Akiva Goldsman, who began as a writer and branched into producing, is now taking a turn in the director’s chair.
Goldsman has closed a deal to helm Man and Wife, a 20th Century Fox drama about an assassin who’s hired to kill a family but becomes conflicted when he falls in love with them. Alan McElroy wrote the script and Jason Keller is rewriting. Chernin Entertainment’s Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark will produce with Ralph Winter. Clark, the former Universal exec, has history with Goldsman on films like Cinderella Man. The film had been a rumored vehicle for Goldsman.
Goldsman is also a producer on Fair Game, which just premiered in Cannes and will be released by Summit, as well as the upcoming Warner Bros drama Jonah Hex, which stars Josh Brolin and Megan Fox. Goldsman is also set to adapt Stephen King’s Dark Tower as a Ron Howard-directed trilogy that Imagine’s Brian Grazer will produce with Goldsman and King. That deal is still making, but the plan is to generate films and a concurrent TV series. A deal is expected to close shortly at Universal.
Stephen King’s ‘Dark Tower’ Set For Film Trilogy, TV Series By ‘Beautiful Mind’ Trio

Glad to see Ralph Winter back with Fox. He’s a good man and a fantastic producer.
Ditto that! This town needs more good guys like Ralph.
Seems this premise has been done countless times before….killer falls in love with target.
Every premise has been done countless times. There is NOTHING new,
Our company just optioned one of his scripts – Hometown Hero. Unlike Fox – We LOVE original scripts and concepts.
It’s like Rodger Ebert said “It’s not what a movie is about, but how it is about”.
Any word on how this will affect his involvement with ‘Fringe’? I’d safely guess he’ll remain as a producer, but with a bit less involvement. I’d miss his presence on ‘Fringe’, he’s nearly redeemed himself for “A Beautiful Mind”.
A BEAUTIFUL MIND is one of the most overrated movies of recent times. And it forced us to endure Russell Crowe for way longer than we should have. Russell has the sexual appeal of the Michelin Man.
Well said.
But he will never be able to redeem himself for “Batman & Robin.”
RockyF!! You’re right!! Gah!!!! “Batman & Robin” resides in a list of black hole films in my head. If Mr. Goldsman were as dashing and eye appealing as George Clooney, then perhaps such (full) redemption would be possible. Damn my superficiality.
He also killed the “LOST IN SPACE” franchise in its infancy.
Akiva Goldsman has mediocre-d his way to the top.
Whenever someone asks why movies generally suck, a good short-hand answer is the following simple fact:
“Akiva Goldsman is one of Hollywood’s biggest writers.”
O.
Ver.
Rated.
Hack-iva is apparently a decent enough fellow, but judging on the work alone he must be the single most overpaid, least talented guy in the entire town. 4 million for Angels and Demons? Is it really grounds for coronation to write terrible films that stumble into making lots of money? The guy is Ron Howard’s valet.
Which is why it is not a terrible shock that the bracing, fresh premise he has chosen for his directing debut is…. wait for it …. hit man has doubts! Wow! That’s almost as original as two trash-talking buddy cops or Boy and Girl dislike each other and then fall in love.
Wake me when Hack-iva’s reign ends.
Um… nobody has ever said, or written, the phrase Akiva is “a decent enough fellow” before. Nobody.
Mike, if you think this is Goldsman’s ‘directing debut’ as your piece suggests, all I can say is you haven’t been watching Fringe these past several months. Perhaps ‘feature directing debut’ would be more accurate?
THANK GOD! Keep him busy there! Anything to keep him away from writing movies! He ruined the old Batman franchise, and ripped down Lost In Space before it even had a chance to start one. This guy’s bad jokes & terrible ideas are a plague to scriptwriting.
NONE of us are right. Furious D is the only “right answer” to anything. He and “anhonestanswer”. Frankly, none of us should have an opinion without hearing Furious D’s opinion first. For his all-knowing voice is the only one necessary to be heard. Long live Furious D…
Will Akiva build in one of his patented themes for mouth-breathers? You know, like in I AM LEGEND…”Light up the darkness.”
That’s the theme.
That’s it. As deep as it gets, people.
*Simplistic* doesn’t even begin to capture this man’s story-telling signature. A Beautiful Mind…Cinderella Man…Constantine…Batman & Robin…cliche after cliche, one great scene that reveals the hook and 40 other scenes padding it, all swaddled in cotton for the “global audience,” which we know means uneducated dullards in all the hell holes around the world who won’t hesitate to give his hack their two shillings.
And I didn’t even mention the plot of this new one. Assassin falling in love? Sheesh.
Mediocrity is the path to our destruction. And this guy is about as mediocre as they come.
I wish he would prove me wrong with something original. But I’m not going to hold my breath.
I need to be more cynical. I tried to give the guy props for his involvement on ‘Fringe’. I can see now, after all these incredibly valid points that I worked hard to ignore, the truth is now inevitable. $4 million for “Angels and Demons”. I’ll likely cry myself to sleep tonight.
Good for him!
Wow, lots of bitter writers on here. Best of luck with it, Akiva!
