EXCLUSIVE: The actress is to star in a new version of Romeo and Juliet due to begin filming on location in Italy on October 4. This Shakespeare adaptation is being aimed squarely at the Twilight audience. Oscar-winning British screenwriter Julian Fellowes tells me, “Before Twilight there was Romeo and Juliet.” Collins is already playing Taylor Lautner’s love interest in John Singleton’s Abduction, so Romeo and Juliet looks like cementing the Twilight nexus.
Fellowes says he wanted to write this new version because the Twilight phenomenon shows teenagers are hungry for more romance. “This generation hasn’t had its own Romeo and Juliet,” he tells me. “My generation had the Franco Zeffirelli version, while John Gielgud was Romeo for my parents’ generation. For me, Romeo and Juliet is the iconic love story.”
Gabriele Muccino, director of The Pursuit of Happyness and Seven Pounds, is producing through his Milan-based Indiana, alongside Ileen Maisel and Mark Ordesky’s London- and LA-based Amber Entertainment. Italian director Carlo Carlei (The Flight of the Innocent) is setting the $12 million film in the Renaissance Verona of Shakespeare’s original. The producers are still searching for an actor to play Romeo. Wherefore art thou Romeo, indeed.
Fellowes, who’s in the middle of shooting TV drama Downton Abbey for ITV, wrote the original screenplay for the new Johnny Depp/Angelina Jolie thriller The Tourist, shooting in Venice. “We want to tell Romeo and Juliet as clearly as we can, paring down Shakespeare’s language,” he says.

ICK! How about hiring someone who can act the play? Or does that matter in this post-Twilight market. As long as Romeo can do a thousand crunches, who cares if he is trained…
She’s lovely. But, umm…did someone forget to tell Julian about Baz Luhrman’s 90′s version?
Tim, thanks for the news, but I wanna correct one thing. ‘Wherefore’ means ‘why’ not ‘where.’ When Juliet complains ‘Wherefore art thou Romeo?’ she’s not looking for him, she’s lamenting that her future lover is a forbidden person, a Montague.
I guess nobody cares about the Romeo and Juliet of MY generation; the Baz Luhrmann version.
So how is this one going to be different?
Well, Julian Fellowes doesn’t but when I was in 7th grade that was THE soundtrack to have and the movie most likely to be playing at parties.
“We want to tell Romeo and Juliet as clearly as we can, paring down Shakespeare’s language,” he says.
Sounds god awful.
Um. Did we forget about the Baz Luhrmann version? My 14-year-old daughter has watched that one multiple times … OTOH, I always applaud more productions of Shakespeare.
sounds gud
Oh, my… do we really need another Romeo & Juliet?? I think the Dicaprio one holds up pretty well still… guess people these days forget too soon, especially if we’re redoing things like “Spiderman” already! I say go with an unknown for this if you have to…. go to italy to find the guy… forget the u.k. & please not sam worthington who’s in every film these days.
I saw a trailer a poster here recomended on whatisyourrevenge.com that guy might be a good romeo… or maybe they’ll just end up finding him in one of the supporting twilight players! Why not just cater directly to them!
I think its success will be closer to Tristan + Isolde than Twilight.
“the original screenplay for the new Johnny Depp/Angelina Jolie thriller The Tourist”
Isn’t The Tourist an adaptation of the french film “Anthony Zimmer” ?
That’s Fellows talent, for taking credit. He was brought in to do re-writes on a brilliant adaptation of Vanity Fair by Mark Skeet and Matthew Faulk, and completely mucked it up, but lent the impression he’d brought it all to the fore in the first place. Hilarious that he forgot Baz’s “R + J.” And yes, scary that he’s excited to “pare down” the Bard. Please…
“So how is this one going to be different?”
Considering it’s going to be marketed to the Twilight tween fangirls, I am guessing more dumbed down, irrationally melodramatic and stupid. Anyone want to place bets on Romeo + Juliet not dying and instead overcoming the odds to live happily ever after?
No, they need to die… So they can awaken as vampires for the sequels. It’s all about franchise.
Goodlord you hit the nail on the head with that remark! I still cant stop laughing…
The differences is:
Romeo is a vampire and Paris the Werewolf. Blah blah blah…they 3 ended doing the Ménage à trois and everybody lived, happy ever after
Is the Baz Lurhman R+J not the “Twilight” version already? Why on EARTH do we need ANOTHER Romeo & Juliet?
But Seriously, who is really playing Juliet?
I agree w/ a lot of these comments…Baz’s version is still timeless, and apart of this generation already. The only result I can forsee regarding a new version is that it does exactly that…”Twilight”‘s the movie…totally botching the story and making it a cheesy, underacted, somehow CGI ridden, nonetheless beautifully shot movie with pretty actors. I really hope this movie does not get greenlit.
‘Paring down Shakespeare’s language.’ Pfft.
“Wherefore art thou Romeo, indeed.” Get thee to an English teacher, Tim. Not only is your punctuation poor, so is your translation. “Wherefore” does not mean WHERE; it means WHY. In other words, “Why are you Romeo?” He is a Montague, and Juliet is wondering why, of all people, she had to fall in love with the son of her family’s greatest enemy.
“wherefore art thou romeo” means “WHY are you romeo”, not “where are you romeo.” illiterate.
Better made it in 3-D or it doesn’t have a shot –
(how great would Zeffirelli’s be in 3-D – esp the scene when Olivia Hussey emerged from bed!!!)
Sure, R&J is the iconic love story, but “making it for the Twilight generation” is a crime. Why don’t we teach them to read the original story instead of murder it with a new “post Twilight” version?
Dracula is the iconic vampire story, and the Twilight saga transformed the all mighty ceature of the night into a sort of metrosexual thing that can’t be exposed to sunlight cause he sparks like if he has shiny girl’s make up on.
I guess is because is easier to steal a classic idea instead of creating something new. That’s why every XMas we have a new version of Scrooge’s story… even one voiced by Jim Carrey!
Maybe Romeo will become a transformer now to keep him updated, who knows…
“Wherefore art thou, Romeo, indeed.”
Wherefore doesn’t mean “where.” It means “why.”
Juliet wasn’t asking Romeo where he was, she was asking him why he had to be a Montague and therefore an enemy.
I’d like to see a real version of Romeo and Juliet filmed with modern day technology and real actors. God where have the Jack Nicholsons and Susan Sarandons of the world gone. Now we have people who call themselves actors but forgot about the acting part.
wherefore art thou so dumb that thou doest
not know the difference of where and why?
(check it out, I answered in iambic pentameter)
Now another Collins is going to be a big star!! Wowee!!
Is this based on a graphic novel or something? Will it be shot in 3D or converted in post?
Holy shitte…how far has Julian Fellowes fallen into the gutter, to think Romeo & Juliet isn’t untouchable terrain when Baz Luhrmann’s iconic adaptation is still a favorite with all-age audiences. And the project’s funded by a company whose films released straight into Tesco stores (u.k.’s version of 7-11!). Fellowes lost all credibility when he switched agencies to sign with the Biggest ponce in town, Jeremy Barber. He would’ve been better off in a Rendition program.
Just make the ‘tweens watch ‘Shakespeare in Love’.
It’s highly entertaining and surprisingly educational.
They will probably learn more about Shakespeare, Romeo & Juliet, and Elizabethan England than by watching the History Channel.
Plus it’s not the embarrassment Baz Luhrman’s feeble effort was. ;P
