EXCLUSIVE: Green Hornet is moving its release date from December 22nd to Martin Luther King Weekend, which is January 14, 2011, so it can be converted into 3D.
Sony is using the term “3D enhancements”. (Because no visual effects on the film have been done yet by Sony Imageworks, which is just getting into post-production on it. So the studio says it’s not a 3D conversion but an enhancement, and there’s already “great depth and scope” to the shots from director Michel Gondry, who has experience with 3D videos.) There have been rumors of problems with the comic book caper film, with some rival studios calling reporters to claim it’s unreleasable, but Sony Pictures Entertainment Vice-Chair and marketing/distribution kingpin Jeff Blake is denying. He says, if anything, Sony isn’t backing away from the film but, rather, “doubling down. We’re investing more in the film to have it 3D. We’ve seen part of the movie. We love it. We believe in it. Whoever is spreading these rumors has not seen it. We’re going to finish Green Hornet in 3D and take 9 months to do it right.”
He says the reason that MLK weekend was chosen is because the studio released Paul Blart: Mall Cop to a big number and now that date is lucky for everyone. Further, he says Sony wanted to steer clear from all the 3D films coming in the Christmas season, including Tron, Yogi Bear, Harry Potter, and Fox, which may make 3D conversions of its Gullivers Travels and its Narnia 3. “It is purely a capacity issue. There simply are not enough digital screens up and running within the theater system to juggle that number of titles.”

I’ve been predicting that this movie will be a dud for months. I don’t know a single person excited to see a GREEN HORNET movie, much less one starring Seth Rogen. Now they’ve moved it out of a prime Christmas spot (where it would have failed miserably) and are converting it to 3D so they can charge extra money… making sure that it makes as much cash as possible before word of mouth gets out on this turkey.
It is practices like this that will KILL the 3D gimmick long before Cameron has a chance to release AVATAR 2… which will probably be in smell-o-vision.
I’m not going to be like everyone else and make fun of Seth for his ridiculous, painful-to-listen-to laugh. He can’t help that. What he can help, is not being such an unbelievable jerk in at least half the interviews he does. He’s example a) of the comedian who just never gets over the chip on his shoulder. He gets upset about people calling him fat, ugly, whatever. Dude — you’re a movie star. Deal with it. Tom Cruise was a sexy symbol, and he dealt with short jokes, Ben Stiller clowning on him for his laugh, so many things. You’ve been working in the industry since you were teenager. Act like you’ve been around for longer than three years. Confidence, dude, confidence.
I too smell a stinker.
The January release graveyard of Hollywood. First epic bomb of 2011!
Good god, man. January hasn’t been a dead zone in over a decade. Movies are making a ton of money during that time period now.
PAY ATTENTION.
Isn’t Sony the company that’s lecturing everyone else on the “butchering” process that is conversion?
Ugh. Hacks.
gee whiz. why can’t a movie just be a movie anymore?
uh good one. it’s jay chow in the movie and you’ve got a picture of stephen chow. and if anyone wants to say anything racist, how about we all use one photo of say mike tyson to represent blacks and george lopez to represent hispanics.
January=dump, i smell flop, but please convert shitty movies to 3d, it will only make this fad end quicker
January Box Office Releases = start off the New Year with a crap sandwich.
Ummmm. Isn’t that Stephen Chow?
Wrong pic, Stephen Chow is not in this. Jay Chou is Kato. I’d rather see a Chow-directed version than Gondry’s…
There’s a good reason that Stephen Chow dropped out of this Picture last year despite the big bucks being thrown at him… the script sucked.
This has bomb written all over it.
What the fuck? Didn’t these studios learn from the other 3D conversion failures this year? What the hell is going on here?
This is bad news. Sony moved a huge December release to January to convert it to 3-D?!?! Seth Rogen’s Green Hornet is officially DOA.
Disgraceful, considering how low budget, stylish and hip a new Green Hornet could have been. The old TV show retains an urgent, slick quality that could have been great in a remake.
This also a finacial move; if you can move the expenses to 2011 a film on shaky ground ala Shutter Island can recoup them through all streams before the close of the year.
Guess Sony finally has their long awaited sequel to LAST ACTION HERO.
Hahaha…that was a good one.
Does anyone REALLY want to see Seth Rogen in 3-D?! Major pass.
Does anyone Really wants to see Seth Rogen at all?
NO!
Great, Seth Rogen’s scrotum-like face in 3D. Can’t wait for the IMAX release.
Man, I’m excited to see this!
Oh wait, no I’m not. Sorry. Good luck with your little show, Sony!
Seth Rogen in 3D? Gross.
Is anyone really surprised by this move?? Once Rogen was announced as the green Hornet, it sealed this movie’s fate. As a long time Hornet fan this movie belonged in Francis Ford Coppola’s hands as maybe a period piece not a hack stoner such as Rogan.
Yet another bad movie the fans will have to apologize for.
Funny that Joe Carna”ham” is defending this movie…..the A-Team will be a close second!!
It’s obvious Sony moved this Christmas turkey to January because it was going to be dead on arrival. Next, they had to figure what to do with the leftovers and decided “hey, let’s make it 3D!”
It’s lipstick on a pig. Converting a shitty movie to 3D… it’s still a shitty movie. No one cares to see this.
lol the studios are really trying to milk this 3d thing even with movies that arent meant to be in 3d. too bad the theaters upped the prices so high ive eliminated 3d movies altogether.
I call B.S. on why it’s being moved. When I read this movie was scheduled for a Xmas release, I thought there would be a major backlash towards everyone involved, including the studio. Moving it away from Xmas was inevitable.
