People Magazine has hired a new film critic to replace Leah Rozen, the mag’s critic since 1997 who took a buyout late last year. The gig went to Alynda Wheat, who spent the last six years at Entertainment Weekly. Rosen’s exit came at a time when media was lamenting the death of film criticism. While things haven’t improved that much — the big shocker for me was the exit of my former Daily Variety colleague Todd McCarthy — any fear that People would phase out reviews is dispelled by this hire. I must confess she was not on my reviewer radar (frankly, I never heard of her), but it’s not surprising that People would hire from within the Time Inc magazine family.
New ‘Man Of Steel’ Television Spot #6

At EW she did mainly TV stuff (Watch to Watch, some features).
Surprised they didn’t go outside, though, what with all the fine critics who aren’t employed currently.
Since EW is in danger of merging into People at Time Inc anyway, this is more of a lateral move (or even promotion) rather than one book stealing a critic from another.
She’s a talented enough writer. I’m happy for her.
I’ve enjoyed her work in EW. If this is a better job, I am happy for her. More info about the possibility of EW merging into People please.
I wanted to comment on Alynda Wheat, the pseudo Black woman…Why was she picked to commentate on the “Best in Film?”…Her voice is annoying!…It sounded like she was sucking in helium…I put her on mute every time she spoke…It’s like she got all the Black sucked out of her!…Stick to behind the scenes please! Pretty face but ugly voice!
