UPDATES Disney Supports Biggest Shareholder Steve Jobs’ iPad
Disney announced today that Marvel Comics is on iPad:
Marvel Comics App includes over 500 of Marvel’s greatest comic books, from classic stories to modern tales, featuring Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Man, Hulk, Thor and more of the world’s most popular Super Heroes. The Marvel Comics App offers the option to preview three pages from each available comic before purchasing and a cutting edge recommendation engine for every fan to find a comic they’re sure to love. The app also arms fans with a handy comic shop locator, allowing them to find their local retailer’s address and phone number and then journey even further into the Marvel Universe. To further enhance the mobile reading experience on the iPad, the Marvel Comics App features multiple viewing modes, taking readers panel-by-panel through the comic book in a smooth, action-packed progression using just the swipe of a finger.

If this is anything like Marvel’s digital comic site it’s completely unusable.
Marvel is speeding the plow on killing the monthly print comic book biz with this app. This is a way for them to realize more profit without printing and distribution costs. This may be genius in the short term, but it opens the pandora’s box to piracy and a devaluing of the physical comic as an investor’s/collector’s item.
Piracy already exists in the comic industry, just look at any torrent site. You can literally download every single X-Men related comic ever written .
Also, what does Marvel care about devaluing a comic’s investment potential? They don’t see that money any way. Not to mention the fact that the comic collector boom/bust happened over 15 years ago now…
Print is dying if it’s not already dead so the notion of a publisher of comic books not speeding to this type of thing is suicidal. This is bad for shops sure but I’m not sure how they get to sit out the upheaval.
If Marvel can find a way (i.e. the will) to get archival access working (and I’m talking about being able to read/see essentially the whole library in color scans or what have you via the touchpad) I’d buy an ipad just for that purpose and pay a good lump fee if not an annual sub. All they would have to do is sell the Masterworks editions as ebooks essentially but they have to plan it out, release them thoughtfully and sequentially if not all at once (which would be overwhelming).
Lastly, don’t tie library release to whatever movie is being promoted currently. Get everyone in the bullpen at their leisure, the stuff can still be extra-promoted when synergy calls.
Hire me I’ll do it.
