EXCLUSIVE: Dick Wolf is once again looking to expand his Law & Order empire to 4 series on the air. Sources tell me that NBC has picked up Law & Order: Los Angeles (aka LOLA) with a 13-episode order for fall. Brotherhood creator Blake Masters is on board to write the new series set in Los Angeles with Wolf. The Wolf Films/UMS project has been in development for the past couple of months.
Additionally, Law & Order: SVU is cleared for a 12th season pending some minor budgetary matters. The cast led by Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni have already been clearing their schedule to shoot new episodes for the crime drama in June and July. Hargitay and Meloni are set to return as part of the one-year deal they signed with NBC after lengthy negotiations last spring, which includes an option for a second year. After suffering a sharp ratings decline in the fall when it was transplanted from 10 PM to 9 PM to make room for The Jay Leno Show, SVU has been gaining ground since it was moved back to 10 PM after the Winter Olympics. The show also is getting a boost this spring from a story arc with Sharon Stone.
Meanwhile, chances also look pretty good a record-breaking 21st season of the mothership Law & Order series, with the series’ cable home TNT expected to pitch in with an off-network fee to offset the cost of bringing the show back. Not returning for the record 21st season is veteran cast member S. Epatha Merkerson who recently asked the series’ producers to be released. (She didn’t have a deal beyond Season 20.)
Elsewhere, after a cast overhaul, Law & Order: Criminal Intent just kicked in its 9th season on USA Network. The last time Wolf had 4 L&O series on the air was in 2005 when the short-lived Law & Order: Trial by Jury joined the stories franchise.
NBC, UMS and Wolf Films declined comment.

WOW, the mothership “Law & Order” series is at a record-breaking 21st season! Doesn’t that beat the former champ ‘Gunsmoke’ which ran from ’55 to ’75? Amazing!
Blake Master is a super-talent…
“Brotherhood” never got the respect it deserved. Dick Wolf is lucky to have a true voice like Masters in his stable.
I didn’t watch when it was called L.A. Dragnet…
So NBC’s idea to reverse its fortunes is to air a 4th version of a show that’s already past its prime? This is just beyond stupid.
The funny thing is, even though “L&O” will break the season record, it would still have to run for nearly 200 more episodes to catch up to “Gunsmoke”, which has 635. “L&O” has about 450…
PLUS…After the original ‘Gunsmoke” went off the air, there were five Gunsmoke made for TV movies.
SO excited! I was just telling a friend, “You know, we need another procedural, and preferably, another Law & Order on television.”
Love Blake’s work!!! Excited to hear that the new L&O will have some pedigree behind it.
More L&O… what just happened? Did anyone hear that or was that just me? Pretty soon it will only be just police and medical dramas.
I think Law and Order is getting better and better each season. The flagship show is the best its been since Jerry O. was in the cast.
L&O LA should be interesting. I hope it does well since will be great for the city. The NYC L&Os have keep a lot of actors busy the past few years. There was a NY Times article about the L&O acting industry in NYC- everything from extras to pretty compelling parts.
Blake IS a super-talent… and if you don’t believe me, just ask him.
Don’t forget Law and Order: UK
But I guess that’s not shown in the US.
Any truth to the rumor that Sharon Gless has been approached to reprise her Cagney & Lacey role, replacing Van Buren as lieutenant?
Just what the world of television need, yet another L&O series. As if a lawyer series based in LA is an original idea. Does Dick Wolf not have it in himself to create anything other than L&O?
It will be interesting to see who they get to start in this. Those of you who follow the Mothership may remember that Det. Curtis (Benjamin Bratt) referenced that he is living in California, when he came back for one episode in December. Would be good to bring him back in or maybe even have Det. Goren from CI show up in LA looking for a job.
LOLA will have a higher weekly budget than the LAPD.
CHUCK is screwed!!!!
I heard NBC is prepping for Golden Girls L.A. now that Betty White is hot again…
Nice Expansion. I only wish I could write for this show..
I wonder what S. Epatha Merkerson is thinking. If she still wants to work on television, why would she turn down a bread and butter job like this?
So it’s going to be a show about gangs, drive by shootings, and illegals?
L.A. needs L&O L.A. – it could be the definitive show on a city that has been waiting for a good storyteller like Masters. It was the choice location for film noir. Now with the Wolf-Masters pedigree it will be the best L.A. based show. Now if only Vincent and Kathryn topped the cast ….
Can Benson and Stabler be on this one too?
Great…LOLA, another forum for Wolf’s wacky Leftist nonsense. He took a great franchise and foisted his personal soap box on many of us who used to be viewers.
I’ll pass, thank you.
Used to watch them; but they are too far left.
