EXCLUSIVE: In a whopping deal coming together quickly, Stephen King, Imagine Entertainment and Weed Road are in discussions to make a screen trilogy and TV series out of King’s epic novel series The Dark Tower. Akiva Goldsman will write the script, Ron Howard will direct it, and his Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer will produce with Goldsman and King.
Universal is in talks to acquire a package that included the books, and the attachment of the team behind the Oscar-winning film A Beautiful Mind and The Da Vinci Code. Both Universal –where Imagine is based—and Warner Bros—where Goldsman’s Weed Road banner is housed—have been vying for the project.
The Dark Tower is King’s answer to JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, and the author will get his own screen trilogy. Like Tolkien, King’s epic novel series is set in an otherworldly but familiar world, and involves a quest to save the world. The series spanned seven novels that involved Roland Deschain, the last living member of a knightly order of gunslingers who exists in a world that has an Old West feel, but which is infused with magic. He is on a quest to find the Dark Tower, a structure that holds the key to the nexus of all universes. He encounters many allies and enemies along the way, as the world crumbles around him.
The book series was once developed by JJ Abrams and his Lost cohorts Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, but they never cracked it. Goldsman, who has become a prolific producer, was the catalyst for securing the rights from King, and he brought it to Howard and Grazer. It was not immediately evident how large the transaction was, but King has often optioned his works for little or no money upfront, and reportedly he bestowed the rights on Abrams for $19, a number which has significance in the novel series. King is working on an eighth novel, one that doesn’t change the ending, but deals with characters and a storyline that falls midway in the series. CAA is working on the deal.

Everythings gone 19
I’m not sure I really see any way they can possibly do justice to the DT series in three movies. Maybe I’ll finally have something to be angry enough about to forget Watchmen and that last Indiana jones travesty.
Let’s hope it doesn’t suck! Absolute best book series out there!
Noooooooooooo! I wanted Darabont to do this series! Howard’s KA is not strong enough!
Sam Raimi would definitely be a good choice..
Please don’t disappoint… Please don’t disappoint… Please don’t disappoint… Please don’t disappoint… Please don’t disappoint… Please don’t disappoint…
It does say in the article “screen trilogy and TV series” so you wouldn’t have to boil all 7 books into 3 movies. Some of the transitional work could be done on tv. How cool would that be?! Movie 1, then a 24+ episode tv show that leads directly into movie 2, and so on.
Also, don’t forget that they expanded the realm of TDT into comic books by Marvel, which were very well done.
OMFG! My world just ended…..I can’t believe King just did this…EPIC FAILURE. This is NOT ka, sir.
Akiva Goldsman is going to ruin it, Ron Howard is going to murder it and Brian Gazer is going to set it on fire and piss on it….this is a trifecta of BAD.
Yeah the movies might suck but there is always the book. I don’t want the movies to suck but most Stephen King movies do because of how they try and condense things or just change things for no reason. I would rather see this as a high quality miniseries on HBO or Starz because you have to have language in it otherwise it is another The Stand which could have been so much better with better acting, script and higher production values.
Stephen Moyer (True Blood) or Clive Owen as Roland.
I would love Clint but he is just too old…or is he?
Lance Henriksen as Roland, imo.
Love that DARK TOWER will make it to the screen. Uncomfortable with the Imagine Team behind it. I mean, no offense to Ron or Akiva, but they managed to take two page-turning edge-of-your-seat thrill rides (DA VINCI CODE and ANGELS & DEMONS) and make them slow, and dull, and overbloated. Maybe they should supervise the project for someone who can bring some energy to it.
I love the Dark Tower books too, but there is a LOT of stuff that can be easily cut without touching the core story.
Now, the real question is this, will the filmmakers have the balls to keep the ending?
Although I am very excited that this idea has been floating around for a couple of years now, the project is really going to need someone better than these two screw-ups to make a great picture. This has the potential to be bigger than Lord of the Rings, or it can be horrible. I love the books and hope that for once Ron Howard can actually make a decent movie. With King coproducing maybe he’ll get some stuff in there that would otherwise be left out.
This is probably not the best team to adapt The Gunslinger. For that matter, it’ll be a really tough adaptation for anybody. It starts great, then there’s a book smack in middle that’s entirely a flashback about young love (and, incidentally, is one of the best books out there about young love), then falls off the rails and into the “way way too long and un-understandable” category at the end. Goldsman and Howard do schmaltz, and Goldman trainwrecked I AM LEGEND – a successful movie, obviously, but if they’d just stuck to the book it would have been just as successful but actually good.
I do think this can be done in three parts however – 1-3 as the first movie, then book 4, then 5-7 as the finale. There’s a lot in the series but also a lot that can be cut. The problem is that movie 2/book 4 will have an entirely different cast than movies 1 & 3. In reality they’ll probably mostly drop/gut book 4 and/or bring that story into the present day and do it Lord of the Rings style where it’s three traveling movies – the problem there is that book 4 is the best in the series. Basically I just don’t see how this works.
So sad. Abrams might have done alright, but this is going to be disastrous.
These are serious books. King’s ability to develop characters, the storyline, and mix in other elements is in my opinion second to none. These 7 books took him over 20 years to complete and I hope that the staff working on this project can pay enough respect to him and his work to do it right.
I guess this mean Tom Hanks is going to be Roland. Bleh.
Why couldn’t it have been JJ Abrams and the Lost guys it would have been the greatest movies ever!!!!
There is no way these guys can do it justice in 3 books with that clown goldsman. Damn it these were my favorite books.
“NO NO NO NO NO.
There is NO WAY this series could EVER translate to the screen successfully. It’s going to be a GIGANTIC fail.”
I absolutely agree. There is no way this fantastic story can be translated well to live action film (and only three films to cover seven books at that). An animated film series could work (the Dark Tower comics are *very* good, and IMO enhance the overall story), but this is just…terrible news.
At this point all we can hope for is that they take their time casting and go with unknown actors who do justice to the parts, but sadly it will probably include some hollywood pretty boy playing Roland
A couple comments said Viggo Mortenson – are you FSCKING kidding me? while they are at it they can get the kid from transformers to play Eddie and queen latifa to play Susannah
Have you even seen Viggo in anything besides Lord of the Rings? He would be playing a completely different character.
Watch Hidalgo, History of Violence, and Eastern Promises. Then picture Vigo holding a revolver. Not only is he perfect, but he is the only one who could pull off Roland Deschain of Gilead.
You are so right I can’t even begin to agree. He has the perfect amount of ruggidness and emotion. If its not Viggo than I am not on board.
There is no way they will be able to pull it off. The only people that would be pleased are those who did not read the books. They’ll have to take to much out.
First of all, why cant they make one movie for each individual book in the SERIES? It’s a series, not a trilogy. That little fairy is getting 8 movies, I can’t see why they want to cut it down into 3. Also, I personally believe that a live action movie can do this book series justice and that it should be animated. Not CGI, either. Regular, cel-shaded animation should be the medium used. As for an art style? I envision it looking similar to the art of the “Afro Samurai” series. Or just get the various artists who have worked on the books page art together to collaborate. The reason I think animation would work best is because it is consistent in visuals the whole way through. Where as in live action with special effects (I know they will need special effects for several parts of the story.) there tends to always be an issue of blending in well. Also, Stephen King’s vision throught the story can be really brought to visual fruition with his help. Casting would be easier and allow for Clint Eastwood to play the role of Roland, of which he was the inspiration. But, that’s just my opinion. I know that this project will probably be disappointing because it’s rare, if ever, that books transition well into film. You can’t fully blame Hollywood, though. They will never have the power and resources to compete with human imagination.
You have just broken something inside me: the saga will never be the same again!
I am not feeling good about this. Let’s face it LOTR was ok but could have been better – most of King’s novels that are turned into movies pale in comparrison to the books. This is an epic story, I just don’t see how they can do this in 3 movies.
Come little cullies, there are riddles to solve.
NONONONONONO!
books in this series. The only way to do it right would be a one shot HBO series like Band of Brothers. There’s just way too much.
There are 7 (soon to be
This will suck for the fans and be awesome for everyone else.
I know I am dreaming but I would love to see Drawing of the Three directed by Tarantino, I think he would do a great job with that one.
