UPDATED: NBC has renewed midseason drama Parenthood for next season. While not an out-of-the-gate hit, Parenthood has been a solid performer in the Tuesday 10 p.m. slot, averaging a 3.2 ‘Live Plus 7′ rating/9 share in adults 18-49 and 7.8 million viewers overall and topping regular competition in the hour, including CBS’ well-received freshman drama The Good Wife. Parenthood is the second freshman scripted series NBC has renewed, following the early pickup for comedy Community. On the unscripted side, NBC recently renewed freshmen Marriage Ref, Minute to Win It and Who Do You Think You Are?
The early renewal of Parenthood was done for planning purposes, so the writing staff can be locked in and writers and producers have plenty of time to work on Season 2, NBC and UMS’ scripted programming chief Angela Bromstad said. But the network also wanted Parenthood and Community “to feel rewarded” with early pickups not tied to NBC’s fall development, she said. “Those are shows we believe in.” The fate of several other scripted series, including freshman Mercy, Chuck and Heroes, will depend on the number of new series NBC decides to pick up, with partial orders for the bubble series seriously considered. (Heroes had been looking promising for a 13-episode final chapter” to air in the fall.) Parenthood, based on Ron Howard’s movie, is produced by Imagine Television and UMS. Jason Katims created the series and is executive producing with Howard, Brian Grazer and David Nevins.

Katims can do no wrong. Ryan Murphy wishes GLEE had half the heart FNL and PARENTHOOD do. Nice pickup, NBC.
Totally agree. Murphy writes in broad caricature and stereotype and arch, tired “quirk”…Katims writes, subtly and often brilliantly, real human beings.
Wow its lucky to have the overall weakest competition at its time during the week. Just look at what its up against in that time slot, nothing.
You obviously haven’t heard of The Good Wife.
it deserved a pickup, but im curious since first week it got a 3.1 and has been in 2′s since then, how is it averaging a 3.2 over its 7 eps?
Live plus 7 accounts for the bump.
Good show but needs a little more sizzle/unpredictability to go the distance. It’s may have ‘heart’ but there’s no watercooler factor whatsoever.

GREAT SHOW. WELL DESERVED. WILL KEEP GETTING BETTER.
That’s fantastic news! Hands down best new (network) drama of the season.
i was wondering does this mean they will put it on the fall schedule for next season?
Parenthood is a fantastic show. I usually don’t watched scripted hour shows that aren’t procedural or available on-demand, just since it takes so much effort to keep up with them, but every week I look forward to this. Really glad it’s sticking around for another season.
It is on the demand channel. I’m slleeping by 10 but always watch the next day. I love this show!
what’s with the 3.2 rating??
first episode was 3.1, the 2.6 2.3 2.7 2.5 2.6 2.5 – still very good, but nowhere near avarage 3.2
Remember when a 3.2 got you bumped to Friday nights in August at 10 PM.
One of the best shows on television. Glad it’s been picked up.
I wonder what the cost per eps. is? With a cast that large, full of ‘names’, it must be one of the costliest.
I agree with the sizzle comment…I like the show, however it’s all neatly wrapped up in a little musical montage at the end of each episode…it’s a little too feel good.
OMG, this show is so boring. I think I shall be sick if forced to watch more than 5 minutes.
However, I supposed if you’re a parent of a particular salary and cultural range, this is a perfect fit.
wow…to each his own. I watched the first episode and found it UN-watchable. took it out of my Tivo right then and there. the script was tired, the characters cliché and really all just uninspired.
and I was hoping for far better as I think the folks associate with it (both in front of and behind the cameras) are solid citizens in this arena. perhaps, it’s getting better and maybe it’s my loss, but I’ll survive.
shocked to see this much love…and in Nikki’s column, no less!
The show seems made by and for “mid-level” (i.e. folks who “only” make 2-3 million per year) Hollywood producers/writers/directors, who are middle aged parents, living in West LA.
That’s OK, I guess, but where the heck is any action-adventure series on TV? Its shocking to see how absent anything like Miami Vice is from network TV.
Who would watch this show over THE GOOD WIFE? PARENTHOOD is unforgivably boring.
Parenthood is so white it makes my head ache. Having the little biracial kid doesn’t help. The fact that he belongs to the no-good son makes it worse. It always bugged me that in the movie, he was a f*ck up and it’s implied that that’s how he got a black kid. At least on the TV show, they let the kid’s mother show her face for 30 seconds or so before she disappeared so they can say they had a black woman on the show I guess. I stopped watching anything Ron Howard creates long ago. He seems to go out of his way to keep his films all white. I swear the man has never had a minority character (of any importance) in any of his movies. It’s very troubling.
one less pilot of nbc to pick up.
Brilliant show.
