EXCLUSIVE: In a whopping deal coming together quickly, Stephen King, Imagine Entertainment and Weed Road are in discussions to make a screen trilogy and TV series out of King's epic novel series The Dark Tower. Akiva Goldsman will write the script, Ron Howard will direct it, and his Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer will produce with Goldsman and King.
Universal is in talks to acquire a package that included the books, and the attachment of the team behind the Oscar-winning film A Beautiful Mind and The Da Vinci Code. Both Universal –where Imagine is based—and Warner Bros—where Goldsman’s Weed Road banner is housed—have been vying for the project.
The Dark Tower is King’s answer to JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, and the author will get his own screen trilogy. Like Tolkien, King's epic novel series is set in an otherworldly but familiar world, and involves a quest to save the world. The series spanned seven novels that involved Roland Deschain, the last living member of a knightly order of gunslingers who exists in a world that has an Old West feel, but which is infused with magic. He is on a quest to find the Dark Tower, a structure that holds the key to the nexus of all universes. He encounters many allies and enemies along the way, as the world crumbles around him.
The book series was once developed by JJ Abrams and his Lost cohorts Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, but they never cracked it. Goldsman, who has become a prolific producer, was the catalyst for securing the rights from King, and he brought it to Howard and Grazer. It was not immediately evident how large the transaction was, but King has often optioned his works for little or no money upfront, and reportedly he bestowed the rights on Abrams for $19, a number which has significance in the novel series. King is working on an eighth novel, one that doesn't change the ending, but deals with characters and a storyline that falls midway in the series. CAA is working on the deal.

I think I just found my next addiction after LOST!!
Finally! I have been waiting for them to make the books into awesome movies. Now…who would be a good Roland?
I can’t quite put my finger on who could play off Roland…MAYBE, Robert Patrick from T2 with some fixing up….but I think that Regina King from Soutland would make an awsome Susannah…what about Jake and Eddie? I kind of like that guy that played Larry in the STAND for Eddie…would make sense with all of the twinners.
OOOOOoooo a correction…great idea from the guys at the DT conendium or whatever…Jason Lee as Eddie Dean
I also think Gaven Rossdale? Gwen Stephani’s hubby from Bush as FLAGG…Gary Oldman as Marten Broadcloak. OOOOooo or even Robert Downey…plus he would just be a natural for Henry the eminent JUnkie…Donald Sutherland as Jonas…but maybe now it would have to be Keifer…That little kid in all the Johny Depp movies…Freddi…maybe him for Jake or young Roland? or one of the Disney twins? Zack or Cody for Jake?
You know how you just have that image in your head of how that character should look? I have always had one actor in mind, but of course cannot remember his name today. The other is Ian McShane. Rough, but caring. Roland can’t be played by some young pretty boy. He’s got to have character and grit already built in. I have two books to go and can’t wait for this one to become a series. I hope it lives up the book!
I think Vigo Mortensen could be roland. And Al Pacino as the man in black, although hes kind of old. When I’m reading the books I picture Jim from The Office as Eddy but I don’t know if he has the range to do a good job in Drawing of the Three.
Here is who I pictured (although it might be difficult to get this many big names in one flick):
Roland – Hugo Weaving
Eddy – Adrian Brody
Susannah – Beyonce Knowles
Jake – Some kid
Oy – Danny Devito…
Only they probably won’t make them into “awesome” movies. They will most likely make them into shoddy, sub-par, lo-content, hi-budget, big deal, blockbuster pieces of crap; like virtually every Hollywood concoction marketed as adaptations or re-makes. A septiology condensed into a trilogy, does NOT sound promising. No matter how lightly you take yourself as a Dark Tower fan.
since when have movies based on stephen kings books been high budget low content? maybe 1408…. but thats about it. for the most part the movies based oh his books have been brimming with content. obviously they leave out many of the superb details that have kept me a fan of kings books for years and years.. but they still dont hold back much.
What about Stephen Moyer, “Bill Compton” True Blood. Clint Eastwood is Roland, but since that will not happen, I think Moyer is a great choice.
if this were 25 or 30 years ago there would be one and only one choice and thats…Clint Eastwood, he would have made a PERFECT Roland but hes too old now though, I dont think there is anyone that could fit Roland like hes supposed to look
I think Clint should play Callahan.
I always favoured Oliver Hudson for Eddie. I had no one else in particular picked out for other characters, but he is without a doubt my Eddie Dean.
Maybe Jeff Fahey for Roland? Not the greatest actor but he definitely has the “bullshooter” eyes, and who knows the fantastic role could bring out the best in him. Timothy Olyphant is also an excellent choice. He was the only thing that made Hitman watchable.
There’s been some good adaptations, but most Stephen King books that have been adapted to film have been total crap compared to the book. I really, really hope they don’t screw this up.
how about clive owen as roland?
I always sort of pictured him as Clint Eastwood but I guess he’s pretty old now
Same here. What I’d love – beyond all reason, I might add – is to be submersed in the Dark Tower for the next five years. After that, it will be long past time to tackle The Talisman and Black House. Wolf! God pound it!
M O O N spells OMG I can’t believe they are going to do this!
Not saying he’s an untalented director, but in no way is Ron Howard the right person to direct this.
Why not Ron Howard? He directed “Willow” which I think is one of the best fantasy movies out there….
I disagree with you, Ron Howard is one of the best directors out there today. I have enjoyed every movie he has made up to now. I cannot see how they can bring us a complete understanding of the storie and the characters in 3 movies. I hope they don’t mess it up, like they did with so many other King movies. Stephen King is a class act, and when I read his books, it is like he is talking to me….so very natural.
agreed…
EVERY TIME I HEAR ABOUT A NEW RELEASE FROM KING I GET SO EXCITED AND TO HEAR THAT THE DTS ARE GOING TO MOVIE MEAns im going to have a new obssesion wow how are they going to top this one whoo hoo go guys
Clint eastwood and his slew of westerns triggered Kings picturing of roland, slightly. BUt deffinately clint was a muse. Espeically because of the JAke referrence in wastelands..in front of the majestic.
My pic would beVigo Mortenson…roland, eddie dean would be awesome if Adrian brody would do it..but im sure the flick would have to only have one maybe 2 major draws and some subb par actors.
Roland…Vigo
Man in Black…Sam Rockwell
Susanah… Rutina Wesley(true blood-TAra)
Eddie Dean….Joseph MAzello(SLedge from the PAcific)
Jake….Nathan Norton( google him)
My first reaction was “how can they turn this epic series into just 3 films? They gave Harry Potter way more than three and that was shit” Unfortunately they will probably totally cut “The Wizard and the Glass” which was my favorite by far. I would assume they might have flashbacks to it. Also they will probably speed through “The Gunslinger” even though so much enjoyment from this series comes from trying to understand the univers that Stephen King created. It will probably be dumbed way down. I hope not, but what else can ye expect from Hollywood? Say thankya
Wizards and Glass needs to be only in flashbacks( but flashed over all the movies)…but quite a few. How they did Harry Potter gives me hope they can brijng the entire DT world to th fore. But 3 movies will NOT cut it…the Drawing of the Three is its own movie with maybe the Gunslinger as flashbacks. But the last three need their own movie…heck the last one needs TWO…it has two distinct parts. I am not sure Ron Howard can pull it off…JJ Abrahmms was an awsome choice.
ur right 3 movies will never EVER cut it… I DEMAND THE WORLDS MOST EPIC FUCKIN MINISERIES EVER!!!!!!!!!!!! or an epicly long movie for each book
Three movies would never be enough, but if you had read closer you would have noticed the article says three movies AND a TELEVISION SERIES. They just might be able to cover it that way. They should just do the series and with the books, they have seven seasons right there with weekly series and maybe one television movie per scene…there are definaetly enough SK and DT fans to keep that up as long as they do it right and dont slack off. Will need to be prime time one…would be way better than LEGEND OF THE SEEKER….adult content….hell maybe even an HBO series. Then if he managed to finishe the *th book he spoke of…hell SK would have no less than 8 years…could throw in all that DISCORDIA under story he created on his website.
***SPOILER ALERT***
Most definitely, needs to be an HBO series to get in all the character development (quite important to this story overall), violence, demon-sex and Eddie’s naked gunfight at the Leaning Tower…Terry Quinn from LOST would make a great Cort, and Daniel Day-Lewis as Steven Deschain. Gary Oldman as Nort and Carole Kane as Rhea of The Coos…Use “stars” sparingly, ones that can disappear into a role, or otherwise it’s “OMG! It’s Russel Crowe in a cowboy hat!”
good call with daniel day-lewis. great actor
Awesome!! I love this series and totally see the Lost connections..Man in Black anyone? I can’t wait!
OMG. I can hardly wait. But, yeah, who will be Roland? Thirty years ago, Clint Eastwood would have been perfect.
viggo mortensen for Roland…that is my pick for top cast, he would rock.
Viggo Mortensen would be awesome
Michael Biehn would make an ideal Roland.
Hugo Weaving…I think he’d be awesome.
Christian Bale would make an awesome Roland. He’s a great method actor and can play flawed characters brilliantly. I saw elsewhere that Javier Bardem would be a good shout. Not bad considering Roland’s supposed to be a white ‘man with no name’, Native American mix.
As for directors, I agree with some of the other comments: Ron Howard is a good director, but I feel he won’t capture the sheer violence, horror and surreal essence of the story in the same way the likes of J.J. Abrams and Christopher Nolan would. Both those guys really get into the story and under the skin of the characters, depicting them as true as possible to the books.
As for showing Wizard and Glass in flashback only – that’s crazy. That and the Wolves of the Calla would make awesome films by themselves. I really liked Wizard and Glass being at that point in the story, too. We know more about the characters and what they’ve been through by then. Which means we care more and are willing – eager, even – to learn more about Roland’s past.
Three films is understandable, but a bit shortsighted, I feel. I understand that money and time is a factor, but if they made Harry Potter into a successful movie franchise, then it’s possible to do the same for the Dark Tower series. No disrespect to Harry Potter, they were good books and we all know how successful everything Hogwarts has become, but the Dark Tower stories are far greater in my opinion.
I love the Dark Tower novels and they have all the right ingredients to form the best movies of all time. However, unless the creative team who is bringing The Dark Tower to life is the right one for the job, I fear the tower will fall.
The best King books i have ever read. Took me 4 months to get through them all and have been looking for them on visual since i finished the first book. Can’t wait to see them. If they keep to the books and get decent actors it will be as good as green mile and shawshank!!!!
I wish Haley Joel Osment was still young because he’d of made a great Jake. Not a lot of kids have the acting talent like he did at a very young age.
This will suuuuuck. Ron fucking Howard! Are you kidding? That’s worse than the Bad Robot team. Ron Howard has made decent films in the past, but he is totally wrong for this. They need a director with balls.
I just saw the nude fight in Eastern Promises, and although I’m not particularly a Cronenberg fan, it got me thinking about Eddie’s nude gunfight. It needs a Director who is not afraid to show dick and balls on screen, and a studio that wont turn it into the standard American PG-13 bullshit that always gets churned out with these kinds of things.
so fucking awesome!!!
this shall kick so much ass
Yeeeeeeeeeeaaaa kid
This is what I’ve been waiting for. The dark tower books are my favorite stephen king novels by far. the story is amazing. *slides a headshot over to ron howard
Gawd, talk about a talent/property mismatch.
How are they going adequately turn seven novels into three films, particularly the fourth, fifth, and seventh books?
That is my thought too. I bet a lot of the story line gets cut out,and people who have never read the books won’t get it.
That’s my question too. I am worried they will have to cut some important stuff to do it.
I agree. I think it may be possible (but still difficult) to do properly with 4 movies though(all with a running time of about 2h35min). I agree that 4 needs to be it’s own movie and it would be the empire strikes back of the series.
I don’t hate Ron Howard. But I don’t think he’s the filmmaker to do justice to The Dark Tower.
And please NO. Not in 3D.
Come on! Everything is better in 3D.
Anybody concerned about an awesome series like DT in the hands of Goldman? The guy shits the bed on everything he touches…
I look forward to the remake in ten years.
Very, very concerned, Grazer. The guy got handed a brilliant story in I Am Legend, and blew it big time. If Howard had a good script, I think he could do something interesting with it, but no way AG gives him anything more than his usual, mediocre, paint-by-numbers tripe.
“Akiva Goldsman”
NO, FUCK NO!!!
My thoughts exactly.
I don’t know if I can bear to see The Dark Tower get I Am Legend treatment.
Hey, it is what it is. Nobody’s had the balls to take up the project yet, gotta give Goldman SOME credit for that. Otherwise, yeah. Wtf. But i’ll hold my opinions about all this back till I see some casting.
Clint Eastwood or Vigo Mortensen for Roland?
Viggo Mortenson would be perfect! I think at this point, Clint Eastwood may be a little too old.
Can’t think of a better choice than Viggo.
Hugh Laurie. No, seriously.
I’ve been wondering who would be best to play Roland and as soon as you said it, Viggo slotted into my mind’s eye as “tall dark and ugly”. Without somehow putting Eastwood in an anti-aging machine, Mortensen would be the best choice.
I am sorry but you can throw viggo out of your brains there is no way. Obviously clint is the logical choice 20 30 years ago maybe if they do enough wizard and glass he can play the father. It is certainly a hard choice for roland maybe timothy olymphant i have been checking out justified and if he can get the voice down i see roland potential. better than Viggo~!
Eastwood will always be the gunslinger for those of us who read the books as they came out. Doesn’t matter who they put on the screen, my mind will just replace him with Eastwood.
As soon as I read this series I dreamt of it being turned into a movie and the best actor I could come up with for Roland was James Remar… just think about it.
Eastwood was always Roland, for me. But at 80, he may not want to take on such a time-intensive project that would all but take over his life for several years.
Mortenson would be a good choice. He’s a phenomenal actor. He puts everything he’s got into his roles. After all, could anyone imagine another actor as Aragorn?
Viggo is great, but interestingly he wasn’t really known ‘big time’ to the world until after Lord of The Rings. I think they should do the same with the character of Roland. It should not be a star actor – that would ruin it – but someone who has the chops and the right looks to genuinely get it right, like Viggo did in LOTR. I suggest you check out a brilliant British actor I’ve seen by the name of Kevin Howarth – see IMDb. Check out the look – and he plays the main bad guy opposite Wesley Snipes in a supernatural western called ‘Gallowwalker – I think it’s out soon…2010? He’d be great! Let me know what you think.
Clint Eastwood is too old. Viggo would be good. I personally always pictured Roland as Hugh Jackman.
Clint Eastwood is way too old. By the time the last film in the trilogy was made, his pants would be up to his nose.
Oh man this comment made me laugh.
Eastwood would be great as Roland’s father….
Eastwood as Cort would be best imo. The kid from Where The Wild Things Are as Jake. Zoe Saldana as Susannah. I’d like Ed Norton as Eddie but i think he is too old. Maybe Paul Dano or Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Eddie instead. Day-Lewis as Roland. Zach Quinto or Ed Norton as Flagg.
Your ideas are not in perfect sync with mine however i do like your choices
On the contrary, I think that Eastwood would be perfect as Cort. Or even as Pere Callahan, just so that he is involved in the filming of Wolves of the Calla
If you’ve ever seen the new series “JUSTIFIED” you might want to consider Timothy Olyphant for Roland.
I agree totally about timothy olyphant.
you do realize Roland is OLDER and HAGGARD in appearance right?
Not Viggo! He had Aragorn, let Sean Bean be Roland with Viggo playing one of the other roles. Turnabout is fairplay.
Eh, closest suggestion I’ve seen thus far.
I’ve always wanted Vigo for Roland.
Gerard Butler would be a perfect Roland. This may sound odd, but check out the movie Nim’s Island and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
you should lose comment rights for making that suggestion.
AKIVA: IT HAS TO BE VIGGO. IT WON’T WORK WITH ANYONE ELSE
Lance Henriksen as Roland. He’s 70 this year, but he’s how I picture Roland. He’s not too well known, but he’s also got a lot of experience. I think he would be the closest thing to Clint Eastwood perfect as they could get.
This is great news. I am happy to see whatever Ron Howard can do with the movies.
I own the Internets largest unofficial website for these books so the buzz is really picking up over there too.
Think about the male characters in Apollo 11 or the Da Vinci Code. I think that Ron Howard can do Roland quite well. The real question is how well will he be able to do the fantasy and metaphorical aspect of the novels? There’s not a lot to show in that regard. But it could be great! And thank the heavens they are not going to try to do it all in one movie.
Some of the Novels are side stories to the larger picture and I suspect a lot of that will go by the wayside. One book is an entire flashback to Roland as a child. That will be boiled down to about 15 minutes of film time.
I think you a referring to Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass, however I strongly disagree that this story will be boiled down to 15 minutes of screen time. This one needs a single, stand-alone movie! There are other storylines that could be boiled down, but not this one!
Agreed! Wizard and the Glass is the best book in the series!
Wizards and Glass the best in the series? really? I have never even considered that for a second. I have often wondered that other than the beginning and end and maybe the last battle scene in the flashback…that it should not have been in the series at all…and definately not where it was. That book almost turned me off of the series entirely…and actually did to a few King readers with less faith that I know. And I must admit I was quite disappointed and pissed when I read it…literally the week it came out after waiting years for it. Maybe that one should come out afterwards like a prequel…like SW did.
Though personally, the wastelands is my fave. I have several DT fan friends that liked and appreciated the 4th book the best out of the series. Particularly those fond of westerns. I guess that’s the thing of a cross genre; every one takes away something different.
The events in W&G are the whole key to what happens to Roland, and why he is the way he is…
Wizard and Glass is what made me keep reading. thats the book ive re-read the most. and i completely agree that if we werent let in on that we wouldnt know why Roland is the way he is, and also we wouldnt understand what Roland was talking about when he compared Eddie to Cuthbert. or even have the slightest idea what he meant when he said that Jake had the touch. this was a window into the world before it moved on
I third that emotion!!
yes!!!! the Susan story needs its own movie!!!
They could even transfer this part of the story to the TV series portion. Its the perfect kind of wild west material every true American loves.
I think it would make sense to put the Mejis/Will Dearborn/Susan Delgado storyline in the first film since that’s where it belongs chronologically. It would ease the transition from The Wastelands to Wolves of the Calla. I hope they don’t mess it up though. Wizard and glass, especially the flashback part, is my favorite book in the series.
While it would ease the transition, it would also detract from the mystery of Roland’s character; a theme of the first few books in my opinion. I feel filling in so much back story would steer the viewer away from the “Man with no Name” aspect of Roland, which inspired the character in the first place.
I think that it would be best if the fourth novel was presented as a story within the story of the whole trilogy, or something that all the films would keep coming back to in flashbacks or a different interlude.
I think Wizards and Glass is the most important story in the whole series. It let’s you know why Roland is the Roland we know. It also lets you get the most mythology of the gunslinger world. It surely demands it’s own book.
surely a kick ass movie trilogy!
As long as King is not the one who writes the script! King always make his own stories feel cheap whenever he wrote the scripts… but if other people write it, the story will be awesome. Think Green Mile, Carrie, The Shinning, The Shawshank Redemption…
I say it can’t be done… Let’s assume each movie is 3 hours long and in typical movie fashion is split into 3rds… There are 7 books. So Two books are going to get 2 hours each and the other 5 get 1 hour?
Movie 1 – Gunslinger (can be done in an hour), Drawing of the Three (should be 2 hours, will be 1), Wasteland (should be 2 hours, will be 1)
Movie 2 – Wizard and Glass (2 hours), Song of Susannah (1 hour)
Movie 3 – Wolves of the Calla (1 hour), The Dark Tower (2 hours)
“Song of Susannah” is the 6th book, and “Wolves of the Calla” is the 5th! So your above assumtion won’t work. Making “Wizard and Glass” and “Wolves of the Calla” into 1 movie will never work, this is way too much. We need 5 movies at least (see my breakdown below)!
I think we are assuming the movies will follow the books in order, but the recent Marvel graphic novels present the story differently, in chronological order. In that case, we get some of “the Gunslinger” and most of “Wizard and Glass” as movie #1, The rest of “The Gunslinger” about the Man in black, the “Drawing of the Three,” and “The Waste Lands” as Movie #2, and then the last 3 novels, with much of the side stories omitted. If you look at it this way, three seems fairly decent. You can’t do everything, but you can follow the main storyline all the way through…
um i think dark tower should be a movie all by itself
as long as it starts with:
the man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed…
If it doesn’t, I’m going to get up, leave the theater and never look back.
hell fucking yes
Starts, and ends as well, aye.
One word, people: WILLOW. That’s the last RH fantasy epic. Oy vey.
And Akiva? He’s the fanboys’ worst nightmare. LOST IN SPACE. PRACTICAL MAGIC. BATMAN & ROBIN…AND BATMAN FOREVER for god’s sake. He ruined the end of Richard Matheson’s masterpiece, and he gutted Asimov’s I ROBOT. So now he gets to condense King’s 7-book epic into about 7 hours? I think Harry Knowles’ head just exploded (even if he pretends it didn’t so he gets a set visit).
Totally agree!
We need Sam Raimi, Christopher Nolan or Bryan Singer!
No, we need JJ Abrams, Spielberg, or someone who worked on “300″. THAT’s the style this needs to be in.
Christopher Nolan should direct this series…maybe Sam Raimi. I will be severely disappointed in anything else.
Howard isn’t the worst choice for director, but A.G. is easily the worst choice of writer given his past experience with genre films. They really need someone who understands westerns to be able to work with this project.
wow!!! i cant wait for this!! i hope this would push through!!! i love stephen king so much and the dark tower is awesome!!
OH MY GOD, this is great, I absolutely love the series and I have been really hoping that this would kick off as a film project someday, but WHY RON HOWARD? Da Vinci Code was so boring and flat compared to the original book. OK, I liked Apollo 13, but THE DARK TOWER definetively needs someone like Sam Raimi, Christopher Nolan or Bryan Singer to direct it!
Three movies is also not enough, you at least need 5 (you could combine DT 1+2 (movie 1), DT 3 (movie 2), DT 4 (movie 3) and 5+6 1/2 (movie 4) and 6 1/2 + 7 (movie 5).
One thing about casting: Roland Deschain MUST, and I repeat MUST be played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers. He can play both the ruthless gunslinger as well as the young and passionate lover (absolutely needed for DT 4!)…
I like Jonathan Rhys Meyers and he migh be good. I woule LOVE to see Nathan Fillion once again become a Browncoat!!
If you think that Jonathan Fuckin Meyers should play THE Roland of Gilead then you have no business ever picking up a DT novel again.
Dude Jonathon Rhys Meyers is 32 years old, how is he good to play a 14 yr old Roland in DT VI? He will be even older by the time they were to make the movie
Lance Henriksen for Roland
I loved the concept..but I don’t think the Lobstrocities will translate. I have had nightmares from them…I can only imagine them translated into hokey 3D graphics….
It could translate into another it…awesome book…completely shitty movie….
Seriously. There are so many far-out scenarios in these books. The series is my favorite of all of SK’s works. I really hope they get this right!
dud-a-chum
dad-a-chuc
The lobstrosities are do-able. If Weta could recreate their “Gollum” magic, it might work. And, yeah….”It” was an embarrassment.
THE LOBSTROSITIES!!! They’re so great! I’m willing to bet they just cut them out all together, as well as Roland’s subsequent deformity at the hands (claws) of them. Just like they got rid of Nick Andros losing his eye in The Stand movie.
Dod-a-chock?
NO NO NO NO NO.
There is NO WAY this series could EVER translate to the screen successfully. It’s going to be a GIGANTIC fail.
This is my fear too!
Oh, take it easy. Yeah, the full story of The Dark Tower can only be fully experienced through the masterpiece itself: the book form. However, many people aren’t willing to devote the time required to indulge in the series, and that’s really a shame. This is one of America’s greatest stories, and should be shared. Just think of it like little ripples at the edge off the Dark Tower book series bomb that was dropped into the lake of humanity; an injustice to the original? Definitely. Still amazingly awesome? You bet your ass.
your right critics need to chill . The books will always be the treasures they already are ! King did all the hard work , the books will always stand no matter what happens at the box office. I have been waiting for these movies on the big screen for a long long time. An I hope they do it right , but if they dont I won’t give em to much greif because at least they have the courage and the desire to actually try to turn this wonderful story into the films it deservs to become !
it would need a massive budget to do the series justice,if not i think it will suck.
These are going to suck. Thanks in advance for fucking up another good book, Hollywood.
Even if the adaptations are unsuccessful, the books themselves will still be a great read. Nothing gets ruined just because there’s an attempt at bringing it into another medium.
This. Leave it alone. Stephen, I love you brother but listen to me…You’ve only had one good movie based on a book. And *you* hated that one. This will not live up to what we, your fans, want it to be. It couldn’t ever.
I won’t be seeing it.
Yeah, because once Hollywood starts making this trilogy, they’ll be sneaking into your house and ruin your books by ripping out the pages that contain events that don’t appear in the movie.
If you’ve only waited for good adaptations of the books you love, your life has been filled with disappointment.
Remember, no matter how shitty a movie is, it cannot steal from you how great the book was.
Hope they solve the time problem by only filming the first 5 books seeing as the last 2 were awful.
Oh god.
this series DOES NOT Need to be put in friggen movie/tv format for fuck sakes.
There was a director back in the 80’s who was going to adapt JUST the gunslinger, i cant remember his name, but he had directed some badass stuff, but he croaked before they could get anywhere near done.
Everythings gone 19
I’m not sure I really see any way they can possibly do justice to the DT series in three movies. Maybe I’ll finally have something to be angry enough about to forget Watchmen and that last Indiana jones travesty.
Let’s hope it doesn’t suck! Absolute best book series out there!
Noooooooooooo! I wanted Darabont to do this series! Howard’s KA is not strong enough!
Sam Raimi would definitely be a good choice..
Please don’t disappoint… Please don’t disappoint… Please don’t disappoint… Please don’t disappoint… Please don’t disappoint… Please don’t disappoint…
It does say in the article “screen trilogy and TV series” so you wouldn’t have to boil all 7 books into 3 movies. Some of the transitional work could be done on tv. How cool would that be?! Movie 1, then a 24+ episode tv show that leads directly into movie 2, and so on.
Also, don’t forget that they expanded the realm of TDT into comic books by Marvel, which were very well done.
OMFG! My world just ended…..I can’t believe King just did this…EPIC FAILURE. This is NOT ka, sir.
Akiva Goldsman is going to ruin it, Ron Howard is going to murder it and Brian Gazer is going to set it on fire and piss on it….this is a trifecta of BAD.
Yeah the movies might suck but there is always the book. I don’t want the movies to suck but most Stephen King movies do because of how they try and condense things or just change things for no reason. I would rather see this as a high quality miniseries on HBO or Starz because you have to have language in it otherwise it is another The Stand which could have been so much better with better acting, script and higher production values.
Stephen Moyer (True Blood) or Clive Owen as Roland.
I would love Clint but he is just too old…or is he?
Lance Henriksen as Roland, imo.
Love that DARK TOWER will make it to the screen. Uncomfortable with the Imagine Team behind it. I mean, no offense to Ron or Akiva, but they managed to take two page-turning edge-of-your-seat thrill rides (DA VINCI CODE and ANGELS & DEMONS) and make them slow, and dull, and overbloated. Maybe they should supervise the project for someone who can bring some energy to it.
I love the Dark Tower books too, but there is a LOT of stuff that can be easily cut without touching the core story.
Now, the real question is this, will the filmmakers have the balls to keep the ending?
Although I am very excited that this idea has been floating around for a couple of years now, the project is really going to need someone better than these two screw-ups to make a great picture. This has the potential to be bigger than Lord of the Rings, or it can be horrible. I love the books and hope that for once Ron Howard can actually make a decent movie. With King coproducing maybe he’ll get some stuff in there that would otherwise be left out.
This is probably not the best team to adapt The Gunslinger. For that matter, it’ll be a really tough adaptation for anybody. It starts great, then there’s a book smack in middle that’s entirely a flashback about young love (and, incidentally, is one of the best books out there about young love), then falls off the rails and into the “way way too long and un-understandable” category at the end. Goldsman and Howard do schmaltz, and Goldman trainwrecked I AM LEGEND – a successful movie, obviously, but if they’d just stuck to the book it would have been just as successful but actually good.
I do think this can be done in three parts however – 1-3 as the first movie, then book 4, then 5-7 as the finale. There’s a lot in the series but also a lot that can be cut. The problem is that movie 2/book 4 will have an entirely different cast than movies 1 & 3. In reality they’ll probably mostly drop/gut book 4 and/or bring that story into the present day and do it Lord of the Rings style where it’s three traveling movies – the problem there is that book 4 is the best in the series. Basically I just don’t see how this works.
So sad. Abrams might have done alright, but this is going to be disastrous.
These are serious books. King’s ability to develop characters, the storyline, and mix in other elements is in my opinion second to none. These 7 books took him over 20 years to complete and I hope that the staff working on this project can pay enough respect to him and his work to do it right.
I guess this mean Tom Hanks is going to be Roland. Bleh.
Why couldn’t it have been JJ Abrams and the Lost guys it would have been the greatest movies ever!!!!
There is no way these guys can do it justice in 3 books with that clown goldsman. Damn it these were my favorite books.
“NO NO NO NO NO.
There is NO WAY this series could EVER translate to the screen successfully. It’s going to be a GIGANTIC fail.”
I absolutely agree. There is no way this fantastic story can be translated well to live action film (and only three films to cover seven books at that). An animated film series could work (the Dark Tower comics are *very* good, and IMO enhance the overall story), but this is just…terrible news.
At this point all we can hope for is that they take their time casting and go with unknown actors who do justice to the parts, but sadly it will probably include some hollywood pretty boy playing Roland
A couple comments said Viggo Mortenson – are you FSCKING kidding me? while they are at it they can get the kid from transformers to play Eddie and queen latifa to play Susannah
Have you even seen Viggo in anything besides Lord of the Rings? He would be playing a completely different character.
Watch Hidalgo, History of Violence, and Eastern Promises. Then picture Vigo holding a revolver. Not only is he perfect, but he is the only one who could pull off Roland Deschain of Gilead.
You are so right I can’t even begin to agree. He has the perfect amount of ruggidness and emotion. If its not Viggo than I am not on board.
There is no way they will be able to pull it off. The only people that would be pleased are those who did not read the books. They’ll have to take to much out.
First of all, why cant they make one movie for each individual book in the SERIES? It’s a series, not a trilogy. That little fairy is getting 8 movies, I can’t see why they want to cut it down into 3. Also, I personally believe that a live action movie can do this book series justice and that it should be animated. Not CGI, either. Regular, cel-shaded animation should be the medium used. As for an art style? I envision it looking similar to the art of the “Afro Samurai” series. Or just get the various artists who have worked on the books page art together to collaborate. The reason I think animation would work best is because it is consistent in visuals the whole way through. Where as in live action with special effects (I know they will need special effects for several parts of the story.) there tends to always be an issue of blending in well. Also, Stephen King’s vision throught the story can be really brought to visual fruition with his help. Casting would be easier and allow for Clint Eastwood to play the role of Roland, of which he was the inspiration. But, that’s just my opinion. I know that this project will probably be disappointing because it’s rare, if ever, that books transition well into film. You can’t fully blame Hollywood, though. They will never have the power and resources to compete with human imagination.
You have just broken something inside me: the saga will never be the same again!
I am not feeling good about this. Let’s face it LOTR was ok but could have been better – most of King’s novels that are turned into movies pale in comparrison to the books. This is an epic story, I just don’t see how they can do this in 3 movies.
Come little cullies, there are riddles to solve.
NONONONONONO!
books in this series. The only way to do it right would be a one shot HBO series like Band of Brothers. There’s just way too much.
There are 7 (soon to be
This will suck for the fans and be awesome for everyone else.
I know I am dreaming but I would love to see Drawing of the Three directed by Tarantino, I think he would do a great job with that one.
Yeah, I have to say…I really don’t think Ron Howard is the guy for this. Sorry. I’m prolly just too much of a fanboy of this series to have a unbiased opinion. But jeez man, This has SHIT stamped all of it. really disappointing.
I have to add I do not think Akiva Goldsman is up to the task Oscar winner or not. He is mediocre at best. Angels and Demons was just awful. Hopefully King gets screenplay approval. If I was Ron Howard I would get a new director for each movie that is suited to adapting each book and I would love to see Eastwood as Steven Deschain. Hoping for the best but Ron Howard’s best work was done in the 80’s except for Arrested Development
As much as I would love to see this story on the big screen (or any screen for that matter) I just can’t see anyone in Hollywood doing it right. There is so much inner dialog and narrative that will likely end up missing and you’d need three movies alone just to establish the characters.
This is a saga on par with Dune and Tolkien’s work. Jackson came pretty close to doing LoTR well but still didn’t quite get it. No one has successfully translated Dune to the screen, IMHO.
I won’t deny categorically that this can be done, but I have a hard time seeing how it can be done; especially in only three films even if each one is three hours long.
This breaks my heart! It’s going to suck, and suck big time. Peter Jackson is the only person I’d even consider having hope for doing this series even just acceptably well though I say it can’t be done at all, and certainly not in 7 hours. Seriously?? What a crock of crap. Ron Howard…. I like a few of his movies but he is not up for this. I’m so seriously pissed and disappointed. These books mean a lot to me and now I’m going to have to try to avert my eyes from anything to do with this movie/series, which will be hard as it will be splashed all over media hell for the next couple of years. I don’t want to have my imagination usurped by the schlocky effects and bad casting…I have a vision in my head of what all this looks like and I don’t want it trashed. This is an idiotic undertaking that is going to FAIL.
YESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m Sooo fuckinghappy now!!!!!!!!!!
Bad Movies to be Made From Mediocre Novels!
film at 11
please Hollywood, please don’t fuck these up like you have so many other wonderful books. I am not looking forward to having yet another large chunk of my life ruined by turning it into a shitty movie…
All I can say is…
Thankee Sai!
Thankee-sai. Let’s get it did-a-chum.
Yea I don’t see it happening in only 3 movies…
/facepalm
And the Ron Howard thing could make it even worse, lets just hope he has actually read the damn books and maybe his hottie daughter will make a cameo?
This movie is going to suck… just like everything else Ron Howard does. This is the worst news King fans could get.
very risky—great books—and clint aint young enough to play roland—i dont think anyone else can do it
I agree. He would have been perfect in his earlier years though, you must admit
Well of course clint would be perfect because the character is inspired by the man with no name that he played in leone’s spaghetti westerns.lol I mean it’s gonna be a gigantic task no matter how you cut it. The LOTR series was one I thought would be incredibly tough to bring to life on the screen and it was done incredibly. I doubt this one will be perfect, Abrams and Co. or Peter Jackson were the only people I thought could pull it off, but I hope it is at least decent. I guess my mediocre expectations are a terrible dictation on the expectations of modern big budget film making.
Meh. Whatever happens, there needs to be some rewrites in the final part of the story.
1. The “Stephen King must be protected” subplot must be written out. Sorry, but when King wrote HIMSELF into the book as a CHARACTER, this literally kicked me out of the story. I was no longer immersed in a fantasy world. I was in some creator’s self-absorbed ego trip. Picture James Cameron writing himself into Avatar, poping up from the soil of Pandora, and telling Jake Sully, “You must save me or all of Pandora is lost.”
Wow, man. Wow. Talk about self-absorbed. And to top it off, the drunk driver that nearly killed King is writted into the story as well.
2. The ending of Dark Tower 7. Yuk. Lindsey Lohan’s mom on PMS is more frightening than the Crimson King. Then there’s the final fate of Roland at the end of the book. It’s not brave. It’s not daring. It’s not bold.
IT. JUST. SUCKED.
And I swore off Stephen King after that.
You really didn’t catch on to the theme King was going for. It is actually quite genius the way he wrote himself into the story. I, too, was pissed at first, but then I realized how perfectly it fit in with the world he created. He is God to his own stories, and he explored that theme in a very deep and interesting way.
Let’s face it….there’s no way anybody can fully do justice to this series, no matter how many movies they break this into. It’s just the nature of film making. There’s so much to include, so many flashbacks, side stories, back stories, filler material that really doesn’t have much bearing on the central story. Almost every one of King’s major villains make some sort of appearance in this series; do you think they’ll all make the cut? This is a story that moves from point A to point B, but not without making a quick trip to point L first. No matter what, somebody is going to be unhappy, somebody will say ‘I can’t believe they cut out (fill in the blank). Somebody out there will be offended if they don’t include reference to the graphic novel. We need to be happy that someone is actually taking on this monumental story. Ron Howard has come a long way from Willow, if he’s actually tied to Dark Tower, I think something that holds true to the core story will evolve to the screen. But no matter the ka-tet, the story will be told. And that is a good thing.
Christian Bale or the dude from Justified for Roland
Guy Pearce might work as Roland. Well, the older Roland.
I’ve been looking forward to this for about a decade now.
I agree, “the man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed…” is the only opening i want to see.
If clint were stronger and faster moving, he’d be a great fit, he’s one of the original gunslingers after all. However, we need someone who can run backwards at full speed while slaughtering a town full of hopped up weed-eaters; and who is capable of carrying a crippled schizophrenic black chick at a dead run through dark tunnels and down long flights of stairs.
I’d also like to see how they characterize ‘blain the mono’ and his counterpart, “little blain”.
Great more bloated unwatchable dreck from Ron Howard and Akiva Goldsman. This will end badly.
Sorry, but the Gunslinger series SHALL NOT PASS as comparison to LOTR. On top of being a ridiculous narcissism engine for King in the end, the story completely fell apart, and was nothing better than child’s writing.
That being said, the first four books are excellent, and if they can get past everything else and shoot right to the very end, i think it would be worthy of viewership.
I have loved these books since I was a young boy. My first tattoo I ever got was inspired by the novels and has a banner around it that says “Found”. This is an Epic, and beautiful story that will never be able to FULLY translate to film. However, I am willing to see how the movies turn out. If done right it might inspire others to read the series of books that we all know and love. If it FAILS, well at least we still “Remember the face of our Fathers.”
title mentioned that, then there was one sentence in the article mentioning it. not much evidence of a tv show, sounds like they have little or no info on it so maybe they just made it up.
I’m torn. Would love to see a good movie/series made from these books. I know it’s possible
But, is it probable??
I guess we’ll see….
WOW, The fact that such a series is being considered being made into several Movies makes for every exciting times!! I say, if you want it done right, and over the top, Have Wes Craven (Nightmare on Elm st), Peter Jackson(Lord of the Rings) and J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5) make it. All of them have done excelent work, give them free rein and stand back! (to heck with $$!)
Sam Elliott would have been PERFECT for Roland…20 years ago. Damn.
Lets face it no matter how epic or fail it is every one of us is going to be there opening night.
Hey, no one thought Peter Jackson could pull off LOTR, either. I’ll wait and see before I start shooting people.
Clint should play the Preacher.
A different Callahan…And he is called The Old Fella by the Calla folken!
If anyone can make these movies good it would be Ron Howard. But 3 movies, Are you fucking kidding me? The Seventh book alone would have to be split into two movies. What they need to do is make it into a show or a mini series. But they won’t cuz everyone in Hollywood is fucking retarded. And if they condense the 4th book into a 15 minute segment I will kill myself. That part of the story is crucial in understanding why the Gunslingers has detached himself from all emotion and why he is reluctant to love again. But yes Viggo Mortenson should play Roland and Clint Eastwood should play his father. And all u people who didn’t like Willow can just fuck off, that movie is the shit. BTW Lost in Space, Batman & Robin, and Batman Forever all kick ass. And Fuck Christian Bale, They shouldn’t even let him watch the movies once they r made, he would make a terrible Roland. They r gonna fuck these up just like they did with Harry Potter and The Golden Compass.
Your optimism and championing of hope in the human spirit is awe inspiring.
Hugh Jackman as Roland.
I’d rather see anything they can do with these books than nothing at all. Even if it’s terrible I’ll still watch because I love these books so much! I agree about book 4, if you cut it down you are losing the whole essence of Roland. But who would play the young Roland? If it’s the same actor with make-up they better do a super job or it will just be lame. And who would play Susan? Almost any “famous” woman in Hollywood right now would just come off wrong and tacky. Jonathan Rhys Meyers??? Christian Bale??? Do you really picture Roland that young? No way. I think that would be all wrong. I did see a suggestion that Susannah could be played by Zoe Saldana. I never really had a good picture of her when I tried to imagine her in the books. I Like Zoe Saldana. It would be great.
I think I would actually rather see nothing than watch Akiva Goldsman ruin everything that we love about the series. This man just continuously proves that he can have the best source material in the world and still make it terrible. It’s like he’s on a mission. And even a competent screenwriter would have a hard (impossible?) time fitting everything into three movies. Harry Potter books can’t even fit into a single movie anymore and, as much as I like Harry Potter, I think the DT books are higher quality.
Also, I have this sick feeling in my gut that if they even bother to make Wizard and Glass, Even Stevens will end up playing young Roland. Taking bets.
An EIGHTH BOOK?!? This just made my year.
Most of King’s books come off really cartoon-ish in the movies. The exceptions are the shining and a lot of his non-horror material like Stand By Me and The Shawshank Redemption. I’m worried about it being three movies, but I’m even more concerned about the possibility of turning it into a television series unless it was done by HBO or Showtime. Of course, I’ll watch them anyway, because the books were amazing.
As for dream casting: I think Jude Law would make a cool Eddie, and Clint Eastwood could be a good choice for Walter, the man in Black. I saw Zoe Saldana suggested for Susannah, but she’s too pretty, and I kind of pictured Susannah to be meaner and tougher. Maybe Halle Berry could pull it off, I don’t know. I don’t know who will play Jake either, but casting a bad child actor can really ruin a film. As for Roland, I’d lock George Clooney in a room for eight days with nothing to do but watch The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, and then cast him.
Lets just say if Ron Howard messes this up we send him to horrible todash space between worlds…
NEWSFLASH: CLINT EASTWOOD IS 80 YEARS OLD
Gina Torres from Firefly would be a good Susannah, she’s tough and beautiful and I bet she could do a good “Butterfly McQueen” Detta. No young starlet should play Susan Delgado though, without passion she’d come off childish and willful. I imagine her look similar to Blake Lively or Evan Rachel Wood in Across the Universe but I doubt either of those girls could do her justice. A young Roland would be even harder to cast.
This is terrible, each book should get its own movie! Wizard and Glass’s love story and the parts in Meji’s alone would be 2-3 hours. No movie team will do these stories justice and it would be horrible if they ruin the franchise for others who haven’t read the books yet. Also very few actors could play the roles.
Viggo Mortensen as Roland but most definitely Ben Cross as the Man in Black. Clint deserves a nod, and would be a good fit for Cort.
CAST: My opinions at least.
Roland: Gerard Butler see here http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2208142848/tt0410377
Detta/Odetta/Susannah: Vivica A. Fox.
Eddie: I liked the Jude Law suggestion.
Jake: No idea. They’ll probably get some fresh faced youngster ala Anakin Skywalker.
Steven Deschain: Timothy Olyphant. I don’t think he’d be right for Roland. His face is too chiseled and angular. Nothing wrong with it, just doesn’t go with the artwork from the books.
That’s all I got for now.
I’ve read the DT series 3 times. I feel as though the characters are my best friends. I’m sure no matter who does the film, or who plays Roland, it won’t be near as good as the books. But I would still love to see the film version.
holy crap… this is huge. this is so rad.
I always envisioned Neal Mcdonough as Roland…
Ok, here are some cast ideas my fiance and I were playing around with. (Keep in mind…EARLY brain storming)
Roland – I was leaning toward Hugh Jackman (aged by the magic of Hollywood) but Ed Harris might be an interesting choice. Serious actor, good age wise, and he’s already got Roland’s eyes.
Susanna – LOVE Zoe Saldana. (she looks like a young version of how I always pictured her)
Eddie – FH likes Casey Affleck for him. I don’t think that would be a bad choice. My random/stretch choice – Leigh Whannell (guy from the first Saw movie) He kinda has the attitude and the vulnerablity I always got from Eddie. Might be too much of a stretch though.
Man in Black – Willem Dafoe
Cort – Viggo Mortensen or Alan Rickman
Roland’s Dad – Has to be Clint Eastwood!
Yes, Alan Rickman! Finally someone suggests it! I would put him as the Man in Black, though.
Only person i agree with for roland. I’ve thought of Ed Harris ever since i saw Appaloosa and you’re absoutely right about the eyes. I’ve been trying to convince people of this for so long.
Vivica A Fox seems too old to be Susannah to me. Timothy Olyphant should be Eddie. What a perfect smart ass! While in reality he’s only a few yeasr younger than Fox he comes off much younger on screen.
NononononoNO! I was soooo thrilled when I heard JJ Abrams wanted to do this, but RH and AG?! All I have to say is: The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed. Well, mayhap THIS is what they were running from.
never watched a film thats been better than the book.still looking forward to watching films.if there even half as good as the books they will be good enough.
It’s a pity Clint Eastwood is too old for Roland, because I always imagined Roland as younger Clint.
My roommate suggested Hugh Laurie, and I don’t know, I don’t hate it.
Anybody but Christian Bale. Please, DON’T put him in another movie, ever. That would ruin DT for me.
And yes, a lot of these Roland suggestions do seem far too young to me.
If you think about stephen king movies they have all the same actors in a large percentage of his movies i believe that Thomas Jane will be a shoe in for roland at the time of filming. And he has also done 2 stephen king movies first in Dreamcatcher then in The Mist, at this point i dont see anyone else doing it
I LOVE THE DARK TOWER NOVELS!!!!i couldnt stop reading them!!!An eighth book? i might faint! my only goal in life is to read ALL of Stephen King’s work. if they make this movie i am definatly going to the theater numerous times to watch it than buying it on dvd. all i ask is they dont butcher the story in the movie. The Dark Tower series is a masterpiece!
Anyone but the writer of Batman and Robin and Angels and Demons, please. Especially on a project as obsessively complex as this one. It’s not like the DT series is anywhere near as easy of an adaptation as the Da Vinci code, either. This project needs a fresh, vibrant mind with a unique take to spearhead it, or else it’s going to wind up either a bloated mess of nonsense or some shallow, stripped-down PG13 garbage. Who cares about the casting at this point?
I think a Guillermo del Toro or Terry Gilliam directed Neil Gaiman written/produced combo would get it done nicely. If the proposed TV series is integrated with a trilogy, I think it could be done in three movies…but the Ron Howard crew is scaring me a bit, too.
My wife and I both loved the series, here is who we think would be good:
Roland: Ed Harris, Robert Duvall (too old?), Tom Sellek, or Ralph Fiennes.
Susannah: Zoe Saldana or Jada Pinkett Smith.
Eddie: Joel McHale (yep, you heard me), Matt Damon, or Casey Affleck.
Jake: Beats me. Who is a good actor in the kid scene these days? When I read it, I envisioned Frankie Muniz. Not anymore.
Father Callahan: Clint Eastwood, or let James Cromwell have another shot at it.
I always hated the way they ended the re-make of ‘Salem’s Lot….Cromwell would be great in it.
Roland-Viggo Mortensen
Eddie-Casey Affleck
Susannah-Halle Berry
Jake-No idea
Man In Black “Walter O Dim”-Hugo Weaving
Sprinkle in Robert Duvall, Gary Sinesse, and some other great character actor cameos and you have the makings of the next critically acclaimed and financially successfull trilogy.
All Hail the Dark Tower!
NO! Not Ron Howard!
He’s not a bad director, but I can’t see him pulling off a fantasy story of this magnitude. I prefer the early rumours suggesting that JJ Abrams would be tackling the project.
And to be honest, I would prefer to see a TV series based on “The Dark Tower” rather than a film series. There are so many little nuances to deal with that the film versions would be slowed down to a near crawl. A TV show could remedy this and give each “chapter” the attention it deserves.
As for dream-casting, I always wanted to see Sam Rockwell play Eddie (Although I’ve been saying this for years and now he’s too old to play that character).
Scott Glenn would make a perfect older Roland, but he might be a bit too old now at 69. He does tough guys who don’t talk much very well. (Silverado)
