EXCLUSIVE: When Modern Family star Ed O’Neill submits himself this week for Emmy Awards consideration, he will do it in the Supporting Actor category, despite being the biggest name star on the hit ABC sitcom. Insiders said that O’Neill’s move will be emulated by all of the principal cast members. While this might cost the show some trophies, sources said O’Neill is making the surprising move because he felt that nobody is bigger than anybody else in a show that is evolving into a true ensemble hit. When shows start out anchored by stars like O’Neill and then evolve into ensembles, egos often get bruised—remember when Rob Lowe left The West Wing?
In a final note on Modern Family, I am also hearing that the entire principal cast will be brought to New York next month for ABC’s upfront presentation, the only cast making the trip for the network.

The best comedy on television. Brilliant.
OK, Angry, I’ll watch it once and it better be good – I’m talkin’ Harper boys in a three way good.
Make it the Fizbo The Clown episode…you won’t be disappointed.
Love, love, love Fizbo.
In response to your comment about Terri Hatcher, the 4 main ladies of Desperate Housewives (Marcia, Eva Longoria, Teri, and Felicity) all entered themselves into the lead actress in a comedy series and have since done so every season and still continue to.
That’s an elegant move. They come across as a happy cast on the show, great to see they’re a team. It has given Ed O’Neill a whole new chapter, he could have been all Terri Hatcher about it. Bravo Ed!
The best comedy to hit the small screen since Arrested Development. There are only a few in a decade that are as excellent as Modern Family.
Agreed. A very funny, tremendously well-written comedy. It also has a younger generation’s sense of humor, so I’m surprised it’s taken off like it has. But perhaps the good-old-fashioned family values of it all — even including a pair of gay guys who adopted an Asian baby together — rings true with many older people.
just think of the threesome that will happen in a few years!
Such a surprise when big talent on a hit new show is humble and has class. Its character like this that makes being in the biz worth it. Great show, congrats with all the success.
Wow Mike your standards are pretty low. He decided to go for SA. If he wanted to be humble he would have taken himself out of contention and promoted someone else.
This is a Ed O’Neill his dry humor is 10 times better than SC.
I don’t mean for this to sound insulting in the slightest, but in a perfect world, Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Mitchell) and Eric Stonestreet (Cam) would be nominated together as they are probably the most realistic couple on television and would win as a tie. While yes, they are funny apart (the recent bit where Mitchell went out with his dad and Manny to watch a meteor shower while Cam went out with Gloria being a good example), to try and say that one is more deserving of an Emmy than the other is crazy and for voters to have to choose one better than the other would be a Sophie’s Choice.
Ed O’Neill’s character has my fantasy marriage. Well, except for the annoying kid, but even that is a small price to pay…..
Having worked briefly with Ed as an actor, this is par for the course for him. He’s a very gracious, generous guy.
A classy move by a consumate professional. Others could learn from him.
HAHAHA yes the fizbo the clown episode is STELLAR. i friggin love this show. i hope it has a really great run. the characters are cast perfectly.
Writing is great, the acting is one point as is the timing. I look forward to new episodes after each one ends. My fave on TV right now. Kudos to the entire Family!
Ed O’Neill is a classy guy. (And he deserved the Best Actor Emmy for Married in 1989-1991 but wasn’t even considered.)
I’ve only just now found this show in the last couple weeks but I immediately made it a TiVo season pass. It’s brilliant.
BUNDY! BUNDY! BUNDY!
Hailing from the UK, I was so pleased to have been persuaded to watch this series from the outset.
It’s comedy is perfection. I have not seen this calibre of homegrown American comedy for a long, long time.
MODERN FAMILY is one of the finest comedies ever broadcast. I’d place it in the lofty company of THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, and SEINFELD. The writing and acting was stellar right out of the gate with the pilot. It is exceptional in every way.
When I watched the Pilot I thought it was decent at best, but the show gets better and better. It captures the documentary tone of the British Office, whereas the American version just feels like a sitcom. Truly an ensemble comedy… every character is excellent. My favorite half hour of comedy since Arrested Development or Extras.
So interesting to see the comments and comparsions to my long lost Arrested Development, I thought it was just my gang of friends who felt the two were similar!~
Modern Family should absolutely get an Emmy for Best Comedy period and yes its a real Sophie’s choice to have to pick who is most deserving out of the actors. You just have to watch each and pick who shined in which, add them up and then say..
Ty Burrell..I die when he was passing a stone, when he stole the kid’s bike, when he blamed his kid for the porn, his lust over Gloria, his birthday lust for a ipad..I could go on…he is sinfully great!
But yea there is Eric Stonestreet, the pilot epsiode should go down in history..
Long live Modern Family! Did I mention Julie Bowen..Claire?
Just give em the Emmy please already.
This is, I think, a smart and magnanimous move by O’Neill. He proves that the show is about more than him, which is one of its greatest strengths. Amongst a cast of 6 adults and 4 kids, there isn’t a weak spot to be found. Here’s hoping they take home a well-deserved Best Ensemble award at the SAGs!
And wise up, Emmy people – it’s time you gave out your own ensemble award. Loooong overdue.
Modern Family truly is the best thing on TV right now, network or cable (I tivoed Treme but haven’t watched yet…). I’m sure there will be haters to slam it since it’s so popular (god forbid!), but it has that combo of sweetness, irreverence and hilarity that is a once-in-a-lifetime thing. Every member of the cast deserves a trophy.
nice move by o’neill. that aside, am i the only one that finds Mod Fam slow and just kind of boring? i’ve never thought, “wow, i did not see that coming,” like on seinfeld or curb or arrested.
Am I the only one who think’s it’s overrated?
It’s a solid take on traditional sitcom plotlines (making many of the same old stuff seem new again), but it’s nowhere near as good as Arrested Development.
I love this show. I think it’s a classy but also convenient move by O’Neill. The show IS a true ensemble cast and I don’t know how you justify O’Neill’s character as the lead any more than Vergara’s, Bowen’s, Burrell’s, Stonestreet’s, or Ferguson’s.
Modern Family should be raking in the awards love. Its writers and directors are deservedly getting a lot of credit but the cast shouldn’t be overlooked. Glee is the hype story of the year and there’s no question that its cast is versatile (Lynch and Colfer being the standouts with the best material to work with), but the Modern Family cast delivers its lines seamlessly and deserves a lot more love than it has been getting.
MF’s team need to submit the episode called Fears for consideration. That one made me howl with laughter from beginning to end.
