Off-network bids for Warner Bros.’ Big Bang Theory were due at 9 AM PT this morning. TBS, FX, USA have all submitted their offers along with Viacom, with smaller players also in the mix. The price is expected to hover around $1 million an episode, which was the record price tag for a sitcom cable sale fetched by Seinfeld in its first deal with TBS. Most observers expect the final fee to go north of $1 million, setting a new record. While all players are expected to be aggressive — FX already has Big Bang‘s companion Two And a Half Men, USA is looking to get into the half-hour comedy business — “it will be a shocker if TBS doesn’t land the show,” an insider said. Besides being in the Time Warner family, TBS has a great need for Big Bang, which it is hoping to use as a strong lead-in for the new Conan O’Brien talk show. For now, it appears that cable nets will share the show with broadcast stations. But it is theoretically possible that a cabler ponies up $2 million an episode for exclusive rights.

Interesting to note that TBS seems to be flush with cash right now while the major networks have some serious cash flow issues. $2M an episode is pretty crazy though!
chalk up another victory for Chuck Lorre and Jimmy Burrows. We’ll be talking about the same situation for MIKE AND MOLLY in a couple years.
Oh, good. Chuck Lorre needs more money. Maybe he can buy a heart.
This show is UNWATCHABLE.
Never laughed once.
I’ve TRIED. More than once. I pretty much give anything a chance.
But the writing…the over-acting…the seemingly intentional stab at mediocrity…it is the definition of uninspired.
Even Two and a Half Men has some good jokes in there now and then. I’ve got through almost a full episode of THAT.
But, seriously, who else loathes this pile of crap show? Please tell me I’m not alone!
p.s. And save the “Chuck Lorre is a success because he’s a class act” posts, no one cares and kissing his ass on an internet forum ain’t gonna score you points.
It’s a show about a bunch of ugly male nerds and one hot girl. That’s enough to be successful these days.
God forbid it’s ever the other way around though.
who in the world ever said, “chuck lorre is a success because he’s a class act”????
and if you were referring to my post, I don’t need to kiss ass. I already work with these people. my job is safe.
it’s just pathetic that people always want to bag on something primarily because it is a success.
besides “outing bad comedies” what do you do? i have a sticking suspicion you are one of the many bitter, umemployed writers with an axe to grind.
sorry. i’m not. don’t hate on chuck because he’s successful. he may not be a nice man, but his talent as a show runner and creator is indisputable.
Eyechart, let me respond very clearly to your points…
-you didn’t say he was a class act, I was referring to the general trend on this site of someone saying that the reason X GUY is more successful than Y GUY is because X GUY is a nice person, which is utter bullshit. It’s just an annoyance, no big deal.
-If you truly are a writer on this show, I don’t care how much you’re making or how you got the job…your work makes me sick. The punchlines on this show are so incredibly bad that they wouldn’t get a laugh in a sketch comedy roundtable at an improv theater. I know because I’ve taken those classes and the writing quality is better than The Big Bang Theory. I’m not exaggerating or being petty or spiteful; your writing is just bad. It makes me burn with anger that you’re actually employed when I could find better joke writing any day of the week at any comedy club in L.A. or New York. I hear lines on your show that shock me that they actually made it to air, that 8 writers in a room couldn’t improve them or one showrunner would actually approve that draft. Yes, there’s crappy writing on many other sitcoms but those other crappy sitcoms aren’t #1!!
-Yes, I’m in the biz and no I’m not at your pay grade. But my point is that pay does not mean talent. Same for Chuck Lorre; he knows how to make pablum for the masses and he’s good enough in the room to get ahead. He’s a business man, not a creative talent. And no, this does not earn my respect. I respect Aaron Spelling because for his genre he made good product; he made quality primetime soap operas that never aspired to be anything but; they were silly and vacuous and raunchy but they were better than any other primetime soaps. But Chuck Lorre’s genre has 30 Rock, The Office and Sunny in Philly to compete with in the quality dept… and son, it’s losing something sore.
Hs work is not good and no amount of bucks will ever change that. Period.
I like the show. YMMV
I’m betting Tribune in broadcast and TBS in cable. No way TBS can lose it and Tribune owns the best sitcoms including 2 1/2 Men. I doubt exclusive in cable, would need to be more than 2 million an episode to make that work and if you are cable is it that necessary.
It’s not good. But I’ll take it over Two and a Half Men any day. Can’t argue with those numbers though. Yikes.
All this talk about Chuck Lorre. I hear that the other guy Bill Prady is pretty decent
Did you see last night’s episode? This is a Chuck Lorre sitcom, period.
The show is successful and may make a mil or two because the nerds who run the world like (and watch) the show. Even if dumbass CBS won’t post full episodes online. If you’re a writer or a have the magical greenlight power, pay a-fucking-ttention. We’re not interested in the same trite shit season after season (i.e., legal and medical dramas with different names).
