, not that I’m making a prediction on that,” Meloni said.))
Hmmmm! He sounds like he is REALLY desperate to get out of SVU as fast as he can, which would be the best thing for him at this stage! That show is a sinking ship anyway. It would be a wise choice to jump out of it as soon as possible. I dunno but all these articles about him possibly leaving the show at the end of the running season, and the “yes he’s leaving, no he’s not” back and forth game the SVU runners are doing on the internet are confusing. I remember reading he wasn’t happy about the direction his character was taking, something like that… Anyway, I wish him the best with his new project, really.
Um, no. It is clear that he just wants to make sure he has projects lined up in-case the show ends. SVU continues to get great ratings and great reviews, the show won’t end unless the producers decide to.
“SVU continues to get great ratings and great reviews”
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah! Oh man, are you serious? You mean the GREAT reviews from twitter? From the bunch of teeny boppers there? LOL! You do realize that SVU is getting its butt kicked by Criminal Minds, CSI:NY, Modern Family, American Idol and EVEN Ugly Betty’s repeats, right? It even got beat up by GLEE and Cougar Town for crying out loud, before they moved it back to its original 10pm timeslot! There will be NO new SVU on April 14th, they’re going with repeats. Know why? NBC is likely going with repeats that night because NBC knows it is facing a considerable competition since CBS will have new episodes in both Criminal Minds and CIS:NY.
Oz was an amazing show and Chris’s portrayal of Keller was nothing short of brilliant, but I don’t think an Oz film is realsitic as Tom Fontana has killed practically everyone onscreen already. He said he ended the show because he ran out of ways to do it. Joe, I did not see Oz at the time but like many fans of Chris’s acting on SVU have gone out of my way to see it and purchase on DVD. I have even more respect for his abilities as an actor as a result.
I enjoy SVU but the storylines do not allow him to flourish frequently in the few most recent series. He has said that he will leave when his contract ends next year and I would be more inclined to beleive what he is reported to have said than denials from Neal Baer who doesn’t appear to appreciate Chris’s talent anyway (just my opinion obviously).
SVU is not a 9 o’clock show and its ratings have been very good since it moved back to its normal timeslot. Reviews I have seen have been pretty good too.
Regardless of his longevity on the show, I am very glad that he is taking the chance to do things that he is passionate about as he has been restricted to mostly small roles while doing SVU. He has very good range and I love his comedy but I look forward to see him directing a dramatic piece so that his passion for his work can really shine through.
SVU wasn’t doing so hot because 10 of it’s seasons were on Tuesdays at 10 PM. So because of the confusion of not only moving to Wednesdays, but also at 9 PM it lost some of it’s regular viewers. That being said SVU’s ratings are already being brought back up now that it is back at the regular time. They don’t call it Primetime for nothing. Long live SVU and the Sexy Chris Meloni!
OMG!! CHRISTOPHER MELONI IS LIKE THE BEST IN THE WORLD AND CHRIS KELLER WAS AWESOME IN OZ. ELLIOT STABLER IS LIKE THE BEST DETECTIVE THERE IS ON T.V. SERIOUSLY. EVERYTHING IS PERFECT ABOUT HIS CHARACTER AND IF HE WERE TO LEAVE SVU THAT SHOW WOULD BE DONE!! CHRISTOPHER MELONI IS SEXY AND AWESOME! I LOVE YOU ELLIOT STABLER!!
i think he shound go for it,every days that pass the you dont know if its going to be there tommorre .days are number ,nothing is forever christopher!!
