EXCLUSIVE: Aisha Tyler has landed the lead opposite Laura Benanti on CBS’ comedy pilot Open Books, with Scott Foley also tapped
for a major role. Open Books stars Benanti as June, a book editor at a boutique New York publishing house. Tyler will play her best friend, a waitress-actress. Foley will play a charismatic free-spirited writer who once had a fling with June. Foley will guest star as he is already a regular on another pilot, the ABC drama True Blue. Another CBS comedy pilot, Team Spitz, recently cast Sarah Chalke in a guest starring capacity as she also is a regular on an ABC pilot, comedy Freshman.
- Fox’s untitled sketch comedy pilot from Jamie Foxx and MadTV creators Fax Bahr and Adam Small, has added several more series regulars: Erica Ash (MadTV), Eric Andre, Kyle Dunnigan (Reno 911!) and Dana DeLorenzo. They join Affion Crockett.
- CBS’ untitled Bays/Thomas pilot has tapped its last regular, Brandon Hardesty, who plays Lindsay Sloane’s younger brother.
- ER alum Gil McKinney has been tapped for a heavily recurring role on the upcoming
fifth (and likely last) season of Friday Night Lights. In at least six episodes, he will play a smart and attractive graduate teaching assistant in a college history department who is married, but, with his wife away on sabbatical, he strikes up a relationship with Julie Taylor (Aimee Teegarden) that will become more than professional. McKinney is with Domain and Framework.

Isn’t Chalke attached to ABC’s Freshman, not Mr. Sunshine??
The season of Friday Night Lights currently in production is it’s fifth fifth, not it’s sixth.
You mean season five*** of Friday Night Lights?

huh – a “charismatic free spirit” works for a boutique book publisher, which I’m sure will have really cool office space in a trendy part of Manhattan and hip employees dressed in the latest fashions, and presumably customers for their books. Glad to see that fantasy is still alive as a genre in television!
They need to hold a funeral for the sitcom. They can bury them right next to the documentary, investigative journalism, the movie of the week, and the epic mini series, and while they’re burying the sitcom, they can dig a hole for reality too.
Disclaimer – No, I don’t think I could do any better … and yes, I know it’s hard to fathom the tastes of today’s fractured audience.
Bahr and Small = kiss of death to comedy.
Geez – are there really NO talented actors around? Getting pilots AND guest stars at the same time? Where’s The List of approved people that excludes other actors – who can act – from at least guest star roles?
This article does not say the sixth season. It says FIFTH season and Gil will be in SIX episodes! Loved him in ER and look forward to seeing him in Friday Night Lights.
great article.. gil mckinney is brilliant and extremely good looking
Derek is HOT but more importantly the actor, I think his name is Gil, portrays his character authentically & keeps me interested in the show. Kudos!
