The producers intend to frame the movie in the vein of All The President’s Men. One of the planned film’s hooks is that some of the journalists are themselves Catholic and were conflicted as they researched and wrote their stories. This journalism angle seems a fascinating way to approach the topic. And, interestingly, the Boston Globe investigative team was headed by Ben Bradlee, Jr., son of the legendary Washington Post editor who stood behind Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein when their Watergate reporting was assailed by Richard Nixon’s White House.
The production companies Anonymous Content and Rocklin/Faust have made deals to develop the feature film about the Catholic Church’s decades-long cover-up of its pedophile priest scandal that rocked the New England faithful. The producers acquired the life rights of the Boston Globe “Spotlight Team” of reporters and editors who were part of the team that shared the Pulitzer Prize in 2003 for meritorious public service for their reporting. The year-long investigation by The Globe of the cover-up, which was initially denied by church officials, reverberated all the way to the Vatican. It culminated in the emotional resignation of Cardinal Law, who acknowledged mistakes that could have prevented some of the abuse from occurring. It also opened the floodgates for exposure of other Catholic Church molestation scandals in Canada, Ireland, Chile and elsewhere.
Journalists including Bradlee Jr., Michael Rezendes, Walter Robinson, Sacha Pfeiffer, Matt Carroll and Globe editor Marty Baron will cooperate with the film. Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin and Michael Sugar will produce with Nicole Rocklin and Blye Faust. David Mizner brought the project to them and will be a consultant. The production companies will package the project before looking for financing.

Call me weird, but if the pic was a factually well-documented dramaticized historical film, I might actually see this type of pic. Sometime you watch a movie to be educated about a subject, distasteful topic notwithstanding. Schindler’s List was a tremendous film, even if it did make you want to drink a bottle of scotch and cry it off silently in your bed at night. I think we all have to be reminded from time to time that the evil that resides in the hearts of mankind is still, and always will be with us. It could also lead to a huge shake- up in the Catholic Church- that is so long in coming- time to seperate the wheat from the Chaff, baby!
Let’s see when will they make a movie about the murderous imams of Islam. I guess it will never happen because they will get death threats and besides it’s politically incorrect.
Absurd. it would be far more appropriate to be doing a movie about how Boston Globe, NYT, NYP, WP, CT etc conspired for decades to ignore the victims of pedophile priests.
The media is every bit as complicit in allowing this to go on for decades as the cops, the Church, and local and state government.
These people should be doing a movie on the abusers, from their POV instead to drive home the point about how sick, twisted, and truly evil they are, and to show people how much the Church collaborated in giving them access to kids.
Peace
The Boston Globe put all the pieces together to break the story and hundreds of thousands of kids could be more likely abused without the work of these journalists to bring the story to light. They met with thousands of victims. And telling a film from a perspective of a group of journalists doesnt mean that the abusers will not be shown to be sick twisted and evil. I have done some homework – you should look on the Boston Globe’s website entirely dedicated to the church.
You need to climb out of the well you have fallen into. Walk down the street to a Catholic Church at 7AM. Pay a dollar, light a candle for yourself, sit next to a real live person, and say hello. Then sit through the short mass. No one is going to kill you Mr. Lee. Relax. See if that headache doesn’t go away.
The media is every bit as complicit in allowing this to go on for decades as the cops, the Church, and local and state government
let’s not kid ourselves, priest abuse has not been going on for merely a few decades, this has been going on since the church’s ‘conception’. the only reason there are not complaints from more than a few decades ago is that the previous victims are too dead to complain.
Why can’t they just leave the Catholic Church alone? The same stuff happens in protestant churches too! Jeesh.
Not to mention in the public schools… but I guess that’s OK because it is union members doing the molesting.
Finally! Someone takes on this corrupted religion who used their weird “magical-thinking” doctrines and belief system to coverup egregiously evil and unlawful behavior.
Cardinal Law of Boston and the others who were given “amnesty” from testifying to local authorities need to be brought back to the U.S. to answer for their crimes. This church is NOT ABOVE THE LAW. The way the heirarchy has handled this abuse….known to all for over 20 years…is anything BUT infallible. these people screwed up big time and need to be treated like any other religion.
Can the Catholics who bloviated on this blog imagine what they would write if the same thing were going on with the MORMONS? Stop the hypocritical apologizing and make this religion accountable!!!
at least this has the potential to be an engaging, character-driven story. which is more than i can say for the slew of 3d, special effects-driven, tentpole popcorn junk the studios are forced to churn out ad nauseum. it sounds like this could be something in the vein of REVERSAL OF FORTUNE–I watched NETWORK the other night for the first time in years. it’s so obvious we don’t value the same things in movies now as we used to… and i can’t help but feel that quality has really gone down overall as a result.
that all said, i see nothing anti-catholic or anti-american about revisiting this story form the perspective of the journalists whyo uncovered the scandal. what i take from the article isn’t that this will be a shock-jocking rehash of the scandal, but look at the cover-up unraveling under scrutiny. i’m excited for it, and wish more movies like THIS were being made.
and yeah… a MOHAMMED movie would never get made, but a boy can dream right?
All the various hundreds of religions of the supernatural [Jesus, Mohamed, Buddha, others I don't even know, you name it]; I mean all of them, are the fundamental basis, the reason, for human strife, pain, mayhem, slaughters, destruction, killing, violence, cross burnings, misunderstandings, and general conflict in our world … from the very beginning. I’m afraid that won’t change. Humans are are not too bright when it come to preserving dignity and peace. If I had to subscribe to any sort of ‘religion’ it would be that of the early American Indian. They believed in the ‘spirit’ of the natural surroundings, the animals, plants, sun, sky; and would have continued to thrive in that way had it not been for the English invasion and of course, the endruing disaster. Our problems as a race of humans [of any color or denomination] will not be solved until we as a complete race [of humans] come to realize what we are doing and fix the problem. That process can only begin when we rid ourselves of this stupid mythical idea of religion. Frankly, I don’t see that happening any time soon. It is all so awful and pointless. We are products of our youth. What we learned growing up is what we tenaciously hang onto. If we learned Bible from our parents or the local church, then that’s what we hold on to. The priests or ministers of all the churches know this and that’s why they’re always in the news. They have to be acknowledged in order to be viable. I feel that people in general are just confused. Those who are trying to get to heaven through their ‘good deeds’ are only deluding themselves. That heaven they are trying to get to only exists in their own minds. The churches like that though. More money for their coffers. It’s too bad that all that human energy [and funds] couldn’t be put to more use in bringing about a more universally dignified approach to being human. Being people. The human approach. Being part of the earth that gives us so much. That which we defile in so many ways. Well, I guess that’s it. I hope this points us to a more logical and appropriate path. However, I don’t think so. The world will go on pretty much as it always has … with myth and superstition as their guide. Another way to say this is that human intellect and brilliance will be trumped by stupidity.
You are an Idiot, Your secularist Idealism is only surpassed in stupidity by your self-centeredness and self-righteousness and that is truly sad.
The statistics are shocking
1 in 4 girls is sexually abused before the age of 18. (96)
1 in 6 boys is sexually abused before the age of 18. (96)
1 in 5 children are solicited sexually while on the internet. (30, 87)
Nearly 70% of all reported sexual assaults (including assaults on adults) occur to children ages 17 and under. (76)
An estimated 39 million survivors of childhood sexual abuse exist in America today. (1)
Even within the walls of their own homes, children are at risk for sexual abuse
30-40% of victims are abused by a family member. (2, 44, 76)
Another 50% are abused by someone outside of the family whom they know and trust.
Approximately 40% are abused by older or larger children whom they know. (1, 44)
Therefore, only 10% are abused by strangers.
This is a Global Problem not a Catholic Problem!
You’re one of those ignorant gaia types who don’t seem to understand history. Religion is just one facet of the historical panacea that has caused us to get to this point. Western Christian religion, in fact, has been argued as the source of the freedoms you now take for granted, including scientific inquiry.
Resources have actually been the cause of most wars. That and pride in land grabs between nations. In fact, if my clock is right, we should be seeing another major war within the next 20 years or so. Most likely this will be due to the rise of the emerging markets and the fall of the ‘developed’ world.
Maybe they should do a movie on the 27,000 children molested each year in the public school system, not the Church which had a total of 6 last year. Don’t believe me? It was a Department of Education report which provided the numbers.
A study commissioned be the U.S. Department of Education found that physical sexual abuse of students in high school is 100 times greater than the abuse of priests. The fashionable anti Catholicism bigotry raises it’s ugly head yet again. I would like to see someone investigate the personal lives of the producers of this bigotry.
Maybe you are all just small minded. These people protected so many children from being abused and their work helped people realize they needed to check those in power.
How about a comedic take involving the secondary group of victims of this scandal? I’m talking about the Boston area faithful who saw their churches closed and sold by an arrogant archdiocese in order to pay for the sexual abuse settlements. It’s a great story that hasn’t even been touched. And as we all know laughter is the best medicine. Let the healing begin!
I am waiting for these same Zionists to make a movie on the child sex within the Orthodox Community.
It is at least as big as the Catholics.
How about an uplifting film about the majority of great priests
who have lived faithful to their vows and have done so much good for the poor, the troubled, the elderly, and immigrants. Would that be too boring?
I think this may prove to be a popular film. Catholic-bashing has become enormously popular.
Hollywood hates Catholics, the investors will realize that the movie will not do well. Actors should consider they will be tagged as “Catholic Haters” for the rest of their career.
Moguls will still produce the movie, looking for ignorant investors and holding a deep-seated grudge against Catholics.
Travis has a point. Pointing to the guilt of others does not excuse anyone.
But, if the movie is motivated by concern for innocent children, rather than just bashing the Catholic Church, then why not expose the whole rotten cover up throughout society?
If the point of the film is to show what went wrong in the Church, why not strive for accuracy? – The title seems to suggest that the abusers acted under direction from the Pope! That’s unbelievable; can they really have evidence, or are they relying on innuendo to “prove” a lie?
As the Pope has already angrily charged that legitimate reportage about him and his church delaying the removal of pedophile priests is the equivalent of antisemitism, the mind boggles at what wildly inappropriate “I AM THE REAL VICTIM HERE” shrieking comparisons he’ll come up with for this one.
Why that is a shocker: the Hollywood Left bored already with making Watergate movies goes on a witchhunt against the Catholic church over 20, 30, 40 and 50 year old allegations.
Sounds interesting–but if you hate the Catholic church so intensely that you lose your ability to reason.
Love it. No matter what u think about the scandal, it will be a hit. Too much PR and solaciousness to ignore.
Zzzzzz…How ’bout an expose of the sex abuse scandals among teachers in public schools. According to experts it’s ’100 times worse’ than any clergy sex abuse.
Maybe the reporters in Boston, Washington, and L.A. were conflicted and maybe they reported real facts, but that doesn’t mean they did anything courageous or even demonstrated craftsmanship. What they did was practice bar stool journalism and filled their pieces with anti-catholic tirades learned on their mother’s knee or in the university classroom.
You sound like a bar stool “expert” yourself who hates it when REAL Catholic gumshoe investigators at the Globe win Pulitzers for exposing this sacred cow crime spree.
Wow, big surprise here, the athiest zionists that control hollywood and the media are increasing their attacks against the church. This should be taken as evidence that there is an organized movement against the church by a group of elites. And it really makes me sick.
So a movie about a handful of terrible priests in the Catholic church.
I wonder if Hollywood would ever make a movie about the handful of Muslim leaders who export violence in the name of their religion? Doubt it…
The liberals and the press wanted no part of this story back when it was actually happening. They waited until after it was cleaned up to report on it. Good Catholics that lamented the infiltration of homosexuals into the priesthood were called homophobic and mean-spirited by liberals. But now that its over, all the sudden they are appalled and won’t let it go. We all heard the whispers and rumors about a priest here and there back in “the 70s” when the world was going crazy with sex, drugs and rock & roll. But the liberal press sure didn’t care – not as long as those few odd-ball priests were carrying their water, bringing a liberal agenda into the Church. Now they stand in judgment – ha, they were part of it as far as I’m concerned.
Wow! The CAtholic hierarchy must have put all their staff to work to try to discredit this film with the comments. This evil hierarchy needs to be exposed. They hidden pedophile priests long enough. Don’t thay call that obstruction of justice when other folks do it? Right on with the film. I’ll go to see it.
