James Cameron’s Avatar retail sales (not including rental sales) have reached 19.7 million Blu-ray disc and DVDs combined worldwide by its third week in release, according to 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. (By comparison, The Dark Knight sold approximately 16 million units worldwide on Blu-ray and DVD combined in its 3rd week.) Internationally, Avatar displaces Harry Potter 5 as the biggest selling title since the launch of DVD. Meanwhile, its Blu-ray disc sales are at 6.2 million – - more than double the industry standard for the high definition format. Avatar is now the biggest Blu-ray release of all time worldwide with no sign of slowing down.

And yet still no overtime or pay raises or temps. Thanks Fox. Really great news.
Who buys this sh*t?
I do. And I’m not some dumb-assed, indiscriminate film fan either.
Put that in your teenie weenie pipe and smoke it.
Proof we have more idiots on earth that on Navi.
Gosh, who would have thought they’d cover their production and marketing budget with DVD alone.
I’m outta the loop. What was the deal with the Blu-ray fallout?
I remember everyone saying this movie was all hype, all special effects, all visual 3D gimmick, and no story, AND WOULD NOT sell on DVD…
LOL I guess once again the Avatar haters were wrong.
I am so happy for Avatar’s success on dvd. And i am glad the box-office success is also reflected in dvd sales even with a stripped down version of the film. Can’t believe a film with no specials is doing this well. I have my copy and will be waiting patiently for future editions.
Me too. Very happy.
Exactly, where’s that tool Whiskey that posted all that nonsense about this movie on making a slim profit. Cameron is officially hater proof.
i don’t buy the DVD and i only saw once the movie:i yet saw four times “dances with wolves” so i don’t need to see again “Avatar” ;D
Actually, the only reason the DVDs are selling is because they’ve been reduced to $12 each. Though it still looks bad for Blu-Ray, because it should be selling more units, not less.
How did this movie not win for best director? The Oscar category is “best achievement in film direction”. What is film direction? How is this movie not a triumph in film direction? Is this not comparable to Peter Jackson’s vision and execution of LOTR: Return of the King? Is it that Cameron did not win because Lucas didn’t win for Star Wars in 1977, nor Spielberg for ET in 1982? Will a sci-fi movie EVER win for best picture, screenplay, and director?
