Warner Bros has set Batman 3 for release on July 20, 2012, according to an internal email just sent by distribution chief Dan Fellman. There is no official start of production date at this point because Chris Nolan just completed Inception, the film that opens July 16. The film is expected to be done in 3D, as studio chief Alan Horn told theater owners at ShoWest that all Warner Bros tent poles will be done that way. Of course, Nolan will make the final decision, he’s the most dominant director presence the studio has. Nolan’s brother and oft-collaborator Jonathan Nolan has been working on the script, based on a story hatched by the writer and David Goyer. Goyer simultaneously is writing the next Superman installment, which is being godfathered by Nolan based on an idea he and Goyer hatched together. No word on when that gets into production.

In 3D? Christopher Nolan and his DP have given interviews where they state their lack of enthusiasm for 3D. Nolan is much more attracted by the potential of Imax film cameras.
Nolan is not doing 3D in anyway. His editorial cuts are not suitable for the format. IMAX definitely, 3D not happening unless they can dramatically improve the process.
Filmed in 3D or converted?
Hope they bring back Anthony Michael Hall, and give him more to do than sit at the anchor desk or look terrified as a hostage. Huge fan of The Dead Zone and I want to see him on screen again.
Doesn’t matter how much Warner Bros. wants them to, there’s no way Nolan and Pfister cave and shoot Batman in 3D.
Who’s the villian?
Holy box office gross, Batman!
The film is NOT expected to be done in 3D.
this is great news, i’m happy Nolan will be on the Superman project. We need a Dark Knight version of Superman. The man of steel needs the justice he deserves, i mean he gets it in Smallville, why do they treat Superman with hostility in the films, yoh Hollywood makes my head shake.
Thank god! there is a light at the end of this hellish hollywood tunnel where one MESS after another is released weekend after weekend. The only light I’ve seen coming so far this year is Inception.
great batman ideal and is, gonna badasss.
It will be interesting to see if Nolan uses IMAX cameras to film the movie, which he used for parts of The Dark Knight and all of Inception or if he uses James Cameron’s 3D camera system since it is apparently going to be in 3D.
We’ll see about 3D. Nolan’s DP gave an interview a couple weeks ago in which he said neither of them had any interest or desire to shot in 3D and they both hate shooting digitally and that they would actually like to shoot the whole thing with IMAX cameras (assuming they return). WB could upconvert the thing but I seriously doubt a meticulous control freak like Nolan would allow that. Nolan has the pull in the industry to stand up to the studio (especially if Inception is a hit) but there is chance Nolan and the studio could be on a crash course.
Nolan, Goyer, Bale = GODS.
Screw Superman, no one cares. The body’s still not cold from Singer’s roast job.
Focus on hunting the Dark Knight, guys. We need this. The WORLD needs this!
Marked my calendar! This is the movie that will beat Avaturd…for sure and no 3D or that blue smurfs gimmicks….
According to sequel theory: This movie will suck.
Sequel Theory: Unless based on a classic novel, (e.s. Return Of The King, Harry Potter) the third movie sequel will always suck balls. SEE ALSO “Third Turd Theory”
The third movie which is always done for money, greed or ego always fails because there is no passion in it.
Alien 3
Jaws 3
Spiderman 3
Matrix 3
Godfather 3
Rambo 3
Return of the Jedi
Batman Forever
Superman 3
X-Men 3
Star Trek 3
Mission Impossible 3
X-Files 3
Blade Trinity
Terminator 3
There’s gotta be more. Help me out people!
Mission Impossible 3 wasn’t that bad. JJ Abrams did a good job.
Nor was there ever an X-Files 3. There were only two major motion-pictures in that series.
HEY WAIT… There is no X-files 3.
Please lord, let the Mayans not be right about 2012
So, Superman in 2013 maybe? Isn’t that when DC loses the other half of the Superman rights? Does anybody really understand the ramifications of that lawsuit? It’s too confusing. At least Smallville had a good episode tonight. So I am pleased on that Superman front. On the DC front, we get the boring War of the Supermen, which I’m skipping. Also, the horrible Secret Origins. Comic book Superman is ridiculous trash right now. OTOH, I’m very pleased with Smallville right now, whereas I hated seasons 6&7. So everything is cyclical. If we can avoid the stupid “Dark Superman” idea, I may be pleased on the movie front as well. Here is hoping.
@Eddie: He didn’t use any IMAX cameras on INCEPTION.
please please PLEASE don’t let this movie be in 3D. for the love of God. IMAX, yes, 3D, no.
Talia al Ghul for the villain/love interest. She can romance Bruce Wayne and try to kill Batman for revenge for her father’s death. It’s perfect! And hell no to Angelina or Megan Fox, how about Anne Hathaway or even better, Breaking Bad’s Krysten Ritter! Then Talia and Bats can unite against a common foe, Hush or The Riddler or both!
Let’s hope the Mayans were wrong about 2012!
I bet Marion Cottilard will be on B3.
Cottilard is French for Catwoman
Marion Cotillard as Talia = Brilliant! (I wish I thought of it!)
loved memento. hated insomnia and the prestige. i’m convinced nolan can only do batman. and there’s nothing wrong with that.
nothing can help superman. it is what it is. a 30-something man in spandex and a cape. it was fine for the 80s because it was a campy decade. but comic fans seem a bit more serious these days. when camp makes a comes back so will the caped crusader.
I would argue his Batman’s no great shakes either; it’s better than Burton and Shumacher, but he’s still the wrong man for the job.(Mind you, I’m hard pressed to name an established director who’s RIGHT for it… but Warners should have gone with Raimi back when they had the chance- he would have done better with The Bat than he did with Spidey, although in both cases the studio brass would have gotten in the way…)
3 D is here to stay. I hope Nolan will get over his pride and embrace the future or else he’s going to stay in the past.
Not until 2012! That sure seems like a long wait- guess the 3D makes it more exciting to wait for now though!
the riddler in 3d
@anonymous…MI:3 didnt suck at all. Just got overshadowed by that whole ‘Cruise jumping on couches’ wave of publicity…JJ did a great job on that…back to Bat3…I seriously doubt if C. Nolan will shoot in 3D. 2012 couldnt come sooner!!!…oh and saw IronMan2 Saturday and not at all lived up to expectations…a bit CAMPY if you ask me.
