Charlie Sheen is not the only TV leading man considering leaving their hit comedy series after Season 7.
Now Steve Carell, star of The Office says he intends to exit NBC’s top comedy series at the end of next season when his contract is up. In a BBC radio interview promoting the film Date Night, which was dug up by the site officetally.com, Carell is asked if he will stay on The Office beyond next season. “I don’t think so,” he said. “I think that will probably be my last year.” Of course, Carell’s feature career took off since his star-making turn on The Office with such movies as The 40 Year Old Virgin, Get Smart and Date Night, so he may want to focus on films full-time. Standard cast deals on network series nowadays lock actors in for six seasons, but contract renegotiations with key cast members often add an extra year to the term of their deals, giving them a clean exit after Season 7.
Even if Carell leaves next May, which is still ways away, he may stay in a business with NBC for a long time. His company is based at UMS and he is producing the Rockford Files remake, which is in serious consideration for a series pickup at NBC. NBC had no comment.

I love The Office but this season has lost some of its magic. Maybe season 7 should be its last, go out while still on top.
The end of The Office. NO!!!!!!!
He also has a series at USA Network in development.
If NBC can get a handful of their new shows to reach 8-10 million viewers with at least one comedy then I could see The Office ending.
If its a repeat of this season then I see NBC backing up the money truck or even continuing The Office without Carell which could kill the show. Community has developed into the funniest show on network television but is not getting the ratings it deserves.
Totally agree, NBC would SOMEHOW come up with the funds to keep Carell. I suppose the show couldn’t last without him.
The Office has been running on fumes I think for the last couple of seasons — and this year has been a real snooze. Instead of actually, say, developing supporting characters like “Cheers” did, they’ve been doing the same shtick on The Office week after week for years. There are only so many times Dwight can act like an idiot, etc. The whole Pam pregnancy angle was totally botched, the potential for some funny shows was there and they didn’t do anything to exploit it.
The ratings are still sound but I think it’s completely time for the series to end. Even Carrell has looked bored at times this season — the smart thing is to end it after next year, Carrell or not, it’s time.
I couldn’t agree more with this post. The Office hasn’t been good for the past two seasons, and this season especially has seen some truly terrible episodes. (“Mafia”, anyone?) Seriously, it is time for this show to end while it can still end on a (somewhat) high note. And I say this as someone who loved the show since the beginning, because it breaks my heart to see how stale and unfunny it has become.
Perfectly said. Painful to watch now.
There goes about 300 people’s jobs…
Stick to what works best, Steve… a movie star you are NOT.
Something tells me those 300 or so people are aware of what business they’re in, and that eventually they’d need to find a new show to work on. That’s what this business is all about, buddy. The show is dying and it should go out with dignity. It was one of the most clever television series that’s ever been on, but lately it’s been going down hill. .
As I’ve been saying all this season.. It’s about time for The Office to wrap up. I’ve been a fan since the very beginning and the show’s just not the same anymore. They’ve really go no where to go; they’re burned out. Just end it.
Replace Carell with Ricky Gervais, he’ll make a funnier boss.
No way, I’ve seen the British version and Carrel is a lot funnier than Gervais.
Wow, Jerry, thanks for the definitive, not-just-an-opinion pronouncement on who is funnier, Steve Carell or Ricky Gervais. A lot of people think Gervais, who created the show and the part, was ingeniously funny in the British version of the show. But I guess they’re just flat-out wrong, huh?
I would be interesting train wreck TV to see them TRY to bring in a new boss. And they will have to if Carrell leaves. The show’s ratings are way to high not to try.
he’s the worst person on the show, next to Jim of course.
Replace Carell with Ricky Gervais, he’ll make a funnier boss.
Actually, that would make a fine final episode. When Carrell’s character leaves for what he assumes to be “greener pastures”, the staff should then be introduced to their “new boss” –
– and it’s Ricky Gervais’ character from the original office, thinking that “this here now, this is my big step up in corporate, I’ve come a long way from Britain”, and of course –
– it’s just the same crap all over.
Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.
I love Steve Carell and Jim Krasinski but can’t stand them in the office or the show.
I really admire those actors who have film careers who HONOR their contract — like george clooney and charlie sheen — unlike Katherine Heigl who asked to be let of of her contract — for a show that reinvigorated her career in so many ways.
You got scooped by Perez…that’s kinda shocking.
They were able to come out from under the shadow of the terrific original British version and put their own stamp on the show. It worked extremely well for a few seasons, but it’s time to move on. The Office has clearly run its course.
I hate to be nit-picky, but technically 40 Year Old Virgin is responsible for Carell’s star to rise. The Office was struggling in the ratings – but after the movie came out and was a smash, The Office picked up steam. It’s now the top scripted show on NBC. Trust me, NBC will do whatever they can to keep the show going.
Carrell is not funny at all and his movie characters are all pretty much the same as his office shtick.
i agree
I think Carrell would be the perfect next host of the Tonight Show. If I were in charge at NBC (pay attention now) I would have Carrell start guest hosting Tonight. Think about it, he already has a built in NBC 18-49 male and female audience.
Yeah, like Leno would ever allow anybody to guest-host HIS show.
I would Creed the new boss, or per johnindc’s suggestion maybe give Creed the tonight show, I’d watch that! YOU GO CREED!
Agreed that THE OFFICE has lost steam – and I’m a huge fan. From “Gossip” ep. which was fun to “Mafia” which made little sense… NBC should let it go – unless it can really provide some kind of jolt with a new boss. (Amy Poehler making a move to the private sector?)
So this is where arm chair quarterbacks unite. The show’s funny. Top 5 comedies on TV are in no particular order: The Office, 30 Rock, Modern Family, Parks and Rec and Family Guy. What’s better? Sarah Silverman is funny, but not on that level, South Park deserves to be in there too. There just aren’t great comedies out there, so letting one go because it’s having a bad year seems stupid to me. I would prefer to have as many smart comedies on the air as possible, even if they aren’t what they were.
PS they will back the truck up. Scrooge McDuck style.
I agree that the show has been floundering for the past couple of seasons. If the character of Micheal Scott is to leave the office I want it to be because he has gotten together, again, with Holly. Make it a happy ending instead of just an ending.
Nooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!! The Office is the best!! It can’t end!
Dont care he is the worst part of the show
Ok. For all you people out there who are saying that The Office has “lost its magic” or it has been “floundering,” let me just say now that THAT is RIDICULOUS! I love the office and definitely don’t think it should end. (Obviously by now everbody knows that it isn’t, but I didn’t think it should end when all this hype was going on either.) My point is, The Office is an amazing show and I feel sorry for those who can’t see that.
