EXCLUSIVE: Wizards of Waverly Place showrunner Peter Murrieta was brought in for the pilot, which he rewrote. Then he served as executive producer/showrunner on the Selena Gomez-starring comedy’s first 3 seasons. That led to ratings success as well as the first best series Emmy Award for the Disney Channel last year in the children’s program category. So why is Murrieta leaving?
Well, Wizards, created by Todd J. Greenwald, has wrapped production on Season 3. There’s no decision yet on a Season 4 pickup – but a Disney Channel spokeswoman confirmed to me that, if the show is renewed, Murrieta won’t be part of it. “Peter’s creativity won an Emmy award (for the show),” the spokeswoman said. “We are in open discussions with him on other Disney Channel projects.”

Wish him well but, raise of hands, is there anyone who reads this site that follows this show?
i don’t watch but certainly follow. one of disney’s workhorses.
but murrieta’s much bigger than the mouse house. he’s got a stout future ahead of him.
FAAAAC! if WOWP comes back at all it will be pure SUCK! without Peter and his Twitter happy ways. He was good to us. He always looped us in and live Twitter along airing of the episodes. SO FUN!
I hope you make some new show that is all yours wtih Disney like it reads above. I miss you ;_(
Sandra and the WOWP Twitter army!
Having worked with Peter both on a series and in development I can say there is not a nicer guy to work with. Don’t know the story behind his exit but wish him well in his next endeavor.
What difference does it make if one watches the show? It’s one of the biggest hits on one of the biggest kids networks so a big executive move like this is news, pure and simple. The Disney Channel is one of the most profitable networks on television, more than many networks that cater to adult audiences.
Peter has some real talent yes, but he is also bridge-burner extraordinaire who keeps a huge chip on his shoulder at all times. His attitude has made enemies of people who probably wouldn’t have gone out of their way to trouble him otherwise. There is so much talent in this town, why work with people who hold endless grudges on non-issues and take it as a deep personal insult if you don’t always treat them like they’re THE smartest, funniest and most gifted person in the room – and defer to their opinion 100% of the time. Cooperation is a talent as well.
I’m sure he’ll do fine. He will find new people who need his talent but don’t yet know what a prickly character they’re going to end up dealing with…
peter is a brilliant man, there is no doubt about this, also he is difficult to work with, again no doubt.
the question is, if his hard to work w/personality is what made the show good?????
in the 60′s painters could be found in their own shit lying on the street and still make it.
that is no longer true.
i think peter is super smart, also super dumb, I wish him all the best.
and hope i work for him again.
he deserves a good life, he should be hired by the smartest person out there.
nothing truer could be said.
