EXCLUSIVE: Casey Affleck has completed that much-talked about and long-awaited mockumentary he directed about his brother-in-law Joaquin Phoenix’s eccentric metamorphosis from actor to hip-hop musician (or so we’ve been led to believe). I’m told that the film made its debut in a private lunchtime screening at WME headquarters last week for buyers — including Harvey Weinstein – who were sworn to secrecy. WME is selling the film, and it may only take a couple of days to reach a deal. I hear the agency and the distributors intend to keep the mock’s content under wraps for as long as they can for maximum shock value. (So it won’t be part WME Global’s sales push at the Cannes Film Festival.) Presumably, the film answers Hollywood’s bewilderment about whether Joaquin was serious about quitting acting – or whether he was just, well, acting. His long months of bizarre behavior culminated in his semi-mute interview with David Letterman that was as surreal as anything Andy Kaufman ever did. And, his musical debut at the Las Vegas night club LAVO where he claimed to be a homeless rapper, jumped around the stage, and fell off.

Oh, come on. No surprise there. We all knew Joaquin was acting. Can’t wait to see the Moc though.
pretentious much? I guess the joke is on us! silly celebrities!!
And we care about Joachim becauuuuuse?
Welcome back (?) Joachim. While you were away, the entire industry changed for actors demanding ridiculous salaries and dollar one gross. Good time to make a doc.
You’re an idiot. How does one spell someone’s name wrong when it’s in the title of the article and at the top of your window. Your comment was super insightful as well. Good luck with life.
You’re an idiot. How does one surmise a person’s entirety on the basis of one anonymous internet comment? Your comment was super ignorant. Good luck with life.
He can’t. But you can gather a lot from a snide response sniping and dissecting the original response that pointed out a move that was lazy at best and intensely stupid at worst. Good luck with life.
good luck with life you guys!
Duh. This was obvious from day one. I can’t say I’m surprised that certain people in Hollywood were bewildered though, I mean it isn’t exactly the smartest bunch, lol.
Perhaps the first time I’ve ever felt bad for an agent… just the thought of having to sell this…
Please don’t let Harvey buy it. I’d actually like to see this and not have it left to collect dust on his shelf.
I’ve been waiting for this for a very long time.
That makes two of us. Joaquin is one of the best in the industry.
I absolutely love Joaquin and knew there was something up and have been waiting for it to come out! I can’t wait!
Talk about backfiring, who do you know that gives a rat’s ass about this? If it wasn’t for the tabloid media hyperventilating about anything that will keep the 24/7 news cycle going, this would be as invisible as it deserves to be. No one gives a hoot about Joaquin Phoenix, not before, during or after this hype. Sacha Baron Cohen he’s not!
That’s right, he’s not Sacha Baron Cohen. Nothing about this is even close to what Sacha Baron Cohen did or does. Sacha Baron Cohen never plays himself, he plays fake characters. Joaquin is still Joaquin, but in a different wrapper(get the pun?). The fact that you even compared them means that you know nothing about satirical humor.
lol, the key word was Mockumentary which both have in common as they’ve both starred in them. Yikes, do people really have to explain this stuff?
Real or fake? Stupid or calculatedly manipulative? Boring either way. Next.
Yeah if he wants a hint at how the media will take to being deceived he might case study the fall out from The Heavenly Kings / Alive band and movie sham in Hong Kong. The media don’t like being made fools of.
Sorry, but nothing he did during this whole ordeal came anywhere close to the brilliance of Andy Kaufman. Like everything else he does, this whole project was half-assed.
Like Borat, where the character is making fun of the very real clowns that exist in our society, the beauty of the humor here is that you don’t know whether to laugh or be concerned that you are dealing with a real mental illness. Should you laugh at him or help him? I like that kind of tension. It reminds me of the unintended tension and laughter I get from watching reality television, where I imagine many of the participants really do think they are sane.
Finally a relevant observation rather than a rant on unrelated details. Is there nobody out there who watched the Letterman interview who thought just perhaps this really was someone who was dealing with a mental health issue (i.e. schizophrenia)? Do none of u readers work with schizophrenics? The “performance” was dead on, if that’s what it was.
Sasha Baron Cohen must be scared skitless.
nobody outside of the industry wants to see this mockumentary. it’ll have to be beyond brilliant and stand on its own merits, which i doubt it can given that it was directed by casey affleck, because most people have already forgotten who joaquin phoenix is. walk the line was brilliant. but that was over 5 years ago.
first movie in a while i’m actually really excited and intrigued to see
seriously why you hating on this guy?
he’s a great actor and great to watch
The only good to come out of this whole embarrassing episode is the BRILLIANT David Letterman interview. Letterman’s quit wit had me in tears when I first watched that interview, especially when he delivered that line about being sorry that Phoenix couldn’t be there. The ONLY thing I give Phoenix credit for is the ability to not laugh during the Letterman interview. Otherwise, he came across as a mental case in need of treatment.
Ever heard of satire?
The first rule of satire is that you have to have something to satirize.
How about satirizing talentless reality tv stars, the way that genre works (i.e. the “geek” factor or let’s slow down to watch the car accident attitude)… and the fact that more than a few wannabe-stars have gone off the rails during & after the reality tv series itself. Or satire plumbed from folks like Britney Spears ex (Kevin something something?) who catapulated from stage show dancer to white rapper? I, for one, look forward to seeing this documentary. Hopefully it skewers the whole “you don’t have to be talented, you just have to be entertaining as you self-destruct” mentality that is so prevalent these days.
Joaquin = awesome
Casey = lame
ah, the fatal flaw is the latter… Joaq is smarter than this, especially since he is now supposed to be a role model for recovery.
was that the “Pants on the Ground” song?
I have to agree. Where’s the gag? At best it feels like a steal from Gavin Baines’ CALIFORNIA SCHEMIN’, in which he and another Scot posed as California rappers and scored a record deal for an album they had no way to deliver.
Totally agree with Jim, the best thing to come out of this was the Letterman episode, Letterman was in TOP FORM that night and I was also laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes as well. See it on youtube, it’s classic.
So much of this leaked so long ago I can’t imagine there will be much of an audience for whatever they turned it into. I’m hoping there’s a lot of scripted stuff interspersed with the real interviews and appearances. Otherwise, this will be an extremely tough sell.
Sacha and Joaquin have nothing on Glenn Beck – the real modern day Andy Kaufman!
(Mark my words LOL!)
Nobody has a sense of humor anymore! This is funny sh!t! C’mon now.
you sir are correct!
He went all out, and for a long time, too. Or maybe not….he was making a film, of sorts. Well, yea, a film. I think he’s an incredible actor. Just the fact that he could pull this off for so long is insane. I hope he is back in the spotlight again soon.
We missed ya, darlin!
How can JP or Casey move on with thsi hanging over their heads. They have to put this BS behind them. It has to be a big mistake. Casy’s and JP’s reputation and credibility is at stake. They lost so much respect in Hollywood. JP is trying to correct his mistake. I agree with a previous poster…he’s a has been. KJust go away already.
I find it interesting that so many people are angry about this. For the ones saying his career is over, I doubt that. People are making too much money off him, for one, and secondly, he’s a fine actor. Could it be that most dissenters are just pissed that they were duped? Honestly, I don’t understand how. That Letterman interview proved it was an act.
I’m really excited about this; enough to actually PAY to see it.
