EXCLUSIVE:Potzdamer Platz is shaping up as to be the next film that Tony Scott will direct. He has Javier Bardem, Jason Statham and Mickey Rourke circling–along with three financiers–for a drama about two soldiers in a New Jersey-based crime family who try to expand internationally.
By the time the picture pulls together its financing and distribution for a fall start, it will probably have a new title. Potzdamer Platz refers to a train station and bustling commerce center in Germany, and I’m told the venue is being changed to Puerto Rico.
I’d heard that in addition to that trio of thesps, Scott was hoping to coax his Crimson Tide star Gene Hackman into starring. I’m told by insiders that’s not going to happen, which likely means that Hackman—who last starred in 2004’s Welcome to Mooseport—is content writing books and isn’t eager to return to the screen.
Scott and his Scott Free banner have been working on Potzdamer Platz since the script was acquired in 2000. The script by Buddy Giovinazzo has been rewritten by the Sexy Beast team of David Scinto and Louis Mellis. The film is being sold by CAA’s Film Finance Group. While word is that Relativity and Lionsgate are among the interested parties, 20th Century Fox gets first crack at the picture, because Scott Free is based there. The other financiers in the mix are Metropolitan, Sammy Hadida’s company which was involved in Scott’s True Romance, Inferno, and QED International are circling along with Relativity for the $38 million budget drama.
Scott, who most recently completed the runaway train drama Unstoppable with Denzel Washington and Chris Pine for Fox, has long held Potzdamer Platz close to his heart and brought it up for years in junket interviews along with other passion projects that include a remake of the Walter Hill-directed Warriors. Looks like Scott is finally going to get this one before the cameras

Hey Tony Scott,
Do whatever it takes and get Gene Hackman back on the screen. Throw some more money at him!!
How come no one has commented on the fact that Tony Scott just directed a shitbox of a remake called the taking of pelham 123 and is now directing what will probably be another shitty movie with such a similar plot!?
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge T. Scott fan but I think he has fallen off, just like my other favorites, MANN & STONE. I think its the end of an era for this generation of directors
Great headline – “Scott plots Potsdamer Platz.” Very alliterative.
Tony Scott is the man. And a ‘mensch’ to boot. Don’t hate on him “Curious.” The guy is also responsible for the epicly awesome MAN ON FIRE, CRIMSON TIDE and SPY GAMES…
Don’t forget TOP GUN. THE HUNGER. ENEMY OF THE STATE.
You speak of Scott like he’s great. He ain’t anything special.
I echo Mike’s comments, from another Mike: I would love to see Hackman have one more go at a dramatic role! I shudder whenever I remember that ‘Mooseport’ is his last film to this day (a movie I’ve avoided based purely on buzz, and that I don’t want it to tarnish the otherwise stellar impression I have always had of Hackman — perhaps Hackman himself was disillusioned by the experience?). Then again, maybe it’s better that Gene avoids Tony Scott these days, as well…
If I remember correctly, that runaway train vehicle used to be called, shockingly, RUNAWAY TRAIN, and it was written by Mark Bomback. I adore Bomback, but it was a crappy script and I saw Forrest Whitaker in the older guy role, Denzel is just too….well, Denzel-ish. Don’t have high hopes for that one.
in other news, javier bardem will be starring as joe camel in an r-rated animated feature slated for a fall 2011 release.
Hello? This sounds like a winning formula
Jersey mob + these actors + Tony Scott = hit film
My advice: keep the special effects and cinematic tricks on the low key side. Make this closer to The Sopranos than Man Of Fire.
The Scott Bros. Tony smiles. The other doesn’t.
sad that Hackman isn’t in more movies, he still has it in spades
‘Potsdamer Platz’ is a square in Berlin — the Berlin Film Festival has it’s center there. Because of traffic intensity, the first continental traffic lights were installed there in the early 20ies. After second world war, the area was cleared — the Berlin wall was running through the historic square. After the wall came down it was one of the biggest redevelopments in downtown Berlin.
Agree totally about missing Gene Hackman, one of the last of the real deals in film acting. Somebody get his “The Apostle” or “Gran Torino” already. Wouldn’t it be awesome to have Eastwood direct him?
Not to spread (or start) rumors, but I can’t help but wonder whatever happened to Gene Hackman. One bad movie isn’t enough to sour a veteran actor like him. He’s made his share of stinkers over the years. I worry that there may be health issues that are keeping him off-camera and no one wants to fess up. Writing novels? Anyone can ghost write. Simpler to keep up the illusion of activity that way. Those of us with seniors in our lives understand how the mental processes can slow down, literally overnight.
Tony Scott? Wish him well. Glad to see he finally gets to make his movie. Go, Tony!
Buddy G! Big fan of “Combat Shock” in the 80s.
Why/how did Buddy G start doing so much directing work in Germany?
That is all.
Tony Scott Wants Gene Hackman for “Potsdamer Platz” Film…
?
The spelling in the headline, Potsdamer Platz with an ‘s’, is the correct one. Unless the film was called Potzdamer Platz with a ‘z’ to make it, you know, out there and funky. I wonder if that was the chosen title to try to get funding from the various German subsidy bodies. Maybe Scott will end up eventually shooting in London and it’ll be called Trafalgar Square!
Tony Scott is a hack.
Michael Mann is still in his element.
I read this script months ago and it sucks – they have been trying to find financing for years on this project since Tony is very passionate about it. It is a waste of money.
The script is dated April 1st, so whatever you read is an old version. I’ve read it and it is good.
Sexy Beast is a great movie so if the writers still have it this one could really fly. It’d be great if Hackman did bite and I’d love to see Scott get a crack at Warriors too.
Just as a side note, the script is also based on Buddy Giovinazzo’s original novel (No Exit Press), which is a good read. The possible change of venue from Berlin is a pity.
Looks like this is FINALLY coming together
Hello? This sounds like a winning formula
Jersey mob + these actors + Tony Scott = hit film
I dont really like the idea of Jason Statham in it because since crank he does not come off as a serious actor to me.
My advice: keep the special effects and cinematic tricks on the low key side. Make this closer to The Sopranos than Man Of Fire.I also would love to see Victor Gojcaj from taking of pelham 123 in this.
I think Potzdamer Platz have Al Pacino and Victor Gojcaj because the movie about Mob. Tony Scott never made a movie with Al Pacino so far. It will help out Pacino and get him in more movies. Like Al need help. When they said Potzdamer Platz about Jersey mob. I was like no Al Pacino in it.
Is Potzdamer Platz ever going to get made? It been over year when I last post on here. If I was Tony Scott. I would start making this movie in 2012. I really want Tony to cast Victor Gojcaj in Potzdamer Platz. I would like to have few big time actor in this and few unknow like Victor. Anyone have any news about if Tony Scott going to make this movie?
