It’s milestone time for South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Below is a video taste of tomorrow night’s 200th episode. They are set to make their Broadway debut in March on The Book Of Mormon, a stage musical. Parker and Stone wrote the book and music with Avenue Q’s Bobby Lopez and Parker will direct with Avenue Q’s Jason Moore. Scott Rudin is producing with Anne Garefino. The Broadway move comes as Comedy Central prepares to air the 200th episode of their irreverent comedy series.
The musical deals with two wide-eyed Mormon boys who go on a two-year mission to Third World countries and underprivileged communities, where they try to convert people to join the Mormon faith. After watching them lacerate scores of notable celebrity and faith–every star skewered in the 14 seasons of South Park appear in tomorrow’s 200th episode–my instinct is to fear for the Mormon faithful. Insiders describe the musical as highly subversive and satiric, but with a generous spirit. The theater hasn’t yet been named, but financing is in place and the musical is fully formed after being run through three workshops.
Rudin was producer and Garefino was executive producer on the 2004 feature Team America: World Police, the puppet film that was written by the South Park duo and directed by Parker. While they were making the film, Rudin suggested that Parker and Stone see Avenue Q, the Tony-winning musical that is also done with puppets. The South Park duo stayed in touch with Lopez and Moore and that led to them collaborating on the Broadway-bound musical.
Though they are new to Broadway, Parker and Stone are no strangers to musicals. Their 1999 film South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, featured n Oscar-nominated song, and the film was such a hit with the New York Film Critics Circle that it established its first award for an animated film to honor the picture. The musical is expected to be one of Broadway’s highest profile openings for the 2010-2011 season, and it comes as South Park moves into its 15th season on Comedy Central. Below is teaser for tomorrow night’s 200th episode:
New ‘Man Of Steel’ Television Spot #6

Smartest guys in H-wood. Period.
Does anyone how we can find out when tickets/venue info will become available?
The Catholic Boat… its gonna be headin’ on out today!
Sing along if you know the words!
Oh My!
Try surfin the net, friggin artard.
“… I’m not an artard …”
its not “artard” its “Rtard”. yes i play WoW i should know.
Marc Shaiman used to be Stone and Parker’s go-to guy for musical songs. Was there some sort of dispute among them? I know they rejected his music for Team America, but I wasn’t sure how ‘friendly’ the rejection was.
Parker and Stone didn’t reject Shaiman’s music, the studio did. The most Shaiman would have to complain about is that Parker and Stone didn’t fight hard enough, but the studio was doing that to quite a few projects for similar reasons, so I’m not sure what P&S could’ve done anyway.
They saw “Avenue Q” before they created “Team America,” that’s fer sure. They’ve said as much.
I honestly cannot wait to see this. I’m Mormon, and I love South Park (irony rules). I hope they air this on Comedy Central; I remember asking MnT for another Mormon episode of South Park, but I guess they already had this broadway musical underway before I even asked. And Avenue Q is amazing. The combination is gonna be insane!! Can’t wait!
no dude they already AIRED a mormon episode a while back. and im jewish and south park is my life! irony rulez XP
I like the episode where God tells Satan “I myself am a Buddhist”.
Too funny! I am glad that people of all religions can appreciate a good satire. (Now give me your jewgold!)
Well, not ALL religions appreciate satire…
I know they already aired a Mormon episode. “All About the Mormons”, I think it’s called. That’s why I said I asked them for ANOTHER one. I wanted one that wasn’t about how perfect they all are, cuz as for my family, we’re as demented and un-perfect as it can get. But I love the Joseph Smith medley in the episode.
“Joseph Smith was called a prophet, dum dum dum dum dum.”
And yes, irony is rather amusing, is it not? =]
Pretty sure he said “another.” Try reading before criticizing.
Wow, I really hope you are not using a piece of satire as your entire foundational belief of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints(Mormons). I too am a mormon and what i appreciate about south park is that they make fun of both sides of issues. However I also realize that what is shown is satire and i accept it as that. I know that the mormon episode had bits of factual information that was distorted and stretched for humor’s sake. I know what I believe and it sure wasn’t what was on an episode of south park.
Just wondering, what if (even though Matt and Trey are doing it) it actually comes across portraying Mormon missionaries in a positive light, with comedic value?
Factual?
“I know that the mormon episode had bits of factual information that was distorted and stretched for humor’s sake”
No no, Joeseph Smith was a treasure hunter. You know that gap of time between when he “found” the book of mormon and when he “translated” it? Lizards in hats.
Nice to keep things civil.
so, did you not like, see the end of that episode, razz? the ending is probably very relevant here.
A new LDS social networking and messaging system is in the process of being launched at inzion.com. Come check it out.
I’m Mormon, well, a jack-mormon anyway. This does look awesome! If you didn’t see the Mormon episode, you should. It captured our culture to a tee.
Their first student film was a musical short about Alfred Packer a prospector turned Cannibal! I believe it is still being played in the film building today at the University of Colorado, Boulder…those guys know their stuff. Go buffs.
The First movie they made was “Cannibal the Musical”!
South Park: BLU was a musical indeed. But so was “Cannibal: The Musical!” and “Team America: World Police.” The only non-musical things these guys have done was “Orgazmo” and even that had some musical numbers if I recall correctly.
I would not consider Team America a musical. The puppets did not sing but maybe one song or so in the whole movie and Baseketball is not a musical
Baseketball wasn’t a musical
Baseketball is also David Zucker starring Matt & Trey not directed by them.
Hunter, there was no singing in Orgasmo.
But aside from that you got everything spot on.
There was no musical numbers in Orgasmo or Baseketball, but Trey and Matt wrote and played a couple songs in both films.
BASEketball.
Baseketball wasn’t a musical.
I’ve always appreciated the way both South Park and Family Guy have repeatedly used the whimsical and mood-setting nature of musical numbers to bear in their work.
I mixed two thoughts there.
I’d imagine the public generally appreciates the inclusion of musical numbers in these programs, also.
Dude, don’t even compare south park to family guy. thats just going to far. have you seen cartoon wars? (they are south park episodes)
Wow, thank you for not putting South Park and Family Guy in the same category. I personally hate it when people talk about the two shows like they’re practically the exact same. They couldn’t be more different, in my opinion. Besides, South Park kills Family Guy anyway.
Yes south park and family guy should not be compared to each other because its apples and oranges as far as comedy goes.
It’s funny that an add for the Chunky Bible – a compact version of the NIV Bible – is featured below this article. The funny thing about it is that it states the Bible is the “most read” book. It might be one of the top-selling books of all time, but it definitely isn’t the most read. I think most lukewarm Christians buy the Bible and just leave it lying around the house untouched.
Anyway, congrats to M&T!
Hands down, my favorite song to run to is “America, Fuck Yeah!”
So damn funny. WAY funnier than blame Canada (also damn funny).
There songs crack me up. I look forward to the musical.
I’m going to watch M & T no matter what they do, I believe in them.

I married into a Mormon family and I love South Park so it’s going to be great!!! We just won’t tell my in-laws. lol
I too am a devout Mormon and just adore South Park.
*high five* I was wondering if there were any other Mormons who thought South Park was cool. Everyone at my church think it’s nothing but gross humor and immature language. It looks like this satirical musical will actually have many Mormon fans. Awesome.
Uh, no, you’re not, honestly if that’s the case. But keep trying.
I personally pretty much hate all musicals… with the exception of Matt and Trey. I listen to the soundtracks of south park BLU, cannibal! and Team America regularly, like when doing chores or stuck in traffic. Can’t wait for this new one to come out!
I’m mormon too. I love south park including the episode about mormons. some people take their religion too seriously. See the humor in it, the truth and the satire. it can only do us good to realize the quarks mormons have. besides the creators of south park really pulled their punches, i think they were pretty respectful considered to what they did to Scientology (that was a great episode to). also there is a lot to laugh about in mormon culture, so why not laugh.
this is gonna be the shit! i cant wait to see this musical.
I think Matt and Trey are funny as hell , they should do a cartoon series on team America that would be the best they are great !!! What religion are Trey and Matt ???
Mormon Gangsta’ Rap!
It’s funny cause it’s true.

As a former hostage of Idaho Falls, Idaho I can assure you I will be flying to NYC just to see this show!
If this is anything like Cannibal! The Musical, it’s going to be great.
Irony rules with every fan of South Park because they rip on everyone. Best show ever!
Good to know how many other Mormons out there support South Park. Hilarious show, love how nothing is off limits to Matt and Trey.
i am mormon and i love southpark, is not ironic, its called having a sense of humor!
cant wait to see this!
Just another South Park shout-out from a lifetime “marmin – boy” South Park is a great show whose shocking subject matter belies a good-natured heart. If you’re a Mormon (or indeed a person of ANY faith) and you’re offended by what South Park has done to this point, you’re missing the point.
I’m interested to see what kind of tone the musical embraces. My hope is that it is similar to the Mormon SP episode – insightful and hilarious satire, but with an underlying respect.
Anyway, kudos to the SP crew for a consistently apt show.
Cheers!
They’re genius!
I thought Orgazmo cast Mormons in a pretty positive light. And if you can’t laugh at yourself, smell my finger!
@ All the Mormons who love the SP episodes.
You do realize they are ripping on the very foundation of your cult, ah sorry .. church. The entire episode is about the absurdity of J.Smith and his claims of being a prophet. Guess its easier to laugh with the crowd then take a serious look at the pitfalls of LDS cult.
I grew up never getting those Mormons, but I’ll tell you what, the Mormon church isn’t a cult.. you’d have to have the education of a 3-year old to believe that. And this is coming from a full blooded Catholic (no, I don’t molest kids). All the episodes have a “moral” at the end, and although they satirized Mormons, the message was (as said from “Gary” the Mormon kid in the episode) that he lives a great life and has the Book of Mormon to thank for that, regardless of the “facts”… then he told Stan to suck his balls. Love it.
Nice work on your retarded interpretation, buddy.
don’t turn this into slander the posts have all been good until you Mormons don’t get mad at sp because well sp has made fun of almost every church out there it would be hypocritical to watch the show and thin get mad when they talk about your faith calling the Mormons a colt just shows ignorance on your part but your probably to uneducated about their church to understand how stupid what you just posted was or you used to be Mormon and your pissed off because someone chastised you for not living up to their elevated standard of behavior which would also explain how outlandish your statement was
why do you have to make such ignorant comments about our church? I find that the people who do that never spent one second in one of our meetings to fully understand what we believe. Whether you agree with what we believe or not we raise our children with good morals and decent values so bug off!
