EXCLUSIVE: ABC’s drama pilot Edgar Floats is living up to its name, staying afloat despite missing the cut for a series order from the network this week. ABC has ordered six additional scripts from the project, from Warner Bros. TV and writer Rand Ravich. Edgar Floats stars Tom Cavanagh as a police psychologist who becomes a bounty hunter. Both Ravich’s script and the pilot directed by Jace Alexander received good marks but some suggested Edgar might be too quirky and character driven for broadcast and feels more like a cable series. There were even some rumblings that the pilot could be taken to USA Network if ABC passes. That, of course, is out of the question for now because ABC appears to be still very interested in the show.

Glad someone recognizes a good show when they see it. This pilot was a great script and well executed. I particularly like Robert Patrick in it.
I wish that Changelings/Betwixt could be resurrected with the CW or another network despite being passed on as well!!!!!
Would be, if it was a good script. It’s not. Stop trying to pump that garbage up. That’s all I see, and it’s coming from the same one or two people.
If your show isn’t good enough to get picked up by CW, then it’s terrible. Get over it.
Stop trolling comment threads and get back into you momma’s basement, “um”!
You wish I lived in my mom’s basement. I have a career. You have a dead pilot.
So…Tom Cavanagh would play yet another quirky character named Ed?
Any chance of a similar reprieve for “Most Likely To Succeed”? Thought it was a great script, also well-executed, and tested really high… In fact, I thought that it too, seemed destined to live up to its name.
I’m sure this is a great script… no doubt… but for the love of God can we please start infusing some more original thought into these cop series.
Love the guy, but just can’t see Tom Cavanagh carrying a series. Trust Me and Love Monkey bombed!
Maybe Rand can put a call into Damian Lewis
So excited .. Me too , love Robert Patrick .. Mi
amazing pilot. amazing cast. so glad to hear this!!!
This must be Susan Rovner at work. WB in the past has let great pilots die too easily without a fight. They have previously hated going back in the ring after a no. Rovner is smart to stick with something good and not let it die because the network is tripping over its own feet.
Ravich was amazing in Life. The scripts were counter to TV dogma. While pursuing tough material, never wallowing in darkness and faux-hip edginess, rather Ravich made a hero constantly striving towards Light.
Unlike ANYTHING on TV then or now. Completely original.
As for TV shows, if you want an active male hero able to go anywhere, do anything, question people, from the lowest of the low to the highest of the high, he’ll be a detective, either private or some sort of cop. Lawyers are courtroom bound, and too much Law and Order made that stale for the next ten years. No one wants a gritty spy series, with real actual Muslim villains (like the guys who sawed off Daniel Pearl’s head — KSM and Ahmed Sheik). No one wants a war series (too real and expensive). Anti-heroes are both cliche and boring, by now.
The only other obvious choice is of course … superhero. ABC is part of the Disney family. If they were smart (and they aren’t), they’d use ABC as a cheap development pad for a series of movies extending the Marvel lineup, beyond the planned Avengers/Iron Man/Thor/Captain America/Hulk characters and movies. With second-tier characters. Marvel owns Malibu, why not use those characters? With on-screen tie-ins to the Marvel/Disney movies.
But … no. That would require an actual plan to use valuable intellectual property across all media outlets to make actual money.
But barring superhero, cop/private eye is the only way for a male lead character to get into a lot of situations that provide varied dramatic interest.
YES!! Alicia Witt on network TV
Wont get to see it in ireland but good to hear alica witt is bk on tv
Wont get to see it in ireland good to hear alica witt is on tv
Good script + Good Pilot ep + TERRIBLE Title = pass.
Want to save the show, change that name!!
Rand Ravich is an amazing writer… and it’s my hope that the series does go to cable to prevent another network from killing a great show prematurely (like NBC did with LIFE). Network audiences (and execs) are apparently to dumb to recognize amazing television when it’s presented to them. Hopefully this show has a life that lasts many years.
Dream come true! Love Jace’s directing work on Rescue Me over the years. Love character-driven drama. Somebody at ABC has vision!!
Good going ABC!! I loved LIFE…these writers are smart,
and make us think as viewers. And they have a producer
named not George Lukas, but Lukas George…so they have
to be doing something right!
Loucas George is one of the primary reasons why “Life” wasn’t able to survive (and why EF should find a new line producer asap). He is one of the WORST in the business. With all of the available talents who could properly guide and protect such extraordinary material, it is a perpetual shock (to many) that Rand and Far would choose to work with one of the most corrupt and unqualified bumblers in the business. Please- if anyone reading this knows Rand, PLEASE tell him to ditch his ham-fisted dilettante before it is too late (yet again). Loucas is a danger to light itself.
i really liked the Edgar Floats script, but why pick up the show when Castle is on? ITS THE SAME EXACT SHOW
This was a really good script, and the minute they cast Cavanaugh, it was doomed. He’s getting into Jesse Bradford/Eric Balfour territory, people.
Amazing to see raoul trujillo show his range, he is well known for his villain and warrior roles but this is refreshing to see a latino/indio actor in this kind of series !
