Mark Cuban owns less than 2% of The Weinstein Co. He’s a lowly shareholder, not a board member. So who gives a flying fuck what he thinks or says about anything affecting the company? Only the moronic media. Suddenly today, reports claimed Cuban is going to block the Ron Burkle/Weinstein Brothers/Fortress-Colbeck hedge fund negotiation for Miramax underway now with Disney. Uh, how? Besides, everyone knows that Cuban’s real quarrel with the Weinsteins stems from the release of last year’s The Road.
(Cuban wanted The Weinstein Co to go wide while Harv only platformed. Like that’s never happened before. But I happen to agree with Cuban on this.) Now, if The Weinstein Co’s bigtime creditors were speaking out against the Miramax pending deal, that would be a different matter. But they’re not. (Probably, because The Weinstein Co stands to make fees for distributing the Miramax library.) Besides, Cuban, when he said he was “having issues” with The Weinstein Co never specifically said anything about Miramax. Looks like the media got it wrong. Anyway, now The Weinstein Co has issued the following statement to members of the press to “clarify” the situation:
On behalf of The Weinstein Company and the Board of directors, I am going on record to say that we couldn’t be more excited about the possibility of The Weinstein Company being in business with Ron Burkle, Fortress and the possibility of an acquisition of Miramax. While no Miramax deal has been completed, we give our full support to Bob and Harvey in their efforts on behalf of the Weinstein Company in relation to Miramax.
Any board member who speaks to a member of the press is in violation of a confidentiality agreement and the Board will pursue that vigorously.
Mark Cuban is one of our shareholders who we admire greatly. He is not on the Board and it is our understanding that the issue he spoke to the press about is regarding the distribution of a movie he produced called The Road. The dispute is limited to the amount of theaters it played. We have been diligently working to rectify this situation. The Road is a movie that we are all proud of, and only wish it could have done better at the box office.
Very truly yours,
Richard Koenigsberg
Board Member, The Weinstein Company

That is basically the same statement TWC releases after every film release. Cuban is right but he should have spoken up months ago; prior to the release of The Road. Everyone in town knew TWC was going to ” dump” every film to support NINE and then when they figured out NINE was a disappointment they put their efforts to Inglorious. Any other distributor or the old Harvey of old MMX times would have gotten The ROAD nominated in a few categories, even with other potential films, especially this year with ten films for best picture. I thought the film wasn’t perfect but it was a great adaptation and was definitely better than NINE and a couple other films that received noms. It got my vote. When will both sides learn? TWC messed up with this film but its more sad for the actors and directors and crew who put their heart in it. It seems Cuban just wants a financial settlement. I only wish he made it a bigger issue before the release.
You speak as if you’re in the industry, and therefore you should know better than to ask when both sides will learn
Not going to happen anytime soon, is the best answer I have.
If Cuban believed in “The Road” so much he should have released it through his Magnolia film division, but if he did that it would have played in a hand full of theaters and been released on home video and video on demand the same day. Maybe Cuban should focus on the studio he owns more than 2% in. After all “The Road” made $2 million more than the highest grossing film from his Magnolia film company, so The Weinstein’s still did a better job than he could have done on his own.
i’m sick of that fucking tongue picture…
Nikki – having dealt directly with Mark I want you to know I think he is a terrific guy. He’s ballsy and usually takes on the bully’s. If you knew him you’d love him. I’d like to think you two are cut from the same cloth. Regarding The Road. He’s absolutely right. Want to make certain that a movie makes tiny box office? Release it in few theaters. If real movies were released on 3,500 screens like the unwatchable crap out there now, people would see them because they would have a choice. After all, we go to the movies on the weekend nights and if there is only crap we see only crap. We do not seek out the great films in small theaters. Thank God for Mark Cuban and his Landmark Theaters. We can now see real movies in the comfort of a 21st Century theater. As for blocking the Weinsteins, good for Mark. In my mind he can do no wrong. We need people like him, especially in business. I only wish he could take on Geitner, Lloyd Frankenstein and those schmucks.
Thank you, Mark.
Although Cuban is a bag of dildos (dildoes?), owning 2% of a company generally makes one a lot more than a lowly shareholder. 3% is often enough for a seat on the board.
Battle of the blowhards.
At least Cuban made a slew of great ballsy films over the last 5 years – The Road, Enron, Good Night Good Luck, We Own The Night, Two Lovers, Akeelah’s Bee, Food Inc.
Harvey, not so much.
Yeah — Cuban and Todd Wagner have pretty awesome taste in movies overall — Magnolia puts out some excellent stuff and has had an impressive number of their docs nominated for Oscars. I’d even argue the Magnolia library is more valuable than the Weinstein Company’s simply because it’s FILLED with great films that people will be watching/discovering for years to come.
Of course your position would be wrong, but yes, you could argue.
There are 7 Billion people in the world and around 700 Billionaires. Money talks. Always has. Always will. Money ( regardless of who holds it ) will always be taken seriously.
Shut up Cuban.
Ted, you’re a tool.
Very true Mr. Turner, very true.
Both of these initial two post are written by Mark.
And he has a point.
Mark Cuban should be taken a little more seriously, since as a media mogul, he could probably buy this website, and then shut it down if he wanted to be mean, then maybe Nikki would “give a flying fuck”. But, I like Mark quite a bit, he’s done some very good things for charities, and his HD channels he owns are pretty cool. He also takes good care of his Dallas Mavericks.
With all due respect Mr. Cuban, please stop posting here.
Just another daily fucking delivered by Harvey to anyone who is dumb enough (or greedy enough) to bend over and take it. You can open the DGA, WGA and PGA directory, close your eyes and point to any names in any of them, and you come up with someone Harvey has fucked over. Mark Cuban should have known better. Why Ron Burkle would think twice about getting into bed with Weinstein is beyond me. This is going to play out one way and it won’t be to Burkle’s satisfaction.
Nikki: You’re reporting is relevant so why lower your journalistic prestige by adding “flying fuck” to your article? You’re better than that.
I kinda like “flying fuck.”
Viggo Mortenson? Don’t make me laugh! He’s an AWFUL actor, he almost killed LOTR! Why didn’t the director of LOTR keep the original Brit guy – he has way more presence than dull Viggo.
Oh and I loved We Own The Night, but the other stuff on Cuban’s list is crap crap crap.
Not that I like TWC or Harvey. Awful people.
