Fair Game director Doug Liman’s film was well received at Cannes as a political exposé of the Bush administration’s White House press leak regarding CIA operative Valerie Plame, played by Naomi Watts. But Liman told this morning’s press conference that he just wanted to make a movie about people under pressure. “This is not an advocacy film,” Liman said. “Fair Game is just trying to tell a story about something that happened. I didn’t have an agenda apart from just showing what the Wilsons went through.” But Liman also repeated Justice Brandeis’ famous words that sunlight is the best disinfectant. “Even better than punishing some of the players, is to expose them,” he said.
Liman said that Fair Game is the kind of film he’s been trying to make for years — not always with success. He said that his Bourne Identity was mean to be a political parable. And he noted that even when he worked on The OC he tried inserting socially conscious ideas into the TV series – that is, until producer Fox intervened. Even Liman’s lineage is political — his father Arthur served as chief counsel for the U.S. Senate investigation into the Reagan White House’s Iran-Contra scandal. But at least Fair Game producer Jerry Zucker is upfront about what attracted him to the film’s story: that Plame’s husband, Ambassador Joe Wilson, was somebody who always told the truth, and “a democracy can’t survive unless there’s truth.”
Naomi Watts says the film to her is “the story is about an incredible betrayal and how she [Plame] survived against all the odds.” The actress spent two days at the CIA’s Virginia-based agent training facility, known as The Farm, where Plame graduated first in her class. “How many women can say they’ve breastfed while packing a weapon?” Watts noted.

“…a political exposé of the Bush administration’s White House press leak regarding CIA operative Valerie Plame…”
Both Tim Adler and the makers of the movie don’t seem to read the papers much. The “leak” was an inadvertent comment by an official at the State Department, not the White House.
I’m told that the name “Richard Armitage” doesn’t appear anywhere in the movie, even though he (and not any White House official) was Robert Novak’s source. Nor does the fact that we took almost 600 tons of yellowcake out of Iraq.
When you set out to make a blatantly political movie about recent events, just where is the line between “artistic license” and a complete distortion of the facts?
As Fitzgerald, the prosecutor noted, there is a cloud over the vice president.
Look, Scooter fell on his sword for him, but all the grown-ups know it was Cheney behind the scenes. Period.
So. Either you’re here to spin, in which case, you’re wasting your time.
Or… you need to put down your G.I. Joes and grow up.
Unlike Fitzgerald, I’d need to see some evidence. Your feelings are not facts.
But you unwittingly highlight an interesting truth about this film. Those who buy the Plame-Wilson narrative about an evil White House trying to discredit an honest critic will probably love the movie. Those with a deeper knowledge of the case won’t bother.
Altogether too many of the decision-makers in Hollywood fall into the first group. So when this movie does puny business at the box office, they’ll wonder once again what’s wrong with the American public and have no hesitation about greenlighting the next “Stop Loss”. Sooner or later moviegoers will see the light!
All the grownups know that Libby fell on his sword? Sorry, all the grownups know that Richard Armitage was the leak, that he told Bob Novak, and that the White House never spoke of it because they never made statements about ANYTHING, including false charges against them. That policy will be to their everlasting discredit, but that’s another subject.
Besides, Libby was caught in a “perjury trap” – a situation so named to cover for Bill Clinton when he was president – and was charged with saying two different things to the grand jury.
Bush/Cheney Derangement Syndrome is an insidious condition, one that rationalizing liberal “progressives” will surely never overcome.
What does Dick Cheney’s intentional outing of a NOC CIA agent working in non-proliferation have to do with “progressives”? Ralph?? Silence Ralph??? Just calling people names doesn’t prove your point Ralph, it just proves that you are not worth listening to.
Except the film (and book) avoids the truth. Plame was exposed by Colin Powell deputy Richard Armitage, Undersecretary of State. Over pique that Wilson made Powell look bad.
THAT was the entire driving force behind the outing of Plame. Powell was pissed that Wilson made him look bad, and got even.
Meanwhile, actual, real, in the field CIA operatives have been outed by the ACLU and New York Times, with threats against them by Al Qaeda, over GITMO interrogations, and no action or press or anything has been done. I have not heard one peep from Plame on the outing of these men and the threats against them and their families by Al Qaeda.
Not a word.
who’s the black-haired chick in the photo?
Absolutely no one will give two shits about seeing this movie. Think “Green Zone”, or worse, “Greenberg”. It’s Sean Penn as Sean Penn with a deep creases in his forehead. Ain’t nobody cares about soapbox movies and it’s just amazing how reason and smart business by otherwise intelligent movie people get misplaced with their attempts at taking a stand against the “man”. Boring boring boring. Who says “YES” to this crap?
Two facts:
Richard Novak had two sources, and the confirming source was Karl Rove.
The yellow cake removed from Iraq dated back was pre-Gulf War I.
On point:
Valerie Plame is a nice looking woman, but Naomi Watts?
“The yellow cake removed from Iraq dated back was pre-Gulf War I.”
So? Iraq was not supposed to have ANY.
Let the Right Wingers come out in full force trying to rewrite the Bu$h Administrations crimes.
Sad, but expected. Truth needs a protector and thank goodness for someone reasoned like Sean Penn.
Why don’t you Bushies go back to your temple and worship Sarah Palin!
Sean Penn aka Spicoli is reasoned??? wow, you really don’t get out from your parents basement much do you? You probably think Che Guevara was a hero instead of the murderous commie thug that he was.
Now that “liberal” Hollywood is on its knees for Obama, who cares about exposing an event in the Bush administration? If Sean Penn wins an Oscar for this, I swear to God I’ll get so furious, I’ll….
The New York Times and the ACLU also colluded to plan and execute 9/11. And to make the world believe we “landed on the moon”. And to give my white button-downs pit stains after one wearing. Thanks again for your wise, grounded commentary, Whiskey… or should I say Scooter? You clearly have a rewarding life that’s full of happiness.
for god’s sake just give the money to charity, do something with it besides piss it down the drain
no one will see this, it’s all old news and nothing in the story lends itself to cinematic storytelling
this is filmmaking 101 stuff, folks
Why wasn’t Sean Penn mentioned? Somebody trying to help The Cause?
Fun to hear Fitzgerald’s name again. I remember “Fitzmas” was supposed to be on the way, Bush and Cheney “frog-marched” (in Wilson’s sputtering Foghorn J. Leghorn bloviation) off to prison. I guess that “cloud” over Cheney was all he got.
So, Doug Liman made Vince Vaughn a big star.
And Arthur Liman made Oliver North a huge star.
Nice work, Liman family.
wow – did green zone suck.
thank you.
“How many women can say they’ve breastfed while packing a weapon?”
Probably half the women in Texas.
Nice! That was a great and witty comeback.
Love those Hollywood stupids . . . As long as they keep balancing the ball on their nose, I’ll keep throwing them fish.
If you dont believe this is a leftwing hatchet job with a slanted and counterfactual viewpoint, then I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.
This movie is exactly what it appears to be: another pampered hollywood freak acting out his hatred of President Bush.
As some commenters have alrerady point out, the identity of the leaker, State Dept honcho and career Beltway insider Richard Armitage leaked Wilson’s name to Bob Novak.
Apparently, Armitage is not even mentioned in the film.
If its true that a 2-hour movie on this story doesnt even mention the real leaker’s name because to do so would collapse the whole point of the story (which is to tell the world how evil and warmongery the evil jesus cowboy Bush is) what else are fair minded people to conclude?
Also, Sean Penn is like a dog whistle to most Americans these days: if he’s in a movie, chances are better than 99.999% it has a halfwitted radical anti-American slant, hugely popular overseas and on the coasts and campuses of the USA of course but poison everywhere else.
It is not difficult to predict that this movie is going to bomb at the box office and go str8 to DVD, where HuffPosters Kos Kidz and Media Matters mavens can rent it to their hearts desire, proudly satisified that theyre “speaking truth to power.”
As for the rest of the country with a shred of intelligence left, this movie will make Heaven’s Gate look like Titanic.
If “W” bombed how do you think this will do? No body cared about this when Bush was Prez, do you think they care now? Unemplyment is at 10%!
