EXCLUSIVE: Studios seem to hate spending money on development lately, but can they resist a Sacha Baron Cohen comedy? Baron Cohen and writers Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel started pitching a comedy to studio presidents yesterday. They hit four places Tuesday and will finish today. Berg, Schaffer, and Mandel, the Seinfeld writer/producers who are now the executive producers of Curb Your Enthusiasm, get a ton of money for movie jobs. So this will be a whopping deal if a studio bites. Schaffer was one of the writers on the Baron Cohen comedy Bruno. Mandel’s script work on the wife-swapping baseball film The Trade has Warner Bros hoping to make the film with Ben Affleck. The trio’s last credited movie collaboration was EuroTrip and The Cat in the Hat. WME is selling the comedy, details of which I’ll divulge as soon as I get a coherent logline.

the crap factory turns it up a notch.
ugh.
The TV-pitch process is set up to fail. If I was spending stockholder funds on TV shows I would ask anyone pitching me this question: all the show can do is maintain loyalty AFTER it is sampled so, before you tell me how great yours is and since consumers have, literally, millions of options to choose from, how are you going to make me confident that it will generate high levels of sampling? (And don’t tell me that’s not your job since getting sampling is the first step in the process and the existing promotional strategy doesn’t work, which is the primary reason thata content fails.)
No kidding. They are responsible for EuroTrip AND The Cat in the Hat!! WOW!! They sure sound like great filmmakers. Did they also have anything to do with Furry Vengeance? That would just make it too good.
Love how SECRETIVE the log line is! As if someone can rip it off and make a film like Sacha does? Oh Hollywood, its so cute how seriously you take yourself when the rest of the world could give two _____. DANCE FOR ME ENTERTAINER – DANCE!
I’m sure a studio will bite on this project and it will make a ton of $$ at box office and after – I mean – who else in this town makes comedy outside of Sandler, Apatow, and Todd Phillips? That’s right – you guessed it kids – NO ONE. Plus Sacha is a masterful marketer that does the studios work for them – he’s worth every cent at this stage in the game – not sure about the other three hacks though.
Berg, Mandel, and Schaffer are crazy talented. Their produced feature credits aren’t great, but those of us who actually work in this business know feature credits don’t tell your whole story.
I mean, these guys basically ran Seinfeld before they were 30. Now they run Curb with Larry David. Schaffer writes and directs every episode of the FX Series The League.
All that being said, since when is going out with a pitch news?
What is wrong with you people? SBC is hands down the most original voice in comedy over the last ten years. Mandel, Berg, and Schaffer are responsible for some of the very best, most famous Seinfeld episodes, and have a major hand in Curb, which is currently the best comedy on TV. So much jealously, my god…
I thought Eurotrip was hilarious. Bruno as well. This could be sidesplitting. Or totally flop. These guys take big risks. Cat in the Hat stunk. But most of their stuff was hilarious.
Berg, Schafer and Mandel are talented as is Sacha, but to buy this pitch (whatever it is) will cost a studio MILLIONS, and as much as i would like to see a studio buy this, it’s not likely to happen. Studios just dont want to take the risk. Then again Universal did buy Diablo Cody’s non-take on SWEET VALLEY HIGH for $4 million.
I heard during one of the pitches, someone smeared pen ink all over the head of the studio’s hands… That can’t be good for business.
