Here’s the official news release. I had this first back on April 7th: Is Bill Condon About To Sink Fangs Into ‘Twilight’ Saga’s Two Final Segments?:
Los Angeles, CA April 28, 2010 – Summit Entertainment has confirmed that Academy Award® winner Bill Condon will direct THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN, based on the fourth novel in author Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN, is currently being written by Melissa Rosenberg, and will star Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. Wyck Godfrey, Karen Rosenfelt, and Stephenie Meyer will produce the project.
“Bringing Stephenie Meyer’s BREAKING DAWN to the screen requires a graceful and intelligent hand and we believe Bill Condon is exactly the right steward, having shown equal and abundant talents of immense creativity and subtle sensitivity,” said Erik Feig, President of Production and Acquisitions, for Summit Entertainment.
Added author Stephenie Meyer, “I’m so thrilled that Bill wants to work with us. I think he’s going to be a great fit, and I’m excited to see what he does with the material.”
“I’m very excited to get the chance to bring the climax of this saga to life on-screen. As fans of the series know, this is a one-of-a-kind book – and we’re hoping to create an equally unique cinematic experience,” said Bill Condon.
Condon is well known for writing and directing DREAMGIRLS, KINSEY, and GODS AND MONSTERS, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1999. He was nominated for a second Oscar for his screenplay for the movie musical CHICAGO in 2003. Most recently the multi-hyphenate directed the pilot episode for the Showtime series “The Big C” and produced the 81st Annual Academy Awards telecast, hosted by Hugh Jackman.
The third film in the franchise, THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE is due in theaters on June 30, 2010.
Condon is represented by WME and Anonymous Content.

Bill, you’re better than this.
Bill…
Bill?
So, will they break it down into two films or just the one? Is that why they hired him – because he found a way to make it into one?
And the obsession this site has with the Twilight Saga continues…
I do find it funny how greedy Summit is though. Most of the fans hated this last part of the book series and its interesting that they make this one into two movies. The fans didnt even like it…
I think twilight and breaking dawn were the best of the four. Not sure what you were reading, but new moon and eclipse just irritated me…
I think one of the areas of Twlight Saga filmmaking Bill Condon can have the most positive impact on is the screenplay. Melissa Rosenberg needs some help at this point, her screenplays for the previous films are just lacking a refined and “big” feel to them. The central love story has never been given a chance to be truly classic and epic (with the way she writes).
Looking forward to Mr. Condon’s contributions.
does anyone know when they’ll start production on this?
RE: TODJA!!!
You sure did tell us. Good work!
So the director of Gods and Monsters, Kinsey, & Dreamgirls is directing Twilight? He must have gotten a nice backend deal
Wonder if Bill Condon will do Renesmee by CGI. Guess I’m in the minority, but I thought the CGI wolves were great. I was pleasantly surprised that they were very realistic looking and moving.
Amazing. In one fell swoop, I have lost all respect for Bill Condon. Doesn’t matter that he made great movies like Dreamgirls, Kinsey, or Gods and Monsters. From now on he’ll be one of the directors associated with the tween dreck that is Twilight.
Dear Firebrand… I am sure that Bill Condon will be devestated to know that YOU “have lost all respect” for him. That will sure give him second thoughts. Amazing, you can respect him for three great movies, but based on his decision to direct one in a series you don’t care for (and a movie that you have not even seen!) you turn your nose up and count him out. Get over yourself.
I love these people who down Bill for directing this, when they never read the books or watched the movies. You have to read the books, then watch the films to even get it. And guess what I am far from a teenager and loved these books.
Why, Bill…_why_?
Because of his strength in adapting screenplays from original material, the area of Twilight Saga filmmaking that Bill Condon can have the most positive impact is on is the screenplay. Let’s face it, Melissa Rosenberg needs major help, her Twilight screenplays are just not great and have failed to truly capture the classic love story that attracts females of all ages to these books. Her writing is mostly sappy, not satisfying. This last book, with all its well known, semi-ludicrous storyline challenges will need a much more refined hand. Looking forward to Condon’s contributions.
Well, Bill Condon’s career is over.
I just hope and pray they make BREAKING DAWN totally faithful to the book. It is one of the most horribly written, utterly stupid, and truly laugh out loud books ever printed. Seriously, Google the book and read a quick synopsis for a good chuckle. If they make this a true adaptation — and there is even an online petition from TWILIGHT hating fans demanding that the movie be 100% faithful to the book — as crappy as the other movies in the series have been so far, BREAKING DAWN could ultimately be the greatest Ed Wood movie that Ed Wood never made.
Well Breaking Dawn was one of the best books, I loved it.. and im pretty sure theres more Twilight Lovers than HATERS! You probably haven’t even read any of the books let along watched Twilight, New Moon or Eclipse ! I Hope Bill Condon Does a great Job & I honestly think he will.. He seems to be more into the book. So Hopefully he will make it like the book. Can’t Wait for the movie to come out, & I’m pretty sure He still is going to be the Director NO matter what people say or do, It’s Still going to happen. So You Twilight haters might as well Suck it up… If you do not like Twilight then don’t bother. Leave your opionions to yourself because I think it would be better if you just kept your thoughts to yourself
seems like an odd match. i liked gods and monsters. but condon has NEVER directed a teen movie. twilight is a teen romance about first love. it’s not a musical.
I thought Jacb was a HOTy. I LOVE JACB LOVE,Bella
Bottom line? He’s traded artistic credibility for money- and it’s probably a bad trade, because he’s actually inheriting all the questionable decisions and ill will from critics left behind by three previous directors. There’s no rabbit LEFT to pull out of the hat- and a good chance the fanbase will be bored with the whole mess by the time his film comes out.Seriously, apart from short-term financial gain, what good can come of it?
Bill, You will do fine..never listen to negative..Im looking forward to you directing this powerful book into a powerful movie. Please let us interested in auditioning for the parts still left open to know when they are. As an actress that hasn’t been acting in awhile i found myself intreeged by Stephenie Meyers brilliant mind and want to be a part of this. i sent my head shots to John Middleton on 606 lauchmont, but i don’t think he is still there. My agent and i thought he was doing the cssting for this movie too. God only knows whats in store for me, but either way may God Bless you and you will do a great job. Kimberly dawn Hobbie kimberlybryant87@yahoo.com 605-553-1296 PS Hope i didn’t bore you!! Please post auditions, I will be there at the drop of a hat.
Bella+Jake=Love. Will You Go Out With Me Jake Yes Or No.Love,Bella
Obviously they must have paid him a fortune, but he knows that his name will be on the line now, therefore he is going to work twice as hard to make a good film out of it. Hes not an idiot, he must have known people were going to be like: Why Bill why? BUT I really think they should just make 1. Fans HATED the last book, but then again, maybe it works in reverse order. The first three books were loved and the movies werent so great..maybe the book that twilighters think is bad would be a good flick? Its not like those fans have good taste and judgement IDK I wont judge it yet though. Too early
If Bill follows breaking dawn as written by Stephanie, he should make 2 movies and create a Renesme beyond our thought process!!! If he can do it, this will be an incredible movie. Most twilight will agree, that breaking dawn was and incredible book. If not then I am not sure what you were reading!! And you other morons that make comments without reading the books or watching the films just lock it up, noone cares what you think k!!!
Don’t hate on Condon. Oscar gold is nice but it won’t get you that Tuscan villa. He’ll be paid handsomely for the last two Twilight films and then he’ll also get a backend deal, just like the main stars of the series do. That will let him be able to finance projects that he truly cares about. The worst working director in Hollywood, Michael Bay, was the highest paid last year. Let Bill Condon get his gravy too. He’s already shown us he has talent. I forgive you Bill.
