EXCLUSIVE: Gossip Girl co-creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are expanding their Fake Empire banner into feature films. Paramount has staked them to a two-year first look producing deal, and Schwartz and Savage are hiring WME agent Lis Rowinski aboard to run the film company as vice president of features. Rowinski, who spent the last decade at Endeavor and then WME, was part of the agency team that repped Schwartz and Savage. She will take an office on the Paramount lot.
The deal was made by Paramount Film Group president Adam Goodman. While Schwartz and Savage don’t have the feature track record they have on TV—they worked together on his series creation The O.C. and he also co-created the NBC hit Chuck—Goodman felt they were well placed to make the jump from TV to features the way that Bad Robot’s JJ Abrams and Bryan Burk did at Paramount and Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci did at DreamWorks when Goodman was president there. The hope is that they’ll infuse their film company with the expedient pace that the television business works at, and introduce new TV writing talent into the movie mix.
The deal, which begins June 1, is unusual in that it is not loaded with high overhead—Schwartz and Savage already have a big overall TV deal with Len Goldstein at Warner Bros Television– but Paramount will give them a lot of autonomy to buy projects with a hip youthful vibe that the studio hopes will pay off in a not obvious hit like the next Paranormal Activity, District 9 or Transformers. Schwartz and Savage are incentivized to be prolific suppliers of films with a pop entertainment sensibility for Paramount and its MTV Films and Nickelodeon Films banners.
Schwartz and Savage so far have one film project set, an updated adaptation of the Jay McInerney novel Bright Lights, Big City which Schwartz is writing to direct, with Savage producing. The project predated the Paramount deal and is set up at MGM.

Apparently, Adam Goodman has never seen even one episode of anything Josh Schwartz has produced. Creatively bankrupted television at its worst. More sad news from Hollywood. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to look under my kitchen sink to find a gallon of bleach to swallow.
What is Paramount doing? Making overall producer deals and crazy rich talent deals like the Baron Cohen film? This isn’t the 90s anymore… All of the other studios have stopped doing business like that.
Creatively bankrupted? Apparently you never watched the first few seasons of The O.C. which was a delightful return to teen drama with relatable and strong characters and interesting story lines. Schwartz is a screenwriter with a youthful sensibility that Paramount could use these days..smart move Goodman
I worked for Lis and there’s no better person for this job. She rocks and has the best sense of humor. Endeavor was and always will be her family but I’m so excited she is taking the next step and such a fantastic one at that. CONGRATS!!
She’s super cute too.
I worked for Lis and she rocks! they couldn’t have picked a better person for this job – she will finally be able to bring great comedy to the screen. I’m so excited that she made her next move, out of the representational world into the real deal… CONGRATS LR and welcome to walking the talk!!
Does Lis have some kind of blackmail over Adrianna? She kept her from being laid off and/or fired about three times in the last year and then when her biggest client gets a deal, she eases her over to the job. Must be nice. You go girl!
Wow, sounds as though someone in the inner circle is green with envy! When you have the back of such a brilliant, creative, well liked and respected agent (something not easy to be in this town), it’s more like priority mail. However, you must be on the fringe of the circle; I heard that Adriana did NOT want Lis to leave WME. Lis is certainly the person for the job, and will knock it out of the park. Kudos to Josh and Stephanie for choosing her for the job. You obviously see what many others see.
The best thing Josh ever did for his career was to get rid of Mikkel ‘the cult’ Bondesen. Wait for the other clients to follow suit.
Yet again, huge acclaim for two writers who – and these are talented people – ADAPTED a series of novels.
Cecily von Ziegesar created “Gossip Girl” and yet you fail to mention her name, as if she does not exist anywhere in the equation.
While Schwartz and Savage certainly made Serena Vanedwoodsen wildly popular, Cecily von Ziegesar made her in the first place.
I have no problem with people getting the rewards for their talent, as long as it gets shared fairly.
Lis rocks. Congrats for getting outta that place and landing a sweet gig!
Goodman gave Jason Hoffs a producing deal at Dreamworks. This led to a black hole that consumed most of the marble in the lobby and foyer of the studio. There are some that say if you read a script that Hoffs developed during that time your brain will actual exit your body looking for respect elsewhere. With this hire, Goodman has likely damned the earth to seven years of darkness.
Besides the adapted novel angle, the real story is that Savage was groomed by Mcg…who also had a HUGE hand in making The OC a hit for Schwartz. But nobody wants to talk about Mcg’s involvement because it’s much more fun to make fun of his name. I don’t know how far either of these two would have gotten without Mcg fighting for them years ago.
And the elephant in the room is that Gossip Girl has pretty crappy ratings depsite its use as a CW marketing tool.
Still, good for these two. Hard workers both.
You’re right, we’ll never know how far they would have gotten without McG.
But we do know how far he got without them. Since Stephanie produced the Charlies Angels films and Josh and Stephanie created OC, McG has directed two movies that bombed terribly, one which destroyed an entire franchise.
Meanwhile, they created another pop cultural phenomenon in Gossip Girl.
Do the math, people!!
Hooray for Lis!!
Lis is going to kill it. She had the best taste in the lit dept and she is great with talent. Schwartz & Savage are wise at partnering with Lis…watch the empire rise.
I’ve known Josh since he was a junior in college. We’ve worked on a number of projects together. He’s one of the nicest, most decent people I’ve ever encountered in this business. Although I’ve had less dealings with Liz, when I did they were pleasant and energetic.
I wish them all the best.
I read Schwartz’s script for Bright Lights. It was brilliant. They’re going to do great in the feature world. People like to work w/ them, they’re super smart, team oriented, work really hard and don’t suffer from the ego problems that plague many in this business. It’s refreshing to see people like that do well.
Way to go Josh! You’re quite an inspiration to our generation. To add all this to your resume at such a young age — who says you can’t achieve such accomplishments in your youth. Thanks for proving the critics wrong!
Good kid. Just wish he had some talent.
Adam Goodman wants vapid MTV “totally in your face” garbage and that’s what he’s going to get — which means that’s what we as an audience are going to get as a result.
Josh like other people said above is one of the nicest people i have ever met or had the pleasure of working with
savage on the other hand is a cold hearted bitch, and only has a career because she rode josh’s coattails. Just a mean woman, and not creative at all. She tanked the OC when Josh got less involved and after catching up with the latest batch of Gossip Girl episodes I can see shes doing the same thing
Anonymous is obviously someone who has no idea of how Josh and Stephanie work together or their history. Contrary to what Anonymous says, Stephanie is one of the hardest working, classiest and kindest people in this town. A true taste maker and influencer. She is well regarded by her peers and at the executive level of all the studios. Has re-written and fixed several big budget successful features without credits and will continue to create great television. Monday’s GG ratings were very strong! Together they will continue to make great films at Paramount. Anon is just another sad, angry frustrated writer who can’t get past the assistant level or waitress job and can only take it out on a DH”wood comment board. I will add a bit to the tip next time I order from you at my favorite restaurant to calm you down.
Wow, short VIA NOW! Someone lose a bet?
Josh brings interesting ideas to TV, though they don’t get the best ratings
Hey TV Guy:
When did Josh rid himself of Fuse? Still there as of last Friday.
I heard a few years back that Josh Schwartz was adapting John Green’s novel Looking for Alaska into a film, I really hope this is true as I’m a huge fan of their work. Yet there is no metion above..
Congratulations to Josh and Stephanie, cannot wait to see more of their work!
I think it speaks volumes when several people who’ve been assistants for someone make it a point to say how great of a boss you were. I too worked for Lis (even though it was only for about 2 weeks). She’s pretty awesome and will kick ass for sure.
