EXCLUSIVE: TV Land has picked up the pilot Retired at 35 to series.
The multicamera sitcom starring George Segal and Johnathan McClain has received a nine-episode order in addition to the pilot for a launch in the first quarter of 2011. Retired follows David (McClain), a successful young businessman who decides to leave the New York rat race behind and move into his father Alan’s (Segal) Florida retirement home. Co-starring on the show are Saturday Night Live alums Casey Wilson and Christine Ebersole, Jessica Walter, Josh McDermitt, Ryan Michelle Bathe, Matt Champagne, George Wyner, Jere Burns and Faye DeWitt. Retired hails from Reba alums Chris Case, Michael Hanel and Mindy Schultheis who are executive producing the new series. Case wrote the pilot script.
With the series order for Retired, TV Land is going two-for-two in its maiden scripted development cycle. For its first foray into original scripted series, the cable channel ordered two multicamera pilots, Retired and Hot in Cleveland, which was picked up to series last month for a summer premiere. Cleveland stars Segal’s Just Shoot Me cohort Wendie Malick as well as Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves and Betty White. The two new series are targeted for the network’s primetime block TV Land Prime.

I’d rather watch “Bewitched” and “I Dream of Jeannie.”
I want to contuine to watch bewitched on the weekend. On tvland. Do not remove it. Bring it back!
Carol Leifer already did this show. It was called Alright Already and aired briefly on the WB in the late ’90s.
freakin awesome! Johnathan McClain is a truly awesome guy. Couldn’t be more happier for him.
Agree 100%, I cant wait to see him in this show!
he wasnt impressive in the previews. other than that it looks good.
I am excited to hear about a new series that TV Land will air. I love TV Land, all the programs they air that I watch and remind me of my youthful days and my dear 90 year old Dad watches (loves Mash) what he wouldnt do to meet Alan Alda lol TV Land stay as you are for the most part, but like a few new programing shows.
Please don’t start airing “nasty, filthy, immoral stuff”!
Wow–I couldn’t be more thrilled that George Segal is back–he’s a national treasure (or should be!), I truly loved his work as the wicked, curmudgeonly boss on “Just Shoot Me”, and it’s going to be amazing. Also, love Wendie as well, and am looking forward to something cool, smart, and funny, for a change, on television!
TV LAND sucks
Hugely similar to former Letterman head writer Rodney Rothman’s very funny book Early Bird, which was made into a pilot a few years ago…
Exactly what I thought. I’d be shocked if this show made air given that fact – it’s got to come up now that it’s ordered.
I read Rothman’s book too, but then again there’s only like 5 new ideas out there, if that. It’s kind of like saying that Steven Bochco made a show about life as a cop already. I haven’t seen it so who knows if it’s like the book or just a similar idea, but – George Segal and Jessica Walter – I’m in.
I saw Hot in Cleveland and fell in love with Betty White all over again!! Long rock it Betty!!! She didn’t have alot of air time but when she is there she owns it! Shame that its on TV LAND, I think it would do very well on CBS perhaps NBC if handled correctly.
Maybe that’s why it’s on TV Land – because NBC would eff it up
Can’t wait. This show will be awesome!
Point taken, RJ, but I’d say it has more in common than Cop Rock and NYPD Blue do…

Variety reports that “Undeclared” collaborators Rodney Rothman and Judd Apatow will reunite to produce “Early Bird,” a comedy about a young writer who gets fired from a sweet talk-show gig, gets depressed, and moves into a retirement community.
“Rothman’s project originally started as a book, “Early Bird: a Memoir of Premature Retirement,” inspired by his own life after losing his writing gig at “Late Show With David Letterman.” Before his tome hit shelves, NBC bought it and ordered a pilot, though it was never picked up for series.
Published in May, “Bird” centers on a scribe in his late 20s who loses his television job. He then moves into a Florida senior community and learns to love the laid-back lifestyle.”
Apatow is on board as producer on the project; no word yet on who’ll direct.
I hear you. No doubt the basic idea is the same (young guy moves into retirement community), but Rothman’s was also based on his actual experiences. It just sounds to me like the fundamentals are the same but that’s the jumping off point. From the TV Land press release:
“In the pilot episode of “Retired at 35″, David (McClain), a successful young businessman decides to leave the rat race of New York City behind and move into his parents’ (Segal and Walter) Florida retirement home to reconnect with them, re-evaluate his life and live the dream of retirement that so many are working toward. While in Florida, David reunites with his best friend Brandon, (McDermitt) and realizes that his former crush Jessica (Bathe) is still as beautiful and elusive as ever. Living close by is David’s sister, Amy (Wilson) who has finally found a boyfriend Paul (Champagne). Other characters include Alan’s friend, Richard (Wyner) and David’s boss, Donald (Burns).”
From this it looks like the guy’s moving back home as opposed to running away to a retirement home. Just seems more like a “coming home” story and the retirement community is the backdrop. I’m hoping a lot of the show will be about his interactions with George Segal and Jessica Walter. (And besides, apparently this Johnathan McClain and Josh McDermitt are both awesome according to these posts
)
I mean, I feel like every two years or so I read about somebody doing a pilot called “Spellbound” about a family of witches and that doesn’t stop it from continuing to happen.
Anyway, I’m still watching this. TV Land has gone out and hired some classic talent for their two shows. Good on ‘em.
Josh McDermitt is hilarious!! I have seen him do stand-up in LA and Phoenix! I can’t wait to see him and the rest of the cast on the show!!
yea, Josh is my nephew and I am so excited to see him in this show. His stand up shows are so funny. He has become really polished.
shut your stupid mouth and listen;;PUT ON MORE HOME INPROVEMENT
Nice…they are fortunate to have Josh McDermitt..one of the funniest and hardest working raising stars in the business…
God, people are bored. More than one person who happens to be a writer can have an experience where they spent a lot of time in a retirement community. Also, this is the only network with the balls to put on people of this age going through real life issues at this age. It’s a splashy pilot purchase, but they were NEVER going to put that on the air. I happen to personally know the guy who created this show, and he’s eighty-six years old.
To clarify, NBC was never going to put Early Bird on the air.

TVLand jumped the shark a long time ago. When they started eliminating the true classics in favor of modern, junk sitcoms and faked, offensive “reality” shows, they never rebounded from their errors. When TVLand was sold off to Viacom and became an MTV Network, their entire production staff changed yielding to younger morons running the network. Morons who obviously don’t value classic programs from the 50′s, 60′s and 70′s. There’s a BIG audience out there, both young and old, who value those classic TV shows. What few classics TVLand does show are butchered, cut episodes to allow more commercials to be aired. How painful is it to watch episodes of Bewitched and I Dream Of Jeannie and having key scenes deleted. Approximately five to seven minutes of run time are deleted on these shows. As for TVLand’s new venture in producing their own so-called sitcoms, Retired at 35 is as dull as a butcher knife used to scrape mortar off of used house bricks; Hot in Cleveland is just plain pathetic. It’s painful to see Betty White demoted to such a lowly role on such a two-bit production. A veteran actress like Betty doesn’t deserve that. TVLand has been on my do not watch list for a long time now.
“Hot In Cleveland” & “Retired at 35″ are HORRIBLE !!!! Shows filled with STUPID jokes and one line IDIOTIC dialog where NOBODY IS FUNNY !!!!
These are just 2 more MORONIC “comedies” that have RUINED TV Land !!!
The MAJORITY of viewers want the CLASSIC COMEDIES !!! Shows that are REALLY COMEDIES, NOT STUPIDITIES !!!
If they must keep showing those UNFUNNY STUPID shows, then ONLY play them on their regular Wednesdays at 10:00 Pm where the DUMBED DOWN people can see them !!!!!
Keep those LOUSY “Shows” off the air during the day when the GREAT COMEDIES ARE ON !!!!
Retired at 35 is just plain pathetic. I think it’s been dumped? Hot in Cleveland can go with the wind too. I love Betty White in all of her roles prior to Hot in Cleveland. TVland thankfully has dumped its mentally challenged “reality” shows, but lately it’s just back to back episodes of inferior comedies, The Nanny, Roseanne, Everybody Loves Raymond and King of Queens. My, such a stomach churning variety of unloved presentations. TVland is just another reason why cable and satellite TV is such a ripoff!
