EXCLUSIVE: Now that Marvel Studios and director Joe Johnston have set Chris Evans to play the title role in The First Avenger: Captain America, the other roles have begun to fall into place. Sebastian Stan is about to be fill the role of Bucky, the sidekick who fights side by side with the shield-throwing superhero. Stan is best known for Gossip Girl and he just completed the Darren Aronofsky-directed Black Swan and the Todd Lincoln-directed The Apparition. He also was just seen playing the nemesis in Hot Tub Time Machine. Studio confirmed Stan will be in the film in a deal that has multiple options, but there is no confirmation on whether Bucky transforms into Winter Soldier, as is the case in the Marvel Comics version. Marvel is also close to setting the female lead role of Peggy, and recently tested Keira Knightley, Alice Eve and Emily Blunt for that role.

Bucky? Peggy? Are there any black people in this movie, Beav?
lol… yeah, Marlon Wayans as Bucky.. Niecy Nash as Peggy and introducing 50 Cent as Captain America! Seriously? Ever read the comics?
That was funny….lol that’s like me asking any puerto ricans in the movie? Could u imagine Captain America 5’5″? no chance! Lol just for the record, I am PR
I’m Puerto Rican and I’m 6 foot. My brother is 6’2. All my cousins, and friends who are PR are all over 5’8.
The shortest person I know is my Italian best friend who is 5’4.
Try again.
Also, casting for diversity purposes is foolish. Don’t make a character Black or Latino just because. You follow the source material because the source material has fans. Its the reason why the film is being made.
So – you’re saying I should reconsider casting John Cho in that remake of Malcolm X?
If the reverse were true, where they would not cast a white guy in a role meant in the source material for another ethnic group- I might actually buy that. But, that’s not reality. They often cast white guys to black roles intended for people of color.
It’s set in 1940 something which is studio codeword for people of color don’t exist
I hope Captain America kicks some American Nazi sympathizer ass! I wanna seem him take down Prescott Bush, Errol Flynn, Walt Disney….
Does there have to be a black person in every movie? Jesus dude…
Teddy,
Are movies a reflection of life..?? The question should be: how can you make a movie that doesn’t reflect the fabric of life..?? Especially one set in America where people of color — of ALL colors — have been the very essence and foundation of the nation from its very inception…fabricated revisionist history books notwithstanding.
And the trolling begins…I really hate that this site got popular…
groan…god forbid a movie be cast without cynically filling slots with race/sex/gender approved choices so that some white liberal can feel better
black people? Where the hell is Cap’s bro The Falcon?
Jon,
You know damn well they are going to attach their token black guy after the important roles have been filled and they got a couple thousand dollars left on the $150 million budget…and you know damn well, it’s either going to be a comedian or a rapper…and you know damn well there is no point in even getting angry anymore over the racist unfairness that is the Hollywood tentpole…You know damn well that outside of Denzel and Will Smith, there is no other black actor/actress headlining big budget movies and instead of the producers of this town developing new fresh black talent like they are Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattison and Shia and Megan Fox and etc etc or did with Orlando Bloom, Jude Law, Colin Ferell etc etc, they would rather give 50 year old Denzel a Samurai sword and chap lips to be an action star!!!
To be fair, Samuel L. Jackson often succeeds in lead roles, and in fact will likely appear in Captain America.
And as for younger stars — well, Columbus Short is starting to get a bunch of roles. I agree there’s a massive disparity though, hard to deny that.
If black actors brought in green money, they would cast every role as black. The fact that blacks actually make, you know, black films, even though Tyler Perry sucks, is because black go to theaters. Do you see movies with full-on Asian or South American or Indian casts? No. But Jet Li will always make money, or a Bollywood actor will present at the Oscars, because those countries will support/watch.
It’s that simple. Also, overseas audiences don’t want to watch black people. That’s what the numbers show you. It’s that simple. It would be “racist” if Will Smith’s movies consistently made money, yet they did everything in their power not to make them.
No movies with full-on Asian or Indian (dot) casts? You are kidding, right?
Bollywood by sheer number makes more movies than Hollywood.
“Asian” film production – Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Thai, et al – is also huge.
Wander out of your own narrow little neighborhood and you’ll see video stores in the US still doing okay renting these films.
Both of you are right, to a certain point.
Columbus Short is actually really good, but he looked about 10 years older in Armored than he did in Cadillac Records (which he was amazing in)
The only young black actor I can see making a splash in the next decade, SO FAR, is Jaden Smith. The kid’s got chops and the right pedigree.
I would love to see one of these CW shows get a solid black actor on them. That would be nice. The kid on 90210 just ain’t cutting it.
But for Captain America? Really, Jon… use your head.
Columbus Short unfortunately got his mouth busted pretty bad in a fight. The pics online a gruesome… I have never seen an injury like that in my life.
well… shit.
jamie fox is one of the biggest and may I say the best…and I am a white boy
There are African American characters in Cap’s world. The Falcon, Black Panther, Luke Cage (if they appear as Avengers). Ummm…War Machine…
True they are in Cap’s world but do your reserch. This movie is mostly an origin movie. If you know that story then you know that it’s Cap, Bucky and Peggy. Red Skull as a bad guy. However Sam Jackson will apper in this movie as Nick Fury and start the Avengers. There are supposed to be around 7 movies in total. I believe 3 origins and 4 recent day. People need to get facts straight before shouting out raceism
as I mention below- the history of cap america is actually more complicated than you say. but one would actually have to be a comic book geek like myself to know that history. so my advice to you is to do the same.
here’s a bit of that history, with a character now a part of what is called the Young Avengers team.
“Patriot (Eli Bradley)”
“The second Marvel Universe character to use the name Patriot debuted in Young Avengers #1 (April 2005): Eli Bradley, grandson of Isaiah Bradley, the black Captain America. Isaiah had received his powers (in the limited series Truth: Red, White & Black) as part of an early Super Soldier Serum experiment tested on African-American men in an attempt reproduce the formula lost after being used to turn Steve Rogers into Captain America. Eli’s mother was conceived before Isaiah’s involvement with the experiment, however, so Eli could not have inherited his grandfather’s powers genetically.”
Thematically bringing up ideas like the experiments on AAs in the early part of the 20th Century. So, the history of Cap America is more complicated than what peo here are describing of the comic book.
Great points akaison….was about to point out the very same thing! Marvel does not necessarily need to recast Cap or Bucky to have diverse cast! While some people have been upset over the “re-writing” of Cap’s history to include the Black Captain America, it is actually far more closer to real life when African-Americans were frequently used as guinea pigs for medical expirements before being used on while Americans. Marvel can and should include this aspect of Cap’s origins in the movie.
Yeah, Jon!! How ’bout Isaiah Washington as Captain America…strike a blow with the mighty shield of Diversity!!! Really? Really. This is why you gotta be crazy to argue with liberals. Its like trying to play chess with your dog.
What about Baber Shop? I didnt see any white folks in that one, how about The Friday movies? Nope, no Cracka’s in that flick either. Let’s leave the racial knee jerking to Sharpton, Jackson and other politicians!
Troy Garity was in Barbershop. He is white. His mom is Jane Fonda.
Is this going to be produced by Stratton Leopold of MI-2 fame? Nice of him to try a relative newcomer.
Actually no there really shouldn’t be that many persons of color, Cap begins in before the US enters World War II, the US in its military was very much keeping white and people of color separate.
Who wants black people in movies, Jon?
r u all crazy ur arguing if he should be black, the guy was a blond white guy u cant make him black in the movie. its not racist its the truth u dont change the original its like making ol’ yeller a begeall
In the comic book, the first Captain America was actually black, but that’s a long story regarding the history of the character. They recently had a story arc about that issue.
The first captain america in the comic book is actually a black dude. Or the first person given the super soldier formula, but that’s me being enough of a geek to know the story.
Maybe the Red Skull is African American aka Black? The Falcon, probably for the 2nd movie, is definitely AA aka Black.
To the above comment, I hope not… j/k:D
Yeah, how come no black people? I just don’t understand why black people can’t be in every movie, even when the origins of the comic illustrate the characters are white. Look dude, they can do black characters for Captain America’s team when they do a White Fat Albert, k? Jesus.
LOL I agree!
Dude, don’t you get it: You CANNOT do “America” WITHOUT Black people, without Native Americans. That animal does not exist. What..?? You think white people just showed up, said “poof!” and it all came into existence..?? WTFU!!
lol that’s basically what happened
what kind of asinine, racist comment is that, JON. To be black, does the name need to be Letron or Shontelle– you idiot.
Why not pick Mike Vogel for that role. He is better looking AND a better actor than Sebastian Stan. He was in the running for the lead but isn’t good enough for a supporting role? COME ON!!! Another bumbled casting on this film.
I had the great pleasure of working with Sebastian on NBC’s “Kings.” He is a class act and an incredibly talented actor. This is just the beginning for him, and he deserves all the success that is coming his way.
yea its nice to finally have bucky cast along skull and cap. As for stan i dont know his work. But i hope he will do well for bucky. I too think they will probably want to do the whole winter solider thing to for the character. Why waste the character for just the first cap film and ww2. And if he has a multi picture deal, it will probably be for cameo roles and larger roles. The best thing would be is to go the classic comics and see both cap/bucky die in the climax of the first film. Then we get a cameo appearance in the avengers of a masked hitman no one knows who it is. Which then leads to him being bigger threat in cap sequel.
Captain America IS a sidekick, as long as he’s played by Chris Evans.
Keira Knightley has been in three worldwide box office smashes (“Pirates…”) and was Oscar nominated for Best Actress (“Pride & Prejudice”). Did she really test to be a third-fourth lead in this?
uhhh yes? you can’t just stick any girl in there and expect her & Chris is mesh on-screen. you sort of need chemistry
she probably did. ‘cuz she can’t open a movie.
I couldn’t agree more with Mr. Rod. It amazes me that we live in the most diverse country in the world, yet Hollywood continues to whore out the most boring and uniteresting people on the face of the earth. I love how hollywood always claims to be looking for new talent yet they pump out the same boring people.
I agree with u.
Hollywood studios don’t develop talent. They use existing talent. They don’t take risks on unknowns, that’s not their business model. When there are more stars of all races that have grown up through the system we’ll see more diversity at the top, but don’t expect the studios to go looking for anyone.
I am pretty sure that Joe Johnston should not be allowed to direct any more movies.
With the start date getting quite close, these deals are going to be made at lightning speed
Another sign of how lopsided this industry is for actresses vs. actors. Here you have yet another tentpole movie starring a mid level actor (Evans) and his sidekick (a virtual unknown). And in the role of the love interest and at best third lead, you have potentially either a global star like Keira Knightley or a Golden Globe nominated actress in Emily Blunt.
Previously, it was global star Natalie Portman playing a supporting actress to a complete unknown Chris Hemsworth in THOR.
You literally have bonafide star actresses, with multiple huge movies under their belts and global brands, playing second and often third fiddle to completely unproven, unknown actors.
I’m not sure why exactly these actresses would take these roles – it can’t be the money as Marvel doesn’t pay well. And it can’t be the quality of the role – it’s a superhero movie. So I guess it’s just the best of a bad set of options, I suppose.
Tough town.
I know nothing about Sebastian Stan, but based on the picture here at least, he has a very Kirby face.
If you remember when this whole MARVEL world got rolling with IRON MAN, Oscar Nominated Terrance Howard was the first person cast. Even before Robert Downey Jr. Also, BLADE, played by bad ass Wesley Snipes is the only Marvel character to have his own trilogy of films, besides Spider-Man, who is the most popular comic book character in the world. So if Marvel would make a movie, with a Black Lead, based on a character most people never heard of, anyone gripping now should shut up. Marvel knows their stuff.
don’t know why you’re all getting your panties in a bunch. last movie this director made was Wolfman. You’re all wasting your breath. The studio is wasting its money. And Marvel has another DOA in the works. If Joe Johnston was a stock I’d mortgage the house to short him.
Why is it so hard to find Captain America? Do a Captain American Contest to find him. And this thing about race and characters is stupid. I don’t care if there is a chinese, puerto rican, mixed, I just want a tall, fit, athletic, Captain America. Plump lips, and a clumsy wit about him like Christopher Reeves in Superman. It’s so easy that a cave-chick can do it. I would love to be part of that search. So, if you need help finding him-call me.
Keira Knightley doesn’t get big lead roles because she doesn’t deserve them. Yes, she was IN pirates, but the box office draw was and is Johnny Depp – Keira was nothing special and didn’t really matter. You could replace her in sequels with little difficulty.
Academy Awards are always nice, but they don’t equate to box office success – and box office draw is the sole determining factor in big-hollywood casting and payouts.
Excluding the Pirates series, Knightley hasn’t even been in a successful film since 2003 when she played a minor role in Love Actually.
What successful movies has she been in since 2005?
The Duchess – $13.8M (weak performance)
The Edge of Love – $28.6K (FAIL)
Silk – $1.1M ($20M budget = FAIL)
Atonement – $50.9M (break even)
Domino – $10.1M ($50M budget = FAIL)
Pride & Prejudice – $38.4M (success)
The Jacket – $6.3 (FAIL)
This is all post Pirates and her emergence as a “superstar” – except she doesn’t actually make money so nobody is going to throw down a huge payday for her – she’s not worth the investment.
Ditto Natalie Portman. The only successful movies she’s involved in are the ones with OTHER box office draws. Her big lead – V for Vendetta was five years ago. Her most recent “big picture” was bolstered by Dustin Hoffman but still failed at the B.O. – and deservedly so. Portman was more wooden than the toys.
If and when they bring in big auds they’ll bring in big salaries, but not a frame before.
the president is black, isn’t that enough? just kidding! Would definately like to see a black superhero. Even though Hancock was a little bit of a mess I did like that about the film.
Did you see the covenant ????? Wiiiitttcchhhyyyy!!!! need i say more?
Cap being black in the 1940s doesn’t make any more sense than Will Smith in WILD WILD WEST, and we all saw what a good idea THAT was. (When accused of being a racist foe questioning the casting, Robert Conrad pointed out that at least the tv version had a real dwarf, instead of an actor on his knees!) There are plenty of black characters in the strip, so stop being asinine. (They’ve already turned Nick Fury black, and nobody cared one way or another (it made sense in a modern setting, so there was no reason to question it- incidently, the Fury character should be in this, but I suspect they’ll rewrite it so it’s his father or something). As pointed out, Marvel has never shied away from black characters in their other movies (and Blade is clearly NOT a “token sidekick”) If somebody wants a black superhero THAT badly, start pressuring Marvel for a BLACK PANTHER movie (which could really kick ass if they kept true to Kirby’s original conception of the character, a non-superpowered hero who’s trained himself to be smarter and more capable at everything).
I think they based Fury on the Ultimate version of the Avengers. In that version he’s black. I think they may be basing the movie avengers on the ultimate version of the avengers.
Black Panther, like a numberof other movies, has been a work in progress for a while. Wes;ey Snipes was interested in it prior to getting in trouble witht he IRS. Reginal Hudlin, President of BET and Black Panther writer, has collaborated with Marvel to create the Black Panther animated series. Currently, it is being shown in Australia but I am hoping tey start showing it here sooner rather than later. Previews and stills look great – check it out on YouTube.
Where’s the Falcon.(the other side kick)
Since, race is an issue lol!
I’m PR also and black. F that race bullshit. Read the comics douche bags! White, black, Latino, quit making everything about race. Just go pay your 10 bucks and enjoy!
You must be one of those white-black people, not a black-black person…you aint black-black like i am…you like white-black, like Carlton Banks or Bryant Gumbel or some shit.
And please dont respond to this in some snooty ivy-league prose because im educated but dammit, i like actin ignant sometimes.
IT WILL ALWAYS BE ABOUT RACE AS LONG AS DIFFERENT RACES EXIST
Well… to those “honestly?” seeking racial diversity in a Captain America movie… you all are gonna have to see the end after the credits (Sgt. Fury) will be popping his head in to briefly converse with Cap about the “Avenger Agenda”… Also, if the first one is good and sequel worthy, you may get the chance to see Cap’s first PCP(Politcally Correct Partner) “The Falcon”… Will Smith could pull it off!!! He’d look “Bad Ass” in the Falcon’s costume!! ‘Nuff Said!
Sorry folks… did forget to agree with cst’s statement above mine.. Yeah, the Black Panther would be a good movie, and they have who I’d consider the one of the Best Actors for the role!! Djimon Hounsou would probably pull it off well! Why stick with Marvel though for the Black Hero… Why not make a movie of the “First” Black Hero to headline his own comic!! Black Lightning.. Just a thought…
Black Panther would be difficult to make considering his country considers itself the equal of any western country, including the US, in terms of technology. They often come to blows with the West because of it.
In the mid-1990s John Singleton was developing the Luke Cage movie with Marvel, but that was several mergers ago.
