The much-hyped Madonna-themed episode of Fox’s Glee drew a 5.3 rating/14 share among adults 18-49 and 13.5 million viewers overall last night. That was down 5% from the series high the musical comedy hit in its return to originals last week. Its lead-in, American Idol (6.7/20, 19.1 million) was down 8% week-to-week but is expected to rise in the finals due to a 3-minute overrun. It was more good news for NBC’s freshman series Parenthood, which got an early renewal yesterday. Last night, the family dramedy posted a 2.9/8 in the demo at 10 PM, up 16% from last week. Heading in the opposite direction were ABC’s Lost (3.6/9), down 8% for a series low, and Dancing with the Stars’ result show (2.4/7), down 14% and also hitting an all-time low. In bubble show watch, ABC’s V (2.3/7) perked up, up 5% at 10 PM despite a weaker Lost lead-in. NBC’s Biggest Loser (3.3/9) was flat, and CBS’ lineup was in reruns.

Okay, I’ve given “Glee” enough of my time. Last year the show was quirky and different but now it is just more of the same. Sue is a bully, Sue gets taken down. The glee club is at risk, the glee club overcomes. And the musical numbers are so overly-augmented with professional background singers that they all sound like McDonald’s commercials.
Too bad.
GLEE!!!! ROCKS!!!!!!..THEY ALL SING AMAZING!!!..YOUR JUST JEALOUS!!!
One of the worst episodes of Lost ever.
Libby is dragged away from Hurley. Hurley pays $100K to talk to her. Hurley asks her on a date and she says “Sure! I’m a voluntary patient!” Weeeeeeak.
Lost is Lost. Hope it finds it’s way before finale.
Couldn’t disagree more. Loved the Hurley episode, to me this show keeps getting better and better.
Don’t want it to end, but it is for the best.
One of the greatest original stories ever told on television. In my opinion.
Original? Maybe Lost began that way. Now it’s boiling down what is essentially good versus evil. I think Carnivale did that better seven years ago…
I disagree, it seems like the writers are just trying to answer questions. Desmond going around gathering oceanic passengers to “discover” that something is “different or not right.” The series should have lasted for four years to end on a high note, that’s out the door. With each episode I lose more and more interest; I’ll still watch but as of right now I think Damages is by far or as you put it “the greatest original stories ever told on television” (Season 1 mainly). Don’t get me wrong Lost started off great but it’s ending poorly.
Ummmmmm… wasnt this the episode that aired last week?
DeeRice, that was last week’s episode.
I agree with Silk, the show is amazing and it is wrapping up nicely.
I’ve been a big Glee fan ever since the pilot first aired, but I have to say, the series is starting to jump the shark with the Madonna episode. While Sue had a lot of funny/snarky dialogue, the story seemed driven by wanting to do Madonna songs vs. by characters, and the relationships are getting muddy and unfocused. I don’t watch the show for the musical numbers. I watch because I care about the characters. If that goes away, I’ll tune out.
That’s interesting b/c I thought last night was one of the best yet. It was definitely one of the darkest of all the episodes, supported in particular by the cinematography. In fact I can’t recall a better recent job of conveying a tone through cinematography/lighting on a TV show. I thought last week’s episode was one of their worst so it’s good to see them bounce back (at least in my opinion). The inherent problem Glee has, however, is what you highlighted above, in that it’s melodrama to the nth degree which eventually is going to lead to ludicrous character plotlines and might tune out the audience. The same thing happened on Nip/Tuck. I really like Glee, but it’s going to take some serious creativity to keep it going beyond a season or two without going completely insane. Plus there’s the high school format issue where sooner or later kids have to start graduating. And it’s a very expensive show to produce already. We’ll see what happens.
What a good time to see it on HULU or on the web
And so it starts, with the heat that Glee started with there is no way its going to be allowed to go on.
We build and build and praise and then Destroy. Whether the first 13 were just that good or the back 9 doesn’t appeal. Glee as a show is in for the regulation deflating of ego. Some shows get a season, maybe two…Lost, Desperate housewives, Ugly betty, but America cannot love you long time, we are on to the next and not due to anything other than that’s just how we do it.
Glee survived even a studio that was not sure, media buyers shaking their heads, TV Journalists who hated it on sight and came around after really looking at Glee for what it is, a bit of fluff about high school and the false perfection we all sought while there. Glee is too GAY, Glee is not for men! Those kids can’t sing, they are auto tuned. Nice and for the few that enjoy what all that adds up, you should be ashamed !
Meanwhile two and half men is a big long term hit with the same stories that start with eye candy and then the smart less attractive brother vs the supposedly more attractive chick magnet brother and look there is this kid then some more eye candy..rinse and repeat.
So these ratings for Lost seem to indicate that there are actually people out there who watched the show for over 5 seasons and now that it’s just a few weeks from ending, bailed on the show? Perhaps tivo or online viewing could explain it?
I can’t imagine how the hell anyone could suddenly choose now to stop watching Lost.
