EXCLUSIVE: It’s the start of the Cannes Film Festival, when film packages that percolated quietly surface to be shopped for distribution around the world. Here’s the first good one I’ve come across, with a topical premise: Kevin Spacey and Zachary Quinto have committed to star in Margin Call, a corporate thriller that marks the feature directing debut of J.C. Chandor, who wrote the script.
The film tracks eight people at a prominent investment bank in a tumultuous 24-hour period during the early stages of the financial crisis. The characters struggle to position themselves ahead of the coming storm. Myriad Pictures will rep the film at Cannes, while Qunito’s reps at Untitled Entertainment and UTA will broker a domestic deal. The film will shoot in Manhattan this summer.
Quinto and his Before The Door partners Neal Dodson and Corey Moosa are producing with Joe Jenckes. Myriad’s Kirk D’Amico will be executive producer with Laura Rister, Randy Manis and Washington Square Films’ Joshua Blum.
Spacey, who’s six seasons into his term as Artistic Director of The Old Vic Theatre in London, most recently played disgraced former lobbyist Jack Abramoff in Casino Jack and stars in the Chinese production Inseparable. Both films are upcoming and were produced by his Trigger Street banner. CAA and manager Joanne Horowitz made his deal. Quinto, who played Sylar in Heroes and Spock in Star Trek and the sequel that JJ Abrams will get underway after he completes directing Super 8, had also been eyed to play George Gershwin in a DreamWorks biopic that Steven Spielberg was prepping as a potential directing vehicle before he chose The War Horse.

glad 1st time writer/director get a f*cking shot!
good stuff!
This should be amazing! They’re both very talented.
Any more background on J.C. Chandor? Writing and directing so at least deserves a picture. Heard some amazing stories about the meltdown. Great material for a pic.
Other than the fact he’s married to my cousin? So proud of those two right now
Awesome! Zachary Quinto is amazing.
Kevin Spacey — an artist’s artist… lets this project get a chance. Can we ask for more risk takers please.
Kevin Spacey and Zachary Quinto? This should be an incredible film. Both are great actors. And the subject sounds fascinating.
Hope this gets picked, and made!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS GO ZACH GO ZACH IT’S YOUR BIRTHDAY YOUR IN A MOVIE WITH KEVIN FREAKING COSTNER WOOT WOOT WOOT WOOT!
Kevin Costner? I don’t think so!!! hahahahaha
Zachary Quinto and Kevin Spacey sign me up for this.
I read this script last fall for my boss. I loved it, and considering the subject matter (which isn’t exactly my thing) it moved quickly and I actually found it quite moving, sad even. The story is not what you’d think. Glad to see I can remove this from the massive pile of interesting projects that never see the light of day that sits on the shelf in our office. Good Luck.
Good for them for making a movie with a topic so prominent in today’s world. Spacey doesn’t get enough credit for the type of films he chooses to make. Hard to imagine someone wouldn’t green light this!
I loved Margin Cal when I covered it too. Wish we would’ve made it. It’s amazing – way better script than Wall Street 2. I’m not at all surprised that Kevin Spacey signed on with Zack Quinto. Good luck!
This is just fantastic news for Zachary Quinto and his film company. Kevin Spacey is also very good. Corporate stuff is not really my “bag” but I can’t wait to see what they do. Good luck, Zachary Quinto. Go for it. Just don’t forget about that Vulcan Spock – Spock is needed in the Star Trek sequel.
Kevin and Zach together? Good casting. Hope Zach doesn’t quit “Heroes”? It wouldn’t be the same without him. Or the “Star Trek” sequel?
Good luck, and I’m certain this will be a biggie for them.
ViM xoxo
The movie should be called on the DL
Anything starring Quinto = first in line!!!!
I’d go watch that!
After all the boring fare of recent years – it’ll be cool to watch something that requires a braincell or two to watch.
’bout time Rister gets some notice…
Omfg this is so awesome
With Heroes now canceled I really hope to see a lot more of Quinto on the big screen and on stage. The man is amazing.
Putting him in a movie with suits and Spacey..brilliant.
And why oh why would Spielberg choose War Horse over the Gershwin biopic?
The onscreen talent is undeniable. Behind the scenes, the talented and determined Joe Jenckes is one to watch too.
Go Mr. Moose!
So proud of my son Neal, Zach, Corey and Before the Door. Congrats on making it happen!
Oh, Spacey and Quinto. I just came a little. I am so thrilled to see all that power on the screen. I really hope this gets off the ground, relevance aside, it’s good to see independent film makers succeed, and I LOVE Before The Door. Make it happen, guys!
