The cable network issued a news release today from Jeff Wachtel, president, original programming, USA Network and co-head, original content, Universal Cable Productions, announcing the development slate of 7 new pilot scripts from Steve Carell (“The Office”), John Michael Higgins (“Best in Show”), and Anthony Edwards (“ER”). Additionally, USA showrunners Steve Franks, creator of PSYCH, and John McNamara, executive producer of IN PLAIN SIGHT, along with FACING KATE writer Jan Nash, are in talks to develop projects, “demonstrating the network’s confidence in its current series collaborators… These new projects all combine strong characters and superior storytelling, offering viewers the kind of exceptionally written, aspirational originals they won’t find anywhere else.” USA’s upcoming slate includes:
A LEGAL MIND
One of Manhattan’s top corporate lawyers goes on a recruiting trip and hires the only guy that impresses him, a brilliant but unmotivated college dropout. This early twenty something has barely coasted through life on his natural intelligence and copious amounts of marijuana. Now, as he impersonates a bright young professional, he might even become a real adult. From writer Aaron Korsh (“The Deep End”) and executive producers David Bartis and Gene Klein of Dutch Oven. From Universal Cable Productions.ROBYN
After her financier father’s fraudulent dealings are exposed, a young woman realizes she’s done nothing substantial with her own life. Initially attempting to be a do-gooder, she finds it much more satisfying (and effective) to rip off the decadent upper class. Rather than keep the proceeds for herself, though, she redistributes the wealth by giving it to the exploited underclass. Becky Hartman Edwards (“Parenthood,” “Life On Mars”) is the executive producer/writer. From Universal Cable Productions.GAY WALCH PROJECT
Karyn Burke, a suburban supermom to three kids, wakes up one morning and finds her husband has left town because he was in too deep to mob boss Tommy. Now, Karen’s left to clean up his mess by paying off her husband’s gambling debt and becoming Tommy’s new “fixer.” It’s just one more priority on her weekly to do list. Executive producer is Burrad Marsh (Shed Media) and Gay Walch (“Summerland”) is writer. From Universal Cable Productions.STICK
Chris “Stick” Blake is a player in the NHL prominently featured in the majority of the top 10 hockey fights on YouTube. He just got suspended from his team, and now has to attend court ordered anger management classes. He’s not a bad guy… he just loses it when people are bullied. After an old friend shows up with a life-threatening problem, Stick focuses his considerable energies on solving it and discovers a new line of work—helping people that the law can’t. From writers Mark Altman & Steve Kriozere (“Castle”) and Executive Producers Steve Stark (“Medium,” “Girlfriends”) and Russ Buchholz (FACING KATE). From Universal Cable Productions.UNTITLED JOHN MICHAEL HIGGINS / INSURANCE ADJUSTER PROJECT
From Steve Carell (“The Office”) and John Michael Higgins (“Best in Show”), this project is about Bob Welsh, a crusading middle class insurance investigator who proves that sometimes the dullest jobs are the most exciting as he ferrets out high stakes dramas. Higgins writes with Margaret Higgins. Joining Carell (Carousel Television) as executive producer is Thom Hinkle (“Rockford Files”). From Universal Cable Productions. From Universal Cable Productions.UNTITLED CULLEN BROTHERS PROJECT
Two estranged brothers end up on the same FBI task force. One brother is a by-the-book profiler who lived in his brother’s shadow. The other is a shoot-first-ask-questions later type who must now report to his brother. Executive Producers are Dave Broome (“Biggest Loser”) and Steven Burnett from 25/7 Productions. Aaron Kaplan (“Funny in Farsi”, “You Me and Dupree”), Jim Clemente (“Criminal Minds”) and Tim Clemente (“Copout,” “Heist”) also executive produce. Writers are Mark Cullen and Rob Cullen (“Las Vegas”). From Universal Cable Productions.THE VELVET HAMMER
Houston-native Candy Carter returns home but she’s not the same Texas debutante who left – she has two kids, she’s divorced and she’s an FBI agent. Back home, she uses her brains and beauty to help out her fellow proud Texans while getting back in touch with her Southern roots. From writers Gail Gilchriest and Kevin Murphy, executive producers Anthony Edwards (“ER”) and Cheryl Dolins of Grand Central Entertainment with CBS Television Studios.
USA is the home to eight original scripted series: BURN NOTICE, ROYAL PAINS, WHITE COLLAR, PSYCH, IN PLAIN SIGHT, LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT, this summer’s COVERT AFFAIRS and FACING KATE, which will air this fall.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

These are such mediocre shows. In Plain Sight? Just crap.
A person like you shouldn’t be talking.
Outside of In Plain Sight I watch all their original scripted series, and routinely find them better than the network shows we watch.
USA has done a great job picking shows these past 6-8 years
Somewhere, an NBC affiliate exec is crapping his pants.
USA would be well-advised to find a replacement for Law & Order: Criminal Intent. After tomorrow night’s departure of series regulars Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe, viewership is expected to decline dramatically. Jeff Goldblum will step into D’Onofrio’s role after originally joining the cast following Chris Noth’s departure in 2008. One has to wonder who is in charge of casting for this series when Noth’s Detective Mike Logan is replaced by an actor best-known for his roles in “The Big Chill”, “The Fly,” and “Jurassic Park.” Goldblum is no Chris Noth much less Vincent D’Onofrio.
“Independence Day”?
currently home to eight scripted and soon to be seven more.Just wondering out loud how many of the new pilots will have African American leads ? The eight that are on now i believe have only one.
That is because Blacks are 12.5% of the population, and only 40% of that group is middle class. When Black and Middle class describes 5% of the population, there is not much demand to see Black leads.
Or lets put it this way, when the NBA is more than 2% White, and the NFL is more than 30% White, people will care about the relative lack of Black leads on Broadcast and Cable TV shows. As it is, Blacks are far over-represented in TV commercials, you’d think to watch them that almost everyone in America was middle class and Black. But then Advertising is about winning agencies awards, not selling the actual product.
Get a Life, stop crying black this Black that ,the most rascist people are black people them selves-chris rock- bernie mack, the blacks in the nba and NFL combine salaries can pay off the nations deficit/ but hey keep buying rims guys /gold teeth / help haiti.look at oprah /oh -let me guess black people shes a sell out /you guys give it up already slavery was 400 plus years ago,
Okay. I thought your first paragragh at least made some sense from a statistical point of view.
And then… you veered off into a racist teabaggy rant about how there are too many blacks in McDonalds commercials, started mourning the loss of the days when coloreds weren’t allowed to play professional sports, and wailed to the heavens that the Cosbys just aren’t a realistic representation of negroes in Amurika.
Yuck!
Those sound atrocious. Are they serious? Stick? Really?
This is a joke, right? These loglines sound like Paddy Chayefsky wrote them for “Network.” They’re all the same show: passive character becomes active by a) being kicked in the ass; or b) having an epiphany; and then recaptures his/her roots/muse.
Can’t say I’m a fan of USA but I will be looking forward to see Robyn and The Velvet Hammer.
Sorry, these are scripts going to pilot or pitches going to script?
I am already dreading “The Velvet Hammer” I bet it makes the folks in Houston (my home) look like a bunch of uneducated rednecks; which we are VERY seriously far from being.
I can see from the descriptions USA no longer wants male viewers.
@whiskey
okay, we get it. you’re white and male and pissed off that there are too many blacks in commercials and way too many women-centric shows (although they are the majority of our population, so there goes your population argument)
you would have been so happy when everyone from the nightly anchors to the President were all members of the same frat
others are happy that everyone gets a chance to entertain/lead these days
Who announces a slate of script development? This is laughable not only in its reach creatively, but in its hubris. Does anyone care about any of this?
STICK sounds like a parody, so on the nose.
As long as USA hangs onto WWE Monday Night Raw you can be assured that 10 million All-American guys will be watching.
I read the Velvet Hammer (and a bunch of the others, too) and it was one of the worst pilot scripts I have ever read. Cheryl! What were you thinking? Stands no chance of getting on the air.
USA doing a better job of picking series lately— more WHITE COLLAR, less garbage like PSYCH, 4400, and BURN N.
The insurance one and the cop brothers one sound alright, with the insurance one being the only one I will probably check out for being about something different. The rest sound like crap and whoever the exec is who found and developed these should be shot.
Psych Psucks. It needs to end so USA can fill its spot with more exciting things like Burn Notice and White Collar.
Stick? The Velvet Hammer? Hackneyed crap. Really, how many USA Network shows do we need where some guy or gal is helping people out of their troubles? Psych! In Pain Sight! Burn Notice! White Collar!
More of the crappy same ol’ same ol’.
The Velvet Hammer? Really. The Velvet Hammer. Someone should be ashamed of herself.
And, do we need another cop/FBI show??? No!!!
I love Psych.
Long live Shawn Spencer and Burton Guster!
When the premise of White Collar came out, it sounded truly stupid (as did Royal Pains). Both wound up being great shows.
I love all the programming that USA has come out with (short of Psych and Monk, but they’re pretty popular). USA seems to slam out some of the best television out there.
I’m up in Canada a lot these days and I miss USA. I only get to watch when I’m home…which is a shame.
Is In Plain Sight being renewed?
I have been out of the country for several years. I have recently returned. The USA Network programming includes almost all white characters.
I believe the network should change the name from USA Network to something that reflects the current slant in their programming.
I am sorry to see that many elements in the USA have not yet changed.
Can anybody confirm that Law and Order Criminal Intent has been renewed through 2011 please?
